MS overtake Sony as No. 1 in Brand Perception

yes... in Japan.

Find it quite difficult to believe, but this is a Nikkei Research survey (the one which Sony have topped for the last 2 years - since the survey began effectively)

Clarification :
Sony are now at 4th for business and 4th for consumers
MS are 1st for business and 3rd for consumers

IN JAPAN

must be all those train ads.

they are running crazy Win XP ads on the trains. they are pushing a 5 year old product like it launched last week!

Japan. The, uh, that country. That, uh, hates Microsoft consoles? By only buying five consoles total.

Nah it's all the OS-Tan hentai, or whatever the hell it's called. I call it perfectly good hentai art ruined by a Windows taint.

Am I gonna have to set Japan up the bomb again?!

Anyhow - call me when this starts to reflect in actual sales. :D

yeah but this is Microsoft as a brand vs Sony as a brand, not Xbox vs Playstation, where Playstation reigns supreme by a massive margin.

Right right. This is what I'm trying to get at. How does this "brand recognition" effect the console-side market? It appears that it operates on significantly different criteria, because it certainly isn't videogames that contributed to this "perception." And it's not like Microsoft went from No. 50 in Brand Perception to No. 1, so...

if this true , there is no problem at all, Sony could easily retrieving its position, great new MP3 Players, the brandnew VAIO notebook is really impressive, grand Wega TV make me crying every time I see it and also the strongest weapon.. PSP :)

I find the notion of MS having a brand perception with consumers absolutely terrifying.
Well unless we're talking the perception of illegally selling beta software to people for the last 10 years, in which case they are the clear no.1 (with Oracle trailing narrowly in 2nd).

Wait...I thought Windows Update was actually a revolutionary idea. :lol ;) Yeah, permanently beta-testing an OS has been great fun. PEACE.

"It already is being reflected in sales...of Windows and Sony's electronic division products."

:lol nope, I've been sipping martinis and soju until 3am last night so I can't even look at alcohol today without getting all green faced.

Oh I never said Sony isn't on that list - they just aren't anywhere near top 3 - yet. ;)

5Milion$ lost on ~4milion shipped.
Computes.

Responses:
Levelheaded Sony fanboy (not unlike myself):
"1.25$ lost per unit, looks like PSP doesn't cost more then 205$ to manufacture"

Levelheaded Microsoft fanboy (not unlike DC):
"Gah, Sony is lying with numbers again. We know they loose 300$ per PSP, which means they are hidding 1.2Bilion$ in losses spreading it around other divisions."

:D

oooo - you bitch! :)

They would be hiding the costs in T60 and in Electronics by the way. ;)

And possibly under some pillows and cushions at the back of one of their offices. ;)

Regardless, if you don't think every company does some trickery with numbers then you need more than Martinis (especially one that has just been done for cooking the Tax books!) ! ;)

"Right, so, like the man said... what exactly do they sell in Japan?"

well, as the focus is split vs. Consumers and business then i'd expect that the business part comes from their business support / Japanese OS etc (given this is MS JAPAN rather than MS as a whole)

As fro consumers? i assume it comes from mostly favourable experiences with the software they provide.

Don't go there. People might think you are...let me locate the right term for it...oh, yes, "defend[ing] a companies financial performance because they happen to produce a kick ass games system"

From there it's a slippery slope to being called a "fucker" or a "wanker". I see you're already halfway down the slope at "bitch" so it may be too late. Sorry I couldn't be here sooner :(

On topic, what was MS's previous position on the list? Assuming it wasn't drastically lower the last time they measured it, what's the speculation as to why this doesn't have a more positive effect on their Xbox business?

for a start, how dare you class Faf into that group. that's an exclusive club for a select few and you have no control over that membership. You have to work hard to get in.

You know me and Faf actually know each other right? We call each other much worse usually....

9th on the business list - doesn't mention the consumer list position.

translation of the PSP announcement FAF :

"PSP treading water
The game business appears burdened by sluggish sales of Sony's first portable game device, the PSP, which went on sale in Dec. 2004. A number of industry analysts project operating losses in the game division to climb from ?2.9 billion last year to about ?5 billion. R&D costs for the next-gen game console, the PS3, are also taking a toll. Although many think margins have improved for the finance, movie and music businesses, the consensus is that this will not be enough to offset the losses at the electronics and game divisions, which together account for over 80% of consolidated sales."

Sega , in one of their worst years, managed to have worse results than Yuki Brand...

... in a year where their Milk was spiked with poison and people died.

You KNOW something is wrong !

I didn't - it was a warning ... from the inside. Once you get in, you'll never get out.

You know me and Faf actually know each other right? We call each other much worse usually.... fucker.
How could I not? You brandish it like a ward against accusation just about every chance you get - HEY EVERYBODY, I HANG OUT WITH FAF AND I TALK TO PANA OF MY OWN FREE WILL. WOULD SOMEBODY WHO HATES SONY DO SOMETHING LIKE THAT? GUYS?

:)

Thanks. Sounds like their war of attrition should be yielding big victories real soon.

"I didn't - it was a warning ... from the inside. Once you get in, you'll never get out."

cool - we are gonna send you guys some funding so you can go and learn about stuff that you argue about. Spend it wisely.

I assumed your comprehension was good, but that was to do with the fact that i called FAF a bitch and nothing to do with my apparent hatred of sony.

I also don't think i've EVER said "i talk to Pana and Faf! that makes me someone who doesn't hate sony". FYI , my conversations with Pana are usually shouting matches, and Faf is usually as pissed up as i am and we end up talking about tits.

4/10
try harder.

Oh, and while we're dishing the bad Sony news...

Sony Agrees to Halt Gifts for Airtime
By JENNIFER BAYOT
Published: July 25, 2005

Sony BMG Music Entertainment, one of the world's largest record companies, agreed today to stop providing lavish gifts, free trips and other giveaways in exchange for airtime for its artists on radio stations, under the terms of a settlement with the New York attorney general's office.

The settlement, which includes a $10 million payment to a fund for music education, is the first in a broad investigation by Eliot Spitzer, the New York attorney general, into incentives that record companies offer to radio stations in hopes of getting airtime that will raise their artists' profiles, increase a song's ranking and, of course, drive up sales.

From the NYTimes...gotta register. http://www.nytimes.com/2005/07/25/business/25cnd-music.html

To think this is the side of the business the new CEO hails from, and there's already PLENTY of accusations of moneyhats on the SCE side as it is. I'd say it's time to start bailing out now before it gets any worse, fellas.

I think you'd hate Sony too if you bought a PSX :P

On topic... Sony was the number 1 brand in Japan in 2003 and 2004. This year they are 4th. Insignificant? Who knows, but it comes at an interesting time, when their company has got a new CEO, their electronics and gaming divisions are hemorrhaging cash, and their other sides of business are not making as much as they have done before. But it's not all doom and gloom - Rogue Galaxy looks fucking sweet.

At this point I'm convinced that they don't have e-mail, instant messaging, or telephones in Japan. Why else would they have their conversations on a message board? (not this instance, in the past)

johntv: yo, what are you up to tonight?
DCharlie: same ol. games, sushi, and hoes.
johntv: k. holla back, I'll be in the OT forum
DCharlie: pz out

;)

.... it's to hid the fact that me, John tv, Mr Singh, Yellowace, McWild, Faf, Pana, Sho nuff are the same people.

(and i don't like sushi)

i have photographic evidence... outside SCEJ...

nice first post though, i found it funny

re: Conversation - no idea why that happens - over inflated sense of self importance? :D

Kaching,
no worries, I've been down that road before - I doubt any of you guys got slammed as hard as some of the commentary I got few years back on some boards - and it was pure personal insults, not even accusation of fanboyism.
You take the good with the bad I guess - Net can be a scary place, especially if your nick becomes known to many people...

What I wonder on this one is - they call PSP sales sluggish (which in Japan they clearly are) but US seems to be making a killing on the other hand - breaking portable records for tie-ratio as well as hw selling fast and destroying the stigma of UMD being doomed to failure...

Regardless, if you don't think every company does some trickery with numbers then you need more than Martinis (especially one that has just been done for cooking the Tax books!) !
Oh I know that - it's just how things work (I remember reading this conspiracy theory that MS has been faking their profits for years *L* the guy was very convincing about it too).

You forgot Deadmeat - it was proven that Faf is also Deadmeat many years ago.
