MtG previews its new Lord of the Rings set

I'm grabbing a few of the collectors boxes for my sealed product collection, but I'm not a fan of the lands. They could have done some amazing stuff for the different land colors, but they stuck with this map design thing.

Rest of the set looks good though. The Ring itself is kinda busted. Gonna be a potential menace in Commander.

It's their own take on the material though. It was never advertised as a 1 to 1 copy and was never meant to be. Wizards does their own takes on all of these IPs that they work with.

I don't see the issue.

I think "their take" looks lazy and shows little understanding of the of the source. Wizard's 40k crossover showed more respect to the original material.

What part of it shows little understanding of the lore based off a single card? How is it disrespectful? The cards are spot on as far as I can see from a lore standpoint. Especially when it comes to their mechanics and their flavor.

They are even doing a limited run of special ring cards based directly on the lore. All of which are in elvish instead of English or another language.

- 300 Elven Ring cards (Obviously because of the 3 Elven rings)

- 700 Dwarven Ring cards (Obviously because of the 7 Dwarven rings)

- 900 Human Ring cards (Obviously based on the 9 Rings of the kings of men)

They also have Tom Bombadil, multiple Samwise cards all of which have him as a support type character, and there is even a "Tempted by the Ring" mechanic built into the set, and Frodo's card is also heavily reflected in the way his story unfolds.

And that's just the stuff we have seen so far. So they seem very tuned into the lore and seem to be doing their best to have the set reflect it just like they did with D&D. Aragorn being black doesn't change that. Sorry if you don't like the choice, but it doesn't make it wrong or mean that they don't care.

Are there cards for any Numenoreans? Isildur? Any Gondorians? Because they'd all have to be black as well. Which is fine.

The problems arise when they make Aragorn a black dude, and the others from his race white - the same way they did with Rings Of Power. Numenor was a multicoloured society, which made zero sense. Same went for the black elves and white elves.

Either lean into it properly and show us you understand the source material, or don't do it at all.

Why would people alive 3000-4000 years ago need to be the same race as their descendant? Aragorn isn't pure Numenorean.

It also could have just been the artist who made the decision and not Wizards. They don't give their artists super detailed "We need exactly this" kind of instructions. They have a lot of freedom in their art. So the other artists might have their own interpretations and art styles.

Wizards has shown they are in tune with the lore from what we have seen so far.

You'll also note I mentioned Gondorians. Aragorn does have a pretty defined race in Tolkein's narrative, so I'd hope they'd understand that in any decisions taken on what colour skin to give him.

This is the company who said Drow and Orcs can‘t be evil anymore.
You clearly didn't see their Streets of New Capenna MTG set. There were very evil Orcs in that set.

Also fairly sure there will be evil Orcs in this set as well.

I like the artwork on these, but agree with the comments on the land cards.

I tried with a few packs for the Transformer's crossover stuff, but never got any.

I do like that they are trying with these crossovers.

Respect for the source material?

It's like a trading card game based on the Dark Star series of novels, but the trading cards have Tracker as being white and Sodogo as native American (both characters are black because the series is set in a mythical version of Africa).

I just don't see why we need to race swap fictional characters.

I've never played Magic but this looks cool as fuck. I want those cards but I know they'll be rare and expensive.

I haven't played in decades but those lands are really lazy. If it wasn't for the color coded nameplates you can't immediately tell what they are.

Its not "there own take" nor is it "there interpretation of the character".
Its clearly a willfull distortion of the character for political points and for what there hoping will result in Financial gain.

Why not make a new faction of black people in LOTR or something then this semi-racist revisionism of European fantasy settings.

I would be fully behind some new mysterious faction of elves or humans that's not white. But multicultural societies are nonsense in Tolkien, it ruins the lore completely.

There are ways to handle this other than hiding under "it's our version of Tolkien". This is the new blackface.

My wife preordered a couple of these sets. She’s excited about this. My coworkers play MTG and they’re always buying cards and playing online. I’ve wanted to attend a launch, but my interests never sees me through. I end up chatting with them about it. A lot of these sagas in MTG can go unnoticed by people not paying attention, so clearly this is working for people like my wife. Did people complain when they did this with Warhammer?

Yes.

However, the Warhammer crossover was only 4 preconstructed commander decks (Including a "Collector Edition" of each) and a handful of reskinned existing MTG cards offered on their Secret Lair site. The commander decks were well designed and incredibly thematic - I purchased all 4 decks myself. They pretty much knocked it out of the park and even the people who don't like the crossovers had to begrudgingly admit it was a great product line.

But Wizards gonna Wizard.......this LotR crossover is their typical bloated product line where each rare/mythic has 4-6 versions, there are 3 booster box types, a starter kit, 4 commander decks, a set booster bundle, a Jumpstart booster box, Secret Lair cards....................etc etc. When you have this much shit, what is the point of buying any of it? Just grab a few singles and ignore the rest.

Yeah, I just ignore the sets that don't interest me. They release so many sets a year these days, if the newest one doesn't interest you, just wait a couple months and there will be something else. Besides, this shit is expensive, if I bought packs from every set they released I'd go broke. Gotta be choosy and these type of crossover sets are an easy pass.

I've never played MTG before. Well I got a starter deck years ago but had nobody to play it with lol.

Are these cards widely available? Are they expensive? How long are they being printed for? I know the one ring card is unique but is there any other rare cards or could I easily build an entire collection?

The set isn't out yet. It's coming out in June. But it should be widely available. There will be pre-built decks and boosters
