MS Japan: "We will beat Sony (PS3)"

Borys said:
Hmm, I get it but going from "We expect to win", through "We expect to be #1" to "We expect to beat Sony [to be #1]" isn't a big stretch. That's pretty logical
You DON'T get it. It is a big stretch. What is logical is to QUOTE properly, instead of misquoting.

Regardless of the fact that we all expect PS3 to outsell 360 in JPN.

Exactly. It would be like me saying:

Borys: "I like to make trolling subject lines."

Eventhough you never said it, I just logically assumed it by your first post.

But then again, maybe he knows something we don't. MS is yet to announce more support from japanese 3rd parties i.e. Konami, Sega Japan, Koei, Bandai...

Aww... come on, everybody likes attention grabbing titles.
Don't hate me, next time I'll quote it the boring, I mean - proper way.

MS should try to beat Sony on their own home turf before they talk about beating Sony in Japan.
What makes you say they won't "try to beat Sony on their own home turf" also? :D

Good luck to MS Japan - can't fault them simply for setting lofty goals. Just hope the plan for execution is less pie-in-the-sky than the goals themselves are.

Rhindle said:
I think selling more than a million units would be considered a "win" for MS Japan. I seriously doubt he meant "we're going to outsell PS3 in Japan."
If by "win" you mean ignore that they're competing with anyone but themselves, then yeah, sure, that works ;)

And :lol @ chinch for his hardline devotion to an exact representation of this comment when he's never been so concerned about such accurate representation when it comes to comments about Sony. Good Stuff.

i don't own an xbox.

sorry for making obvious corrections which certain zealots seem to revel in.

While I can't say that I think this is going to happen, stranger things have happened and I am going to laugh my ass off if it comes to fruition (especially at the haters)

What makes you guys think that Sony is always going to be top dog?

Hell, from everything I have ever seen, usually the top guy gets lax, slips up because they think they can do no wrong, and then wammo, the competition hits them between the eyes. Make no mistake MS is in this in the long haul and I would say MS is far more savvy than Sony could ever dream of being business wise.

Just look at how 3Dfx thought they could do no wrong, and Nvidia stepped up to the plate and slapped them upside their head. Nvidia now owns all of 3Dfx's IP.

Now, will it happen? Maybe, maybe not. MS isn't stupid. They are very competitive and not a force to be easily dismissed.

Remember before the PS? Everyone thought Nintendo would always be the top dog. Things change. MS is hungry. Let's wait and see.

No need to apologize! It's just a shame you can't apply such powers for accurate representation more consistently ;)

One of the reasons is because Sony seems to understand what it takes to keep that top dog status. They seem to continue to snap up and hold on to important exclusives. Not that this alone is a recipe for success but it does wonders for keeping the existing fanbase from jumping over to the new guy when they dont have these same games.

That said, what's an improtant exclusive today may not be next gen.

Who said that? People are just laughing at the idea of it being MS that'd beat Sony in Japan next gen. If anyone is going to beat them there next gen it'll be Nintendo. MS's sales there for this gen are absolutely terrible. Since the Xbox debuted in Japan in 2002 its sold around 500k units.

After what they did at E3, you really think Sony isn't taking this seriously?

Not even Dopeyfish is stupid enough to think the xbox has a chance in Japan...

Wait, I take that back.

What does this generation have anything to do with this next one coming up?

Like I said, stranger things have happened. What has happened in the past does not dictate the future.

I am not claiming to even think that MS is going to beat them, but only time will tell. MS is a force to be reckoned with in general.

Dr_Cogent said:

The point was that the Xbox's image in Japan is terrible. And the idea of fixing that in just 1 generation to top Sony who's image is pretty damn clean doesn't seem very likely. I really don't think they'll top Nintendo next gen there.

Well, hey. I believe they'll do a bit better. I don't think it's a stretch to say it's pretty much close to impossible for them to actually topple Sony in Japan (especially since Sony seems to be maintaining the big franchises that make them so popular in Japan, from what we can see), but they'll do perhaps significantly better than Xbox. The reasonable goal would be maybe 1 million, maybe 1.5 million by the end in best case scenario. Blue Dragon should be appealing, I think. That should be a nice game for them.

All it would really take is for the Xbox 360 to have at least one or two killer apps that the Japanese are dying for and things could rapidly change IMO.

Err.. I can't think of anything stranger that has happened.. care to enlighten us?

- Sega's collapse despite still being good -> nope, not as big
- Nintendo dropping the ball on storage medium and losing -> nah

Sony's new system doesn't appear to having any glaring flaws, so what's the worst that could happen? I suppose Cell might be near impossible to fab in quantity (causing an outright failure and drop out), but that's about it. Sony isn't going to fail if they make the hardware they showcased at E3 and get it out on time to the masses.

It needs a new and exclusive Final Fantasy and/or Dragon Quest.

And even then, the new and exclusive Final Fantasy would have to be Final Fantasy XIII or Final Fantasy XIV as opposed to a Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles type situation, and it'd have to be a Dragon Quest IX or X instead of like a Slime Mori Mori Super Puzzle Quest.

I'm not talking about the VG industry alone. I'm talking about business in general. Stranger things have happened.

And I disagree. If the PS3 is released without a HD, that to me is a glaring flaw IMO.

Sure. Houses have been haunted. 300 spartans stood against 250,000 Persians and held them off long enough to win. Michael Jackson was aquitted on all charges.

But, we're talking about a situation which would literally require a complete ideological shift on the part of an entire fuckin' nation. This sort of thing would only happen with the franchises they cannot live without, which have been proven to be things like Pokemon and Dragon Quest VIII.

How can that clause be "unconstitional"?! Its written in the actual constitution.

:lol How are those business related? No matter. Like I said, I am not saying I think it's going to happen personally. It is indeed unlikely for the most part.

I think MS is going to surprise people though no matter what happens.

And seriously, what do you guys expect? For him to say that he thinks they are going to lose or come in second? Positive attitudes are where you start at. If you go in telling yourself you are going to lose, you will.

A "numbered one" to boot, at least judging by the GC experience.

Yep and that's not likely to happen. Kitase seemed to indicate that he's working on the PS3 FF, and he's only been involved in the numbered games in the series so far. So it seems like that's going to be FF13. As for DQ, Horii has made it clear that the system that has the biggest fanbase will get DQ. That seems like it'll be the PS3, especially if its going to be getting the numbered FF's.

They're not business related, I was just expanding the criteria to include other unlikely and surprising scenarions. ;)

I think MS will surprise people, sure. I just think there's no chance for it to happen here with Xbox360 (in terms of beating PS3), unless they're going to stun the Japanese world with announcements of key franchises being exclusive.

Yeah they have surprised us enough with mediocre first showing and the alpha kit damage control. LetÂ’s see what they have in store for TGS (should be awesome).

Well, everything I have been reading lately has been rumors (and I realize that all they are are rumors) is that MS has a few more things up it's sleeves that it hasn't revealed. You never know :)

They are alpha kits, what did you expect from alpha kits?

What did Sony show instead? Not much of anything IMO. I didn't expect them to show much though, since they are not launching this year. I am looking forward to next years E3.

It's a given that they have surprises left. X05 should be very enlightening, to say the least. As should TGS, actually. I just don't think it's at the magnitude they require. (Short of buying those franchises exclusive for ONE BILLION DOLLARS, or Akira Toriyama only being allowed to provide his shitty art for XBX360 games - one of them being DQ, or like... I don't know... a Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest crossover game...)

Dr_Cogent said:

What Sony showed, very effectively actually, was that it still has secured a shit ton of its popular franchises going into next-gen, from Final Fantasy to Metal Gear Solid, to Devil May Cry to Tekken, to Gran Turismo (duh). These are the types of things that are guaranteed to push the userbase forward, and despite what was prerendered or not it worked in getting people excited I feel.

I expected some kick ass graphics and smooth frame rates. I know for sure that the final hardware will be much better but still the entire Xbox 360 @ E3 sucked.

Sony stuff was a cocktease. I won't get hyped about those games untill I hear some gameplay impressions.

You can't expect kick ass graphics and smooth framerates on alpha hardware. That's why it's called alpha hardware :lol

What I meant was the E3 Xbox 360 showing. I mean when you are launching/revealing the hardware you don't want your games to run at 15 frames per second and look a little bit better than the latest Xbox stuff.

Now I know that most of those games were running on 2 Core CPU with a X800 workstation card but still. MS should have done what they did at the Jpn 360 revealing.

- 80 000 users
- double backward compatibility
- shit load of support

This plus:

- Suposedly the best hardware
- Free online gaming
- Media box approach (just like MS)
- 299$ still is the target for launch (though unconfirmed yet)

There simply isn't any common way to reverse this mammoth right now. Sony would need to pair up double the amount of bad moves and mistake Nintendo did with 64 to loose this lead really. Microsoft have to play their card perfectly and Sony needs to mess up big time if you want a change of lead in this industry next-gen.

Thing is that the first games will be develloped on those. Those games won't get their graphic redone at the last minute when we'll receive the official kits later that's for sure.
What does that mean? --- most first 360 games won't look all that hot and/or are going to be "present gen upgraded games".

What else is new? Remember the PS2 launch? It was crap. Everyone said the DC looked better and they were right for the most part.

And I really can't agree. PGR3 looks awesome and isn't that a launch title?
