The Dresden Dolls

Awesome band! If you like The Fiery Furnaces, odds are you'll like the Dresden Dolls. They're also very strong visually, so check out the videos on their site. Their self-titled debut came out in late April 2004, but I'm just now hearing of them. I absolutely love the music and visual style. They're classified as Brechtian punk cabaret, if that tells you anything. Hope you like.

Soilwork

They have a new album coming out soon. If you look hard enough, you will find that some criminal has leaked it onto the internet! Recommended if you like metal/hardcore/melodic death metal, etc. If you like In Flames you will like Soilwork.

I've been meaning to check them out, but the main reason I haven't picked up their CD is that I'd feel like an ass bringing a CD with the words "Crazy Penis" to the cute girl at the checkout counter.

Lol, i think its a good opportunity to open conversation with the girl, "sorry, do you know if this crazy penis is any good?"

The White Stripes - Under Blackpool Lights
Tenacious D - The Complete Masterworks

Two DVD cases full of love.

The Perishers - a Swedish pop-rock group that has released 2 albums, none of them stateside. HIGHLY recommended if you like Travis (Man Who era). been listening to the albums non-stop these past few days.

I only have one song from them--"Sway," and I can say they're an alright group of kids.

chilled electro-pop. very subtle and simple. if you like The Postal Service, you'll like this.

Cosmic Bus

Patrick Wolf, The Wind in the Wires coming in February! From the sound of it, this is going to be a more laid back, traditional album, leaving behind most of the abrasive laptop fidgetry from Lycanthropy. I lurrv the laptop stuff, but this doesn't make me any less psyched. Some of the album has popped up on Soulseek, but I've avoided downloading any thus far.

For the uninitiated (which is, admittedly, practically everyone save some people who've gotten mixes from me) his music is basically a mix of old world European instrumentation, glitchy, dancable Bjork/Aphex Twin/Mouse On Mars electronic stuff, and amazing vocals and writing. ...And he's cute. :D

Kaiser Chiefs - the single they have on their website makes them sound almost identical to Dogs Die in Hot Cars. so if you like that, check Dogs out.

Junior Boys - everytime i listen to that album, i want to claw my eyes out. and i love the postal service, so go figure. maybe it hasn't "hit" me yet.

More recs:
Apostle of Hustle - one of the side projects of someone in Broken Social Scene. i'm surprised this didn't make it in more 2004-year-end lists. if you like BSS, you will love this.

John Legend - sweet smooth soul/R&B music. with help from Snoop and Kanye.

Shugo Tokumaru - if you like the Books and this new freak-folk movement, you will love this. very chill.

Hooker's Green #1 - enjoy bell woods would probably love this. very much in the vein of SFA but with more jazzy elements. so...BELL WOODS GET THIS (and any other SFA fans).

I'll definitely be looking into this one... Does he/they have an album available?

Oh man, with that recommendation you set very high expectations, yet give me something new to look for. Thank you!

[edit]I'm not finding very much about this band, anywhere. :(

damn. how could that be?
anyway, i'll revise it to, "if you like The Postal Service you may or may not like this album."
personally i actually dont like TPS, but i love this album. but i'm into downtempo/breakbeats/ambient/early new wave stuff...so...

Find anything on them yet? I'm having quite a time with it (aside from their website). I <3 the Books. I'm also looking in to Patrick Wolf :D Oh, and looks like the Books have another album coming out in April *giddy*

Edit: Nevermind. Man, they're fekkin' awesome.

Not to return your dick, but if you want to hear the same old shit, why bother coming in this thread? " :lol "

No, no, no. I didnt mean not to listen to new music (or old music that you havent heard) but it seems that everyone is out weirding each other to prove "indiness" (if thats even a word). I mean I think I'm knowledgable about the music scene; I guess I'm not that indie. :lol

Oh and Im not busting on anyone. Just trying to see whats what. :lol

In my experience with noname indie bands most of them are wanna-be's.

sometimes they have one hit but, if they were any good they wouldn't be noname indie bands. :D

I listened to one Dresden Girls songs and they sound *very* bowie-ish. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

I was actually one of the first people to recommend Dogs Die in Hot Cars here, but I'd say I much prefer Kaiser Chiefs to them, they are a lot more varied than Dogs, you can find a few more Kaiser Chiefs song floating around soulseek - I recommend "Oh My God" (the next single) and "Saturday Night"

I'm pretty sure Kaiser Chiefs will be as big as Franz Ferdinand by the end of this year.

bell: www.hookersgreen.com -- they have some mp3s on their site. drowned in sound also has a short article about them, describing them as somewhat like "if mercury rev listened to miles davis and the whole warp catalogue locked in a small room."

mana: did you find shugo? his album is called "night piece." i'm glad you enjoy it. and new album by the books?!?! count me there.

yeah i thought the DDiHC album was kinda 'samey'. i'll check out this band you recommended, BTW you might wanna check out the fever's "red bedroom" and phoenix's "alphabetical".
as for dresden dolls, they used to play the single "coin operated boy" in RadioIO rock all the time a few months back, a great single. but i think i'd rather enjoy their live shows a lot more.

A lot of this stuff isn't "indie", just so you know.

I think you'll like Kaiser Chiefs! Can't wait for their album in March :D

The Fever's album is sounding pretty good *thumbs up*

Some of you might want to check out a band called "LCD Soundsystem", they're hard to describe but I'd probably say they were kind of similar in style to The Faint. I'm not a huge fan of all their tracks but I think some of you might like them!

The Vanishing - Still Lifes Are Failing

Good, dancey dark wave, sort of in the vein of early Siouxsie and the Banshees. The title track off this album is amazing.

I don't know if it sounds too much like SFA, but I like what I'm hearing. You should extend the recommendation to the rest of the forum, as no one here really seems to care for SFA like I! They won't listen otherwise.

Well...here's some "electronic music" recommendations... :p

Alek Szahala
http://alek.szahala.com/

I heard one of his tracks and I was hooked. I'm gonna ask him if I can use his music for my HL2 MOD.

His CD is available in 128kbps MP3 for free...it's a mix of 9 of his tunes.

http://www.finrg.com/mixes/alek_szahala_xochitlan.mp3

xochitlan.jpg

Tracklist
01. Intro
02. Comet catcher
03. Tlaloc
04. Invitation
05. Afternoon owl
06. Dakstar
07. Caballo
08. The hater
09. Xochitlán

Oh and there's a new track from Brisk and Ham akin to the old skool rave on a new skool tip, not out yet but check out a clip here: http://www.nextgenerationrecords.co.uk/audio/blatant/ram/BB046AA.ram It'd be awesome for Ridge Racers...they gotta go back to their roots musically IMO.

5 Bands and CDs I recommend checking out (in order of greatness):

1. Electric Light Orchestra (ELO): Eldorado

2. Superdrag: In the Valley of Dying Stars

3. Ambulance LTD: LP

4. Paul McCartney: Ram

5. Guided By Voices: The Best of GBV

I've been listening to an EP from a loca Chicago band called "The Changes". It's HOT HOT HOT. Think Dismemberment Plan-esque timbre for guitars and bass but super poppy arrangements, and with a unique sounding singer.

It's weird but they're on the Top 30 (Loyola DJ's are required to play these top 30 at least once a week) at my college station despite not even having a label. Not often WLUW pushes a band, much less an unsigned one.

Really promising stuff.

I have a 5 song EP with no track names or anything, web info on these guys is pretty sparse. :lol

Head Automatica - Decadence

Anyone heard of them? Not sure how well known they are but I'm just checking out their album after hearing a song on the radio, sounds fucking great so far!

Amazon page (with song samples)
A friend of mine lent me a copy of their cd, didn't get much into it. The music itself is okay, kinda dancish inspiriations, but the voice is a little too whiny and the lyrics are pretty bad. I'm sure some people here would like their style though.

Finally H/A gets some love!!!

This album is great!

I've been listening to Storyboard mostly, a local band, but they're gonna be big as they've got some record labels sniffing around already.

Y'all should check me out on MSN so I can share the greatness.
