Mushihimesama! A Cave Shooter! It's #1!

Kinda sad that there have been likee half a dozen threads devoted to icky Nanostray these last few days but we still don't have a thread for to this week's true #1 and the best shooting release, Mushihimesama. So let's fix that.

If you're not down with the street here's a Gpara preview of the game with tiny screenshots, squished movies, and no english. Bet you wanna mod your PS2 and import it now, eh?

Anyway, I've put a few hours into the game and it's just now "clicked" with me. I love it. Not as much as Espgaluda, but it's a very nice change of pace and I'm impressed by how different all the game modes are.

Original mode is the first choice on the list, and I assumed it would be the easiest, but I'm getting absolutely creamed by it. It's surprisingly straight forward and un-Cave. There's no big scoring gimmick aside from "don't die", you're not punished for bomb use, and the bullet count is pretty low, with very few huge swarms. But while the bullets are fewer they're a helluva lot faster, and it makes this mode feel feel very, very Psikyo. Almost like a Gunbird with the close range attacks taken out and Gradius-style options put in their place. I'm loving how Cave are paying tribute to/ripping off the great dead shmup developers of the late 90s with this and Ibara.

Maniac mode is more in line with a typical Cave game. Total bullet porn and a chaining score system. I'm much more at home with this style, and am doing much better here than in Original, but I think I prefer Original more at the moment. Mainly because it pisses me off so much.

Ultra is just obscene. The screen is covered with purple bullets at nearly all times. I think I made it to the second stage once in this mode, and that was with bombing constantly. I'm never going to be good enough to play this, I don't think.

Arrange is actually the easiest mode, which is the complete opposite of the last 2 Cave home ports. You auto-bomb rather than die when you get hit by a bullet, so you pretty much have 12 lives. And you start with your weapons/options maxxxed out. It's fun.

The port turned out perfectly fine, thankfully. There are a few annoyances, like how the music restarts when you unpause, the graphics are upscaled (but I'm finding it tolerable, as it's nowhere near as irritating as it was in the Psikyo collections), lack of replays, and the Restart option on the pause menu restarts the level rather than the game and should you use it the game refuses to record your high score at the end. But it's very, very close to the quality of Arika's ports.

I really love how video game-y the music is. Not enough of that nowadays. And the levels are just lovely, I think. You can't go wrong ripping off Nausicaa.

So yeah. Anyone else get this yet? Or Star Soldier PSP? I really wanted to get that, too, but Mushi + Pop'n 11 + Chikyuu Boueigun 2 broke the bank.

good to hear that there are no problems with the port. and that's one of the better descriptions i've read of the contrast between original and maniac. my copy should show up shortly. star soldier psp too.

and yeah, the whole nanostray thing is tragic.

I originally typed out this massive, profanity-filled post about how the only cunts bigger than the fucks at Shin'en are the idiots who are killing themselves trying to find a copy of their shitty game. But I deleted it cuz I barely mentioned Mushi and I feared extreme Nanostray hate may lead to, like, Olimario posting in my thread.

Hopefully the long first post and the game's funny name is enough to scare his type off so they don't read this. Shmup threads tend to be one of these few refuges from system wars bullshit on this forum.

My copy should be here today or tomorrow :D Yay for pantyless princess (more like wtf cave)
And speaking of the music, I picked up the OST w/ figure awhile back. It's indeed one of the more fine game scores lately.

Got my paycheck yesterday so I just need to hit the bank tomorrow and then I will be able to order it. Still debating whether I should get the soundtrack set though. I'll see tomorrow.

I just wanted to say that Mushihimesama has some of the most gorgeous 2d I've ever seen, the backgrounds and sprites just look incredible and animate very well...and of course imo there aren't enough insect-themed shmups but anyway. The artwork and design stand out a lot more than Espgaluda or DOJ. I simply just love the way it looks, and of course it's a pretty awesome shooter to boot even though it doesn't really do anything new.

I haven't recieved it yet, but what pray tell is so wrong with Nanostray? It seems that the shooter fanboys dismiss it as shit without so much as a play, and casuals who've played it think it's good fun.

aww. Your mushi thread only had 75 views after over an hour. Everyone is still caught up with the rumors about Nanostray. I liked your rundown on the different modes and your gripes. Thanks for bothering to do a thread for a shooter actually worth owning. YOU ARE TOO GOOD FOR THIS CROWD.

start up that site already, I will pay for a banner ad defaming zelda 2 or something.

Mat, if you played and liked Iridion II, you'll like Nanostray, most likely. Their only truly bad shooter, imho, was the original Iridion 3D.

I saw the videos, I pretty much made up my mind after that. I will stick with DoDonpachi, Dangun Feveron, ESP Ra. De., and Guwange. Even if I have to play them in mame.

yes i cant wait to get back to knoxville so i can play this bad boy, i need links to skill videos to tide me over.

Well, the invisible walls, retarded perspective, life bars, and touch screen weapon switching are all things I'm not fond of. I thought Iridion II was kinda decent, and figured Shin'en would deliver a better game this time out. So I was looking forward to Nanostray. But I'm not giving money to a developer who thinks touch screen controls are a good thing to stick in a shooter.

I don't really hate the game or anything, and I'm sure it's somewhat enjoyable, like Iridion II. But it's sad to see all this hooplah over Nanostray when it would be totally ignored if it weren't "rare" or for DS.

NCS shipped mine yesterday~~~ and they actually remembered to ship it by Priority like I told them to, which means I have a chance of getting it on Tuesday or so. Can I beat Espgaluda before then? Probably not!

Matlock said:
That reminds me of Raiden.
Yeah, it would.

Haven't had much time to play it, but I went through the Arcade (?) mode on normal settting. It's pretty much a straightforward shooter. I don't mind having the screen filled with stuff, but when you're maxed out your shots take up so much room that I was having a hard time doing stuff. Plus it doesn't seem to be the hard; I beat it on normal on my first try (continued once or twice) in like 15 or 20 minutes. Unless the other modes offer a lot more replay, I'm not very impressed. The soundtrack was decent, but far inferior to espgaluda IMO. Unless the other modes really offer a lot more time/gameplay, I'd only reccommend this to the hardest of hardcore shooter fans for what it costs to import it.

I actually have to disagree with Rummy for once here. The port is definitely worse than Arika's work -- the choppy framerate comes in as early as mid-level 3 (as opposed to at the end of the game in Espgaluda), and that's only in original mode. I haven't gotten further yet so perhaps Rummy is right and that particular section is a low in the framerate department. It's definitely pretty bad, though.

As far as the actual game goes, I'm torn. I get hooked to it, but I also can't stand Psikyo's style and thus it kills me that they had to ape it. They do it better, I think, but shock-patterns still piss me off. Also, having no real scoring system feels kinda lame too -- I just thought I hadn't figured it out yet. I've played like three real rounds and I've already "maxed" the first stage if this is the case...that's no fun.

FWIW, people keep saying that the bits of heavy slowdown are faithful to the arcade version.

Unless it's worse than I imagine, I'm used to slowdown in Cave shooters. What irks me is the lack of a properly low-res TATE mode. Bah! Never thought I'd pine for the days of Arika productions, but they did a superb job with DDPDOJ and Galuda.

It's not the fact that it slows down, it's the fact that it jerks back real quick once the enemy in question (there's only one kind of enemy, that I've seen so far, that does it) is destroyed. Definitely not classic, well-planned Cave slowdown. Whether it's a bad design choice by Cave or a bad port job by Taito doesn't really matter in the end, does it? :(

Glad to hear the game's awesome... I told my brother to get this for me for my bday. Now all I need is to get that Japanese PS2... Soon, soon...

Good points all around, thanks.

With the resolution and screen-fillin' spread-shots (plus what looked like a whip laser in another screen), it's fairly resemblant. Altho it's probably fairly different...well...!

You should try Maniac mode. It's supposed to play much more like your usual Cave, with slower bullet fields and a neat scoring system and everything.

Edit: My copy just came %#%(#)%*(# 2 days! via USPS Priority! Across the country! Now THAT's service!

AFAIK, Cave did this port themselves. I've read that here:

• Mihara confirms that CAVE is doing the actual porting of Mushihime

Did you try playing the second, more Cave-faithful mode (Maniac mode)?

What irks me is the lack of a properly low-res TATE mode. Bah!
What's the tate mode like in Mushihimesama?

I have, yeah, and I like it more, but I have to review this so I need to be comfortably knowledgable about all the modes.

Rummy is the second person to say arrange is really fun, though. I can't believe I haven't given it a shot yet. In fact, why am I posting this instead of trying it out right now? :lol

Oh, I see. Thanks for the heads-up, but does anyone know who Mihara is and why his confirmation matters?

He's Mr. Arika, whose Cave fanboyism instigated the lavish ports of DDP-DOJ and ESPgaluda, and, I assume, the current unfortunate standoff between the two companies.

Ah, thanks for the info. I thought the whole Ketsui fiasco bitterness had been resolved, though?

Does it have a tate mode? If it does I'll hook it up to my Dell 2405fpw.
unrelated to the topic, but does yours lag a little? ive only tried dvi on my mac and vga on my pc, the mac lags a bit, i dont think the pc does, wondering if it might be a thing with the dvi. any problems with the various other analog inputs?

i noticed something like this before in the ultra replays, the speed coming out of lag seemed really sudden. it did look predictable at least, if a bit fast. basically there would be a screenful of bullets inducing the slowdown, but towards the end of the pattern with bullets leaving the screen, it looked like it got back up to full speed pretty fast. i didnt look at many original or maniac replays enough to notice stuff like that though.

my only guess (other than just cave screwing up) is something to do with the mushis resolution (running on caves new sh-3 board), but no one really knows what that is it seems, or what low resolutions the ps2 can display.

supposedly cave asked arika to do the port, but they turned it down out of shame over the ketsui thing. or something. mihara also said something weird about putting ketsui on ps3, so i wouldnt be surprised to see cave and arika working together again soon.

Connected to my PC via DVI I don't get any lag, as for the analog input I don't know. I just have not hooked any game consoles to it yet (I have 2 larger HDTVs for gaming).

Hm, it has never been bad enough to kill me and in arrange mode they show they're aware of the jerky slowdown by making your character bomb instead of dying when you get hit...so perhaps using jerky slowdown is intentional? Sounds pretty far-fetched, though.

Oh, right, I remember something like that now that you mention it. Thanks for the reminder. Never heard about the Ketsui port talk, though? That'd be great! I certainly looks to be one of the better "lost" Cave games.

I'm not really impressed with the game, as a shoot'em up fan. nothing really sets it apart from other cave games.

Graphics sure are purdy, though. too bad you don't really notice them when you're the one playing.

i figured arrange mode was to make sucky players feel good about themselves by not dying constantly.

mihara said something like not being able to get a ps3 dev kit yet cause they are a smaller/niche/2d/not graphically impressive games company. sony wants fancy lookin shit for launch, and they only had so many to give out, so arika couldnt get one. but that was a while ago, theyll get one eventually.

that doesnt explain why he wants it on ps3, unless he wants massive additions or something. maybe something to do with the slowdown, ketsui is pretty bad in this regard, worst of the cave games that ive played (some emud, some pcbs), but i havent played galuda yet. ketsui seems to slow down and drop frames, its sorta weird, but still playable at least. and yeah ketsui is "one of the better 'lost' cave games." i consider it the best cave game myself, but i havent played galuda, mushi, or ibara. at the least, i doubt ill like any of their scoring systems more than ketsuis.

it's HERE. i see how you could get hooked on fast shipping. i think i'll play star soldier psp first...i'll save mushihime until i have some time to sit down with it.

and just in case nanostray has inspired a general enthusiasm for shooters here -- and i'm sure it hasn't -- those mushihime and ibara shots are a fine demonstration of what a shooter looks like.

Mushi superplays.

Except for Original mode, which doesn't play like any previous Cave game.

Are you sure you weren't playing on Arrange? Cuz that's pretty much Wuss mode. I got to like the end of stage 4 on my first credit in it. Try the other modes. And don't continue.

I believe Mihara wanted to do Ketsui on PS3 so they could top the Espgaluda arrange mode, which seems silly to me. Does anyone really put much time into the arrange modes? Just do a straight port to PS2 + replay DVD so I can sell my PCB to some collector idiot for $500.

Haven't really had any trouble with jerky slowdown. I'm sure I'll be pissed once I start dying from it, but so far I've barely noticed it. And as already mentioned it seems to be in the PCB, too.

I'm still playing mostly Original, mainly cuz I have no clue how to do that whole counter banking thing in Maniac/Ultra and I'm tired of pulling my hair out trying to figure it out. I'm enjoying not having to worry about a big scoring gimmick for once, but I suck at Psikyo shooters, so I suck at this. It's making me feel bad about myself. If anyone knows how to cheat2win with the autofire and the banking please give me some kind of simple "for dummies" explanation, cuz all the strategy talk over at shmups and click-stick makes me dizzy.

Oh, and screw GAF score competition. It seems like the people in charge of those threads never update the charts. Use Victoly Scores! It's king-sized.

I CONCUR. At the least start a score thread here and use Victoly Scores! along side of the thread for a better updated high score system. It is nice to have some way to talk about the score or strategy along with just posting scores. Who knows, maybe Victoly Scores! will put up that messageboard. *HINT, HINT*

star soldier psp is pretty neat, incidentally. if the gc version felt agreeably like an old pce game, this feels agreeably like an old arcade game -- the vertical format, the autofire, and the alternate ships really improve it. it just has that sense of momentum and constant action that signposts a competent shooter. the old shmups.com reviews referred to this quality -- perhaps scottishly -- as "blastiness." good sound effects too. as portable shooting goes, it's an obvious step above the crap on gba. i doubt i'll have much time for it once i start in on mushihime. but that's hardly a slight.
