MS Xbox 360 HD-DVD Player: Who's getting it?

For anybody on the fence about picking up the drive, Circuit City has a $40 off $200 coupon which makes getting the player more affordable. I'm still considering whether I want to get it though, I'm not a big movie watcher.

For the record, I know a related coupon was floating around in Nov. 2006, but this particular one doesn't expire until 3/31/2007.
I'm sitting on the same fence this very moment. My TV is only 720p, so I'm wondering if it might not be worth it.

This may come off as really stupid, but the HDDVD add-on is priced at $199.99.
They may be asshats and not allow the coupon to be used, unless the coupon counts towards a cumulative total (ie player and a couple of movies).

And if I'm wrong, forget I said anything.

no its confirmed that it works.

man if i have enough money by 3/31 i might get one. and i only have a Samsung LCD but whatev. I feel like investing into the war.

plus i only have a 360 and can't afford a PS3, even less so a Bluray player.

So is MS going to fix the LFE issue?

I was watching an action movie last night and there was like NOTHING coming from the sub. Only when you expected a HUGE explosion did you get a tiny bit of sub.

X360 games use the sub excellently and at full power. Watching an action blu-ray movie on the PS3 shakes the entire room as does Gears of War, but all the HD-DVDs I own have almost no sub coming through the X360 HD-DVD player. It's annoying to the point that I'm thinking about rebuying some of the HD-DVD movies I own on Blu-ray (Warner titles) because the movies feel "broken" without proper LFE.

I'll buy a standalone HD-DVD player eventually in 2-3 years which will fix this, but since there has been word of a patch for the X360 drive...are they planning on fixing the LFE issue?

interesting. i haven't really noticed this. some films i've watched have had really loud LF. i have my sub turned down real low too. i could get stuff to fall off walls if i wanted.

it's the first i've heard of such an issue.

do you know anyone else with the player to check out how their's works? sounds like you've been having other problems (freezes) and such too.

step one is to make sure the issues aren't just localised to your player.

The weak LFE was mentioned by several people since the start of this thread. It's a known issue. It's not that there's no LFE/.1 track going to the sub, but rather that it seems a lot lower than it should be.

Yeah, the low LFE is being fixed. MS is also going to output DD+ and Dolby True HD to DTS at a higher bitrate than current output (1.5MB/sec).. which should give a huge boost to sound quality as well (more than double the current bit rate)...

Hopefully if the revised MOBO with HDMI comes out they will update it to send uncompressed PCM out.

Flippin' sweet. Hopefully it comes out in time for the NIN hd dvd coming out next month :)

Is the sound quality in the HDDVD Last Samurai supposed to be rather unimpressive? It just doesn't that good on my various surround sound speaker systems.

I don't know...but in my honest opinion, I thought Superman Returns sounded better if you bump it up to TrueHD option (I am fully aware of the HD DVD add on not supporting this at the moment.) It just sounds "higher" and has more "Boom" to it...but I mean it could also depend on the hardware. The speakers, woofer, and receiver. I have a yamaha HTR-5730...but also, Im not as anal about sound like I can be on picture tho, so I'm pleased.

Although, I did notice if you take regular dvds and play them on the HD DVD drive that you have better seperation in the audio with the five speakers. I don't know, maybe there was something weird to my xbox360...but games themselves sound awesome. So I don't exactly know. :lol

Probably been asked, but is the HD-DVD drive worth it for a 30' CRT? Will I still notice a big difference from dvd's?

edit: Also, is HD DVD still going strong? I noticed Blu-Ray releases are starting to pick up.
