Moving to...HOUSTON!

yes, yes...try to keep the hate in this thread to a minimum, but i'm moving to houston relatively soon. i need some pointers as far where i can find some good apartments, price ranges, etc. i will be working off stella link.

HOUSTON RESIDENTS - don't let me down. and i might just get to meet olimario. *eek*
 
If you make any sort of decent salary and/or have some money saved up, screw apartments. Just get a house. It's cheap.
 
It depends on what you need to be close to.
If it doesn't matter, I say The Woodlands and Clear Lake/Friendswood are the best suburbs.
If you want something in the city, try Montrose or around the Galleria. My friend David has a nice studio apartment near there.

Where are you moving from?
 
i'm moving from dallas.

like i said, i'll be working off stella link which i think is off 610 (within the inner loop?) i would like to live close to where i work to cut down on gas expenses, so i will definitely look into the regions you all have said!

humble looks promising in words, i hope it's near where i work...i love nature.

Depends, how old are you, what do you like to do, what kind of setting, but MOST IMPORTANTLY, where will you work?
 
Near and around the Galleria's pretty good. You can get a lot for cheap (although I dunno how different it is from Dallas). I've met some people who live near Montrose and that's a fairly nice area too. Also, Rice Village -- lots of students there and there's a good selection of drinking establishments 'round that part if that's what you're into. I b'lieve that should be near around where you're working.
 
what are your price ranges?? Stella Link is a fairly bad area, my wife used to live there. It has lots of upscale businesses, but crime is pretty rampant. The closest apartments that I can think of in that area that are good are on El Mundo street right off of Holly Hall. It's basically on the corner for 610 and 288. And really effin close to Stella Link but a good neighborhood, crime is a minimum. I used to live there and apartments are hella nice too. San Marin are really nice, about 800 to 1500 dollar apartments. Parque Del Oro is made for college students at the Medical Center and it ranges from 600-1200. San Melia is a little more expensive, but it's one of the nicest complexes in Houston. It's about 1000-1800 a month and it's beautiful. The gym's equipment even has little lcd tv's on them so you can watch seinfeld while jogging. El Mundo is by far the cheapest, if you catch them on a sale, you can get a $550 apartment, very nice BTW. And they go up to about 1000. I'm suggesting these because I've lived in all of these complexes and I know the service and everything is outstanding, seriously. Best experiences I've ever had in apartments. Check that area out first if you're not going to be scraping for money. You also have a ton of great restaurants in that area and you're minutes away from downtown and all the goodness. PM me if you want more info. BTW, right down the street is one of the last really good A&W burger places... my god it's delicious.

Edit: 500-600 is a little low if you want to live on that side of town in a decent area (i.e. you won't get robbed.) Try the Alief area, specifically the Westchase District by China Town. Great hispanic and oriental food, apartment prices are between 400-600. And it's not as far as Humble and the Woodlands to get to your job. Sheesh, taking 45=the biggest shittiest headache in your life.
 
superpac and mupepe have got it right, the galleria/rice village areas are WAY closer than woodlands or anything else. and woodlands...well it's nice but it's not really houston, see, it's not as cultured...but yea.

I personally live in the alief area, as mupepe mentioned and it's got it's good and bad areas, I suggest living off of westheimer, great access to all kinds of shops and entertainment and connects to 610. closer you get to downtown though, the more expensive the nice apartments get. So it comes down to rent vs gas

You rule, hehe, I live in the same are off of Richmond! So many shops and so much variety. It's not that hard to spot the bad areas either haha

I know alot of people here don't like the guy, but wishing death on him is a tad extreme - don't you think? That's not only a statement that can get you in trouble leagally (if anyone took it seriously - and there are those who would), but probably a TOS violation as well.

Anyway... If you pick Humble, be aware that your commute will be from an area north of town, through a congested downtown, then to the south side of 610: http://maps.google.com/maps?spn=0.5...&daddr=stella+link+and+610,+houston,+tx&hl=en

Your best bets for within the loop (610) would be to live in the Galleria/Uptown area (I-59 SW @ 610), some parts of Downtown, Midtown, Rice U/Village, West U, Medical Center, or Heights (E I-10, between Downtown and 610/Galleria). The most convenient would be Uptown, Rice, or West U. The least expensive would be Heights, followed by Uptown. The most congested would probably be Downtown, Midtown, and the Medical Center.

Might I suggest Sugar Land or Missouri City? They're SW of Houston, near and/or outside Beltway 8/Sam Houston Tollway. They're not that far out from town, and Sugar Land benefits from First Colony, one of those masterplanned things. I do believe the rent is cheaper there, even if the people are a little weird.

Yes, we need a Houston GA meeting!!! Someone here with a good job needs to pick up the tab at Katz's or Romano's Macaroni Grill though. Oh man, and since I have all you people here that can go to this restaurant, I'm going to whore it out.

Casa Del Pueblo on Main Street in Humble. The best fucking tacos in the world, and the best burritos. THE BEST FUCKING MEXICAN FOOD! This place is unbelievably good, it's the only restaurant that I would drive 35 miles for weekly... which I do. Do yourself a favor and go.

If we have a GAF Gathering, it ought to be in some place cool and not too expensive, like Frank's Pizza in Downtown, Star Pizza off 59 @ Shepherd (and Amy's Ice Cream after the pizza!), Bibas One's-A-Meal on Grey in Montrose, one of the good Vietnamese places downtown (preferably The Other Place Near Mai's, forgot what it's called. I understand Mai's gets crowded quite a bit), etc. There are many, many, MANY unique and reasonably priced places to catch a meal in town, we don't have to stick to the chains, crap NY deli knockoffs, or out-of-the-way suburban places.
 
Motherfuckers. I've tried TWO TIMES to do a gaf meetup (heading out to an Astros game in a big GAF group)

Both times everyone kept flaming out and I just gave up on the idea.

(we'd have to purchase tickets within the next few weeks because all the bandwagoner will start snatching up tickets like mad.

We could get tickets for 5-15 bucks each, and parking for Astros games doesn't cost an arm and a leg if you're willing to walk about 10-12 blocks. 5 bucks for walking for 5-10 minutes >>>>> 20 bucks and you still walk for a few blocks.
