MS to ship 1.5M X360 at launch

Second-quarter sales won't meet expectations, in part because the next-generation console isn't shaping up as quite the red-hot seller predicted

There's little doubt that Microsoft's soon-to-be-released Xbox 360 game console will be a hot seller this holiday season -- but just how hot was called into question on Oct. 27, when Microsoft (MSFT) released fiscal first-quarter results.

Sales in the current quarter will come in about $300 million lighter than Wall Street analysts expected, the company said. The culprit, say analysts, is lower-than-expected shipments of the next-generation Xbox console, due out Nov. 22.

GO FIGURE. Analysts had expected between 2 million to 2.5 million consoles to ship in the quarter. But after checking with retailers and other Microsoft partners, Goldman Sachs analyst Rick Sherlund says he believes that figure will be between 1.5 million to 1.7 million.

For Sherlund and others, the reason for the possible shortfall wasn't immediately clear. And Microsoft executives, who have never offered guidance about Xbox shipments, didn't provide any clues on a conference call after results were released. "I'm not sure why they're not shipping more," Sherlund says.

Microsoft did say that it expects to ship 4.5 million to 5.5 million consoles by the end of the fiscal year. Microsoft has a lot riding on the success of the Xbox, and the outlook -- however upbeat -- wasn't cheery enough to boost its shares. The stock slumped in extended trading.

If that 1.5 is just for the US, that might even be considerably high if it's measuring the quarter of the calendar year.

MS's PR people seem to be setting us up for a much, much more serious shortage than that. Hell, 1.5 consoles in the first month and change to the US would be a fucking windfall... no way it's that high, right?

It's all a conspiracy, I tell you. Microsoft actually has the ability to make 6 to 8 million systems by Christmas, but they had to cut production once they realized that GAF trolls aren't buying the system.

Any appearance of a true production shortage is a carefully orchestrated ruse. MS knows that it's more important to fake out the competition than to sell hardware and games to consumers during the christmas shopping season.

Is this guy a joke character ... he's been appearing everywhere posting joke messages.

It's a pretty expensive system when compared to the XBox and the PS2 sitting on the shelf beside it. And really putting the XBox beside the Xbox 360 is really not that impressive a jump for most people.

This gen is nothing like last gen where there very noticable differences between PS1/N64 games and PS2/Xbox/GC/DC that anybody could see. Look at DOA1 to DOA2, or soul edge to soul caliber, the leap this gen will be mild really, better lighting, physics, decreased loading(hopefully). I think the 360 is going to be a tougher sell then Microsoft thinks, I have no doubt it will sell, but the numbers may not be as high as they hope.

I hope Gamestop doesn't fuck me over witih my pre-order... I know stores like to do that sometimes in favor of those who bought accessories.

But, I did pre-order 3 games, that should help right? << *will pre-order an extra controller just in case*

I like this part

".....in part because the next-generation console isn't shaping up as quite the red-hot seller predicted........"

It's a 1.5 technology, nothing new but a souped up XBOX, who would want to buy it but Xbots?

oh they will... they did it to me... i didnt pay it off in full earlier so i was taken off the first shipment.

im hoping microsoft pushes out as many as they can so I can get my system on the 22nd.

Do stores even know how many systems they're each getting in yet, or will they not know that until they actually get the XBOXs?

I hope Microsoft does what Nintendo did to the store I preordered at. That particular store had the most DS preorders in the country, so Nintendo sent them a ton of DSes and they even had some for non-preorders on launch day. Maybe Microsoft will overload this store with 360s too, and I won't have to wait until 2nd shipment.

I tend to agree. A big part of the visual improvements are due to it being able to output HD signals for every game. While most HT afficendios and gamers have already moved to true HD sets there are a lot of people who hadn't. I don't doubt that it'll sell well, but there probably aren't going to be any major shortages.

Enough of this 1.5 crap. Take your fanbaby goggles off and watch some PGR3, Gears of War, NBA2k6, and Kameo videos. If you aren't convinced that the 360 is a next-gen system by that point, you're retarded.

It is a 1.5 tech.

Rev offers an unconventional new gameplay with the controller
PS3 offers new breakthru techs such as Cell and Blu-Ray

What does X360 have to offer? NOTHING breakthrough, slightly improved graphic from xbox? Boo! Next-gen my ass

I'm no analyst, but I predict you won't last long here

You still haven't gone and watched the videos I suggested yet, have you? I guess if you can look at a game like PGR3 or Gears of War and say it has only "slightly better" graphics than what's currently offered on the Xbox, there is no point arguing with you, you've got some problems.

Come on man, it's pretty obvious he's just baiting. You shouldn't even bother. UNLESS, you're reverse baiting him making him post more, thus accelerating the already inevitable ban looming over his head.

In that case...

*applauds*

I'm not sure why they chose the wording they did. Since it appears to be headed for a sell out. Its just MS can only sell as many as they can make through the holiday season which may be less. I hope we see sales number on the 360, because I'm curious to see how many MS can sell through the holiday.

I'm pretty sure it's going to sell out in all territories. 1.5 million really isn't that crazy of a number for a launch system during the holiday season.

What, no praise for the next-gen brilliance of Madden NFL 06???
