Music Files: From iPod to PC?

I think I'm correct in assuming that the iPod does not transfer files from its library to the PC it is connected to. So, in other words, if I reformatted my computer and put all of my music on my iPod, I would not be able to transfer that music back to the newly formatted computer, right? However, are there other programs that can perform this function? I have about fifty gigs of music on this computer and it is urgent that I reformat before the thing dies on me. Help.

WARNING: The first time you connect the ipod up, iTunes may prompt you to sync. Do not let it, otherwise it'll sync the empty PC collection to your ipod, deleting all the songs on your ipod.

have itunes shut down. Connect the ipod up and get it to appear as a drive on your PC. Go to the 'control' (or similar) folder, and there are lots of lettered folders in there.

Copy the lot to a folder on your PC. Then in iTunes, point to the root of that folder and get it to import the songs. That'll recreate your collection.

Then get it to consolidate your collection, which will copy all the songs to your iTunes music folder, and recreate the standard artist/album heirarchy.

I'm sure software like ephpod has the ability to get the music from your ipod as well and organize it automatically.

You must set your iPod to MANUALLY sync. Never let iTunes do it automatically if you forsee reinstalling itunes or deleting anything from your collection.

I use Yamipod for this. I even keep a copy of it on the iPod itself, so I can use the program on other computers.

Copying from the iPod is a bit of a slow process, but it works. If your default media players don't play the resulting files, they've probably been header-stripped or something. Rest assured they will play in iTunes and on your iPod.

Thanks, everyone.

When I had to do that I just zipped my music folder, and then went to My Computer > iPod and transfered it on that way.
So you're saying you zipped it, sent it to your iPod, and then uploaded the zip to the newly formatted computer?

you don't need any software
- plug the iPod in and let the external drive appear (don't install itunes, etc.
- in the drive folder select menu item Tools... Folder options... [View] TAB
- now click "Show hidden files and folders"

all your music now appears

And to think, I was going to bump my similar thread soon anyways, merci.

I'll have to do this in a couple of weeks so I'll be hoping to find the right option.

With messed up filenames, though.

yeah, which is why you scan with itunes, then 'consolidate library' to recreate all your filenames, folder heirarchy etc.

I don't understand why you need extra software.
