MS 360 conference E3 (streaming link inside)

At its pre-E3 new conference, Microsoft confirmed three major milestones: Japanese RPG giant Square Enix will create role-playing games for Xbox 360, starting with Final Fantasy XI with full Xbox Live compatibility. The game's content will remain the same, but obviously the graphics will see immense changes and improvements. Additional Square Enix games will follow.

IGN

So there it is, its not FF11 only. Good to hear

Yep, as many of us predicted, there's no way PD0 will make launch. Which makes me sad.

I'll probably buy a 360 for Madden, maybe PGR, maybe Kameo, maybe Gears of War, maybe Oblivion.

That's a lot of maybes, which in and of itself, is pretty disappointing.

Wow, what a complete disaster for MS. How the fuck could they plan Xbox 2 for so long and still be so unprepared? The launch lineup (outside of sports games) isn't looking too hot, and going off the demo vids PS3 already has a clear tech advantage only a week after X360. Total domination by Sony today.

hey did M$ even aanounce a launch date? if they didnt i think its getting delayed.

the ea guy said christmas. allard mentioned that next gen was starting this year several times. no concrete date or anything though

MS is making good decisions so far and the games have me pumped...but, in terms of hype, they're getting their asses handed to them by Sony. Sony has just turned it up a notch, with bigger theoretical numbers, nicer presentation of the games themselves, and a better webcast of their conference.

Man, this is gonna be a fierce war. I love it!

FFXI is the #2 MMO still, ahead of EQ 1 & 2 but has obviously had it's growth locked down, thus the port to 360. A lot of people still play it.

Right now it looks pretty identical. But if they tweak it up some, add voice chat and it triggers another community restart, it'll be a big part of 360 for me. PDO, FFXI 360 and Oblivion would do it for me.

I'd really like to avoid buying three darn consoles again though, so it's hard to decide...

to be fair, microsoft showed mostly in game videos which is something sony did not, they showed pre renderd or cg stuff, also x360 had alot of (too much) EA stuff which i doubt uses the harware to the max.

Its a close call, but if p23 can do what those videos showed, then that is that.

:lol

According to multiple sources, ALL of the PS3 stuff was in-game. Sorry to burst your bubble there. And it's obvious.

Secondly, aren't Morrowind and Ghost Recon going to be multiplatform titles? I know they're announced as such. I'm pretty sure GOW will be Xbox exclusive whereas PS3 will get UT2007. But, I wouldn't be surprised at either being multiplatform.

This is such a one sided set of conferences, IMO with Sony just demolishing the 360. Now, certainly the 360 will be available this year and it will be tough to resist the temptation, but given the the PS3 will be out in the spring, it gets just a bit more bearable.

It seems like Microsoft has been caught completely flat-footed. Clearly, they're significanlty outclassed technically and with Gates' Halo vs PS3 launch comments, it seems clear they were expecting the PS3 to launch next holiday season.

Whoops.

To answer a few questions:

- They said during the presentation that GoW was exclusive.
- They said 360 would be backwards compatible with the top-selling Xbox games.

This could mean it is compatible with 98% of games but there are a few that don't work, or it could mean they have a Bleem! type system where they cater for specific games. They didn't say.

I'm not partial in the least (I don't even own any present-gen systems), but I find it amusing that people are quick to dismiss any good looking 360 game as "rendered" yet are eager to accept all PS3 footage as real time. Why is that? Seems people never learn from Sony's past... :D

PS3 footage was awesome, but honestly, some of the 360 titles are ace too. PGR3, for example (from the pics and video a couple of days ago), looked quite a ways better than the PS3 GT5 clip.

All I can think about right now is PS3.

In many ways I see myself even buying a Revolution over the 360, at least I would -hope- to get a pretty rocking Mario/Zelda game out of it. Don't really see much here that PS3 won't also deliver.

Though with my Xbox on its last legs, and backwards compatability confirmed, it may not take much convincing this November.

...Uh, never mind. Seriously though, I wouldn't worry about the conference showing. MS has proven that they simply suck at it compared to Sony. I'll be very interested to see the vids and read the backstage impressions before I cry into my beer. Its a damn good thing I'll be picking up a Sony console this time...hopefully I'll be able to enjoy the best of both worlds.

PS There is no clear tech advantage.

i made a thread about this already, but are you sure the PS3 is hitting North America in the spring? If so, MS is in trouble. It'll be PS2/Dreamcast all over again.

I am perplexed by the reactions of some.

A console with a launch window that includes almost all major sports including a version of Madden not found anywhere else, a gorgeous and popular RPG (Oblivion), and NFS which looks very fun. Plus Kameo is looking very good, Odyssey looks incredible, a free Live package, PGR3, GoW, an absurdly good looking basketball game, and Ghost Recon are all coming out in the foreseeable future. I don't know how that is not considered to be impressive.

Let's frame this post!!

Sony will end only because they printed some better numbers on a sheet, the games were "presented" better, and their webcast didn't suck. Those damn stuttering frames were a direct result of the webcast!

OMG.

The absence of launch game Perfect Dark Zero (the Halo replacement) means it's indeed in an embarrasing state. Even Kameo got its own segment at the show.

Dude, just don't. As painful as it is to state, Xbox 360 just got demolished today.

After both these conferences today are we sure Sony isn't launching Fall 2005 and MS needs an extra year to get their shit together?

Killzone and Motor Storm absolutely slaughter both of those games if these videos are realtime:

Watch demos 1 & 2.
Killzones in the middle of demo 1 and Motor Storm is at the end of demo 2.
wtf... i watched the Killzone video and all it was was a CG Cutscene. Even at that, the lighting in the GOW gameplay killed it.

Also, Killzone is such a Halo copycat, they should be embarrased.

am i looking at the right Killzone video? the one on gamespot that says killzone?

Only on GAF can that conference be viewed as a disaster. One person even said that PS3's conference offered more "substance" compared to 360's "fluff". As if showing actual games we'll be playing in a few months time as opposed to a few renders and demos of things we have no solid info on is of more substance.

As if skipping the snoozefest powerpoint presentations and instead breaking down features about XboxLive/Media Center and actually explaining how things are going to work. They're doing everything right this time. Well, except for Rare. :P

But GAF's vision is but a small piece of the puzzle. Sony are worried about MS, you can tell just by the bumping up of the launch window. Big move by MS in securing Squenix support. Laugh at FFXI, but later on down the line expect some big titles from them.

FFXI is still doing pretty damn well, and although a lot of people are dismissing the 360 version, FFXI with better graphics along with an already existing online service is going to attract more people than you might think. Several of my friends and I never got around to the US version because we our computers couldn't run it (or don't like PC gaming), and didn't want to drop a hundred on the PS2 version. But we'd all planned on getting a 360 at some point, and Live is a given, so all of a sudden FFXI is appealing, and we'll probably all wind up getting it. Obviously that's not going to be the situation for everyone, but this is not as stupid as a move as most people are making it out to be. Although I agree a large majority of the rest of the conference was pretty crappy.

What would have been a cool S-E game that would have been a 360 shocker? World of Mana. THAT would have been a suprise.

MASSIVE NO-SHOWS:

- Perfect Dark Zero ( :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol )

- Halo 3

- A RELEASE DATE FOR A CONSOLE LAUNCHING THIS YEAR

Uh-oh....

GT5 looked like GT4 with about 5x the amount of cars. I know Sony will do more to improve the game before it ultimately comes out, but I agree, as of right now, PGR3 is looking better.

MS sucks because they don't know how to put together a decent presentation, and Sony does.

For instance, why are we not inundated with new media and video right now for PGR3, GOW, Kameo etc. from the press conference, the way we were with PS3 stuff? Is it still too early, or did MS show the same exact PGR3/GOW sequences already seen in videos a couple of days ago?

They're dropping the ball in terms of generating buzz imo.

Not when they say it costs 15 bucks a month to play. It won't be a huge system seller. Maybe sell around 200K tops.

I agree that the 360's PC was not "fluff", but there were plenty of "actual games" at the PS3 conference, too. You don't think we'll eventually be playing DMC4, Killzone, etc.? Plus, it would make sense that the PS3 titles wouldn't be as far in development -- it's launching several months later than the 360, after all.

Halo 3 isn't a no show. they never planned on showing it. whoever made you think it would be shown is fucking stupid. they are still riding the high of Halo 2 and showing 3 now would be retarded. it would seem as ifthey were forcing it out early.

Halo 3 will be shown next e3, which in itself will still be a nearly a year before it comes out (Holiday 06).

-Madden's also coming out for the other consoles, and supposedly with a few more gameplay tweaks than the 360 version.
-Most hardcore Elder Scrolls players play on the PC, and many who started with Morrowind on Xbox got pissed off by the lack of modability and expansions the PC offered. They'll play on PC next time.
-GoW isn't going to make launch, and looks like the type that'll keep getting delayed because it isn't fun (ala Brute Force).
-Ghost Recon isn't a very strong-selling franchise.
-All of the other games are either sequels to second-tier games available on Xbox that would have never pushed consoles then and won't know. Other than Kameo, but... c'mon.

The reason it's not impressive is that there isn't a killer app in any mainstream-friendly genre potentially available within a few months of launch.

Oh yeah, and the PS3 stuff looks far superior; gamers will be convinced that by the time anything must-own is out on Xbox, PS3 will be out.

Dreamcast 2 Get!

Sony knows how to present and market better than MS ever could, it seems. We'll see what happens. :lol I have to say, though...I am mightily impressed with Sony...but that doesn't mean I think MS just got kicked into the city limts of Loserville. Still such a long way to go, man. Sony has definitely whooped MS today, though.

what he was saying is, none of those were actually shown (other than GT5, which got owned by PGR3). everything shown for PS3 was almost 100% CG cutscenes.

Unfortunately, all of those games (with the notable exception of Gears of War and possibly Oblivion) looked like Xbox + games. So yes, while it was great to see games, there was A) not a damn thing new about any of it and B) little that actually demonstrated a full generation gap.

The ONLY news of REAL import from the conference was Square-Enix on board for the 360, and even that slipped out before the show started.

The PS3 had little in the way of games to offer, but they're also not planning on launching IN SIX MONTHS. Remember how Microsoft used the show to energize the fanbase and actually answer real questions (like "when is Halo 2 coming out?")? They didn't do that at all this year. They presented some novel technology (WITHOUT A RELEASE DATE) which is little more than "Xbox with more bells and whistles" and showed off a bunch of standby basic line-up titles that we all knew about. Sony at least presented stuff that looked like a NEW generation and not simply an advancement or tweaking of the current one.

Really? The 360 is on the cover of Time magazine... it had its own prime time MTV show and it's been all over news sites.

I meant with the hardcore gamer contingent. :) The disparity between the reactions to the MS and Sony press conferences on this very forum should be enough evidence of that for you. ;) :P

People seem to be throwing a lot of weight behind, "Look, they have Square!"

But besides the tech demo, the thing they showed was a port of FFXI.

I don't know, it kind of seems to me that either Square had decided to go really multiplatform this time, meaning we might see their smiling face at Nintendo's conference too... or MS paid a lot of money for their support, and we know how that turned out last time (FF:CC is an excellent game... it's also the only GCN game I know of Square developing)... This wouldn't be it, I'm sure there'd be one or two other dev efforts at least... I'm just wary of any sort of major support when they just pledged it earlier in the day to Sony, unless they're planning to do so for all Next Gen consoles.

I would add Project Gotham Racing 3 and Ghost Recon 3 and Kameo to that. And if you considered the scope and scale, Call of Duty 2 (due to the large scale war going on). Not that CoD2 looked very good, but for the amount of shit they had going on, it was definately a big step over Xbox 1.
