Galaxy Rangers, complete set DVD.

Two volumes are already out.

Meanwhile, there's a ton of stuff I'd like to see on DVD. A few highlights:

- The documentaries of Kim Longinotto.
- The short films of Bruce Conner. His art gallery has a couple of DVDs (one out of print), but they're not readily available and there is still still no DVD release of A Movie.
- Laurie Anderson's concert film Home of the Brave.
- More of Kiyoshi Kurosawa's films, particularly Pulse.
- The complete, remastered MGM cartoons of Tex Avery.
- All manner of anime, most of it unlikely to have a US DVD release anytime soon, if ever. Say, oh, Flying Ghost Ship, the Ashita no Joe and Ace wo Nerae! movies, and Osamu Tezuka's cartoon shorts.
- More Luis Buñuel from Criterion, particularly The Phantom of Liberty and The Exterminating Angel.
- More Lindsay Anderson, particularly O Lucky Man! and If...

I could go on, but those are my most wanted at the moment.

Dune the extended edition. I caught the extended directors cut of Dune on WGN some years ago. A friend of mine has it in VHS, but I don't understand why it hasn't been released on DVD to this day. Especially after the buzz the Sci-Fi Channel mine-series generated a few years vack. The Dune books by Frank Herbet are my all time favorite sci-fi reads. Even though the movie had it's share of issues in regards to the story, I did like the high production value. Unlike the overall cheap B-movie look of both the Sci-Fi channel mini series. I just would like to watch the extended cut in quality. My one wish for the DVD format. Yet, Ive seen 2 versions of The Thing, Starship Troopers, and 3 versions of Predator plus countless other re-released remasters! I think that a little love could be thrown in the direction of Dune.

There's a PAL DVD release with 35 minutes of extra material. It's pan&scan, mono and the added material doesn't have all the effects done (for example Freemen don't have blue eyes), but it's still better than the theatrical version.

thanks for the heads up. Not the one I would like, but it'll have to do. Now to secure a copy....

Is the extended edition of Dune the one that has the long voiceover at the beginning ugh IIRC the Director HATES that version... and I do too... blegh.

I enjoyed David Lynch's Dune vision... and surprisingly I enjoyed the sci fi series... but Children of Dune needs a special edition...IIRC that release is barebones.

As for the different versions of dune:

EDIT: Spoony yeah, yeah you're right some of the addition stuff was nice... I'll take it without the shitty voiceover intro.

The voiceover was pretty crappy, but I actually liked many of the other extra scenes.

Sandra Bernhard's Without You I'm Nothing
Valley of the Dolls
Beyond the Valley of the Dolls

Beyond has been in line for a Criterion treatment for what seems like forever at this point. Apparently Fox may have changed its mind about letting Criterion put it out. Grrrrrr.

Pulse/Kairo has a pretty good, albeit featureless, region-free DVD out; additionally, Tartan Video recently expanded their US branch and has a load of Asian films on tap for this coming year. They mentioned in a Fangoria interview that they're trying to secure several of Kurosawa's movies for US distribution. I'd particularly like to Charisma come out here, since the only version available anywhere right now is a fairly subpar Japanese disc without subtitles.

In regards to some other stuff mentioned in the thread...

Battle Royale R1

Tartan has a region-free NTSC version of Battle Royale

I would get all of those, plus Gargoyles.

Gargoyles: Complete First Season comes out this Tuesday

MacGyver: First Season - January 25th, '05

Samurai Fiction. Yeah, the Japanese DVD has English subtitles, but it's expensive.

Media Blasters put out a R1 copy last year (?) with subs. Deep Discount has it for about $17.

Now this is one I'd love to see! There's a Spanish DVD, but I'm pretty sure it's missing English subtitles.

This isn't a movie, but I'd possibly like to have it more than any movie that comes to mind... and if I've been ignorant of its release or planned release then you have a chance to make me a happy man:

Almost Live!

Sorry to bump an older thread, but I like keeping up with stuff like this. :) Anyway, There are two more of Kurosawa's movies on the way from HVE on May 17th: Charisma and Séance. I'm really psyched for Charisma, since it's the one I haven't seen before. Séance is well worth buying; I like it better than the version (Séance On a Wet Afternoon) from the '60s. Too bad that Pulse is still the only one of his major films waiting for a R1 release...

Criterion's also got Buñuel's Phantom of Liberty coming the week after the Kurosawa DVDs.

When I was on HVE's site, I thought for a minute that you were going to have a triple-play of most wanted releases, but it turns out that the Home of the Brave they're releasing isn't the concert you're waiting on.

Some updates/additions to previously mentioned titles:

- Class of 1984 is on the way to R1 from Anchor Bay on August 23rd.

- Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair is in the works, mid- to late August release is likely.

- I thought it was fairly well-known already, but The Life Aquatic is out on May 10th from Criterion. 1- and 2-disc versions available.

- Scrubs: Season 1 comes on May 17th (the same day as the 4th season of Seinfeld, for what that's worth).

- More Samurai Jack also coming: Season 2 on May 24th.

- High Anxiety is supposedly in the works; no release date. A two-disc Spaceballs: SE is out May 3rd.

- Two more volumes of Galaxy Rangers are out on April 12th.

Its a freaking scandal that these two classics are not out on DVD yet.

Scarecrow (with Al Pacino and Gene Hackman)

Prince of the City (with Mr. Substitute himself, Treat Williams)

More Ingmar Bergman films by Criterion (e.g. The Virgin Spring, From the Lives of Marionnettes, Face to Face, The Devil's Eye)

Beefed up DVD versions of 2001, A Clockwork Orange and Eyes Wide Shut

A non-criterion release of movies like Seven Samurai.

60 bucks for a DVD? No thanks!

Out in the UK if you can play PAL discs. About $30 due to the exchange rate, but thats still half price.

Freakin' awesome! I also need to pick up Doppelganger and Bright Future.

God, I love that movie. I've got a decent bootleg DVD of it, but I'd like to pay cash money for an original. You'd figure this would be an obvious release for HVE.

Criterion's also got Buñuel's Phantom of Liberty coming the week after the Kurosawa DVDs.

Yep, I saw that a few days ago, then proceeded to freak out and party. I'm also pleased to see L'Âge D'or and Un Chien Andalou are available, though the former is apparently not a particularly good DVD and the later is more than a bit pricey. Still, hey, sign me up for more Buñuel. Now, if only Criterion would release El Ángel Exterminador (The Exterminating Angel)

When I was on HVE's site, I thought for a minute that you were going to have a triple-play of most wanted releases, but it turns out that the Home of the Brave they're releasing isn't the concert you're waiting on.

That would have been completely awesome, but I figure I don't want to push my most-wanted luck too far. Besides, I have the laserdisc to tide me over.

Meanwhile, having recently seen a film print, I'm now positively jonsing for Jacques Tati's Play Time to come back into print. Criterion regained the rights to his flicks a while ago and re-issued M. Hulot's Holiday and Mon Oncle (both of which are on my to-buy list) a while back, but with the recent restored 70mm remaster of Play Time, they're busy authoring a new disc before putting back into print. It'll be worth the wait, but I still want a copy in my hands posthaste.

By the way, all manner of Criterion news, discussion, and gossip await the discerning film buff (or, alternately, the free-spending film snob) at The Criterion Forum.
