Music ruined by negative experiences

Anybody have any music they like but can no longer listen to due to negative experiences?

I was rooming with a guy and his girlfriend last year, I had known the guy for a good while before hand, I had just started a new job and hadn't been paid and thus would have to hand over my share of the rent a little later, which he was fine with and everything was cool, I'd just pay when I got paid.

So it's a Friday night, I've had a really long day and I'm just relaxing listening to Beethoven's 9th, when all hell breaks loose, the guy's parents storm in and demand money, I tell them I haven't been paid from my new job yet, they go ballistic, threaten to call the police, ransack through my possessions for weapons, and all sorts of bullshit.

So the shit settles and the next day I pack and go apartment hunting.

And yes, I can no longer listen to Beethoven's 9th. :(

Why couldn't you have been listening to Linkin Park... :(

Some songs or even altogether albums remind me of brief, depressing periods in my life, so I find them slightly bothering. But never to the point where - I can't listen to this.

i dunno... i listen to pretty damn happy music, myself. but sometimes lyrics or even certain melodies can remind me of something i dislike thinking about.

lockii: Perhaps you can remedy that by blazing the parent's house with a molotov cocktail, with Beethoven's 9th playing the background.

j/k of course

I don't think it's happened to me...but I can see how it can happen.

Now that I think about it...some songs remind me of my job (because these songs play all the time at work)...so I'm starting to hate them.

Rei's theme from the Evangelion soundtrack. i broke up with my girlfriend and it was the only song i had in my playlist at the moment. It's been almost nine years and i still get a little choked up when i hear it from time to time.

Nah, I should be good, barring something of that calibre doesn't happen again while I listen to Floyd's Animals.

I can't listen to the Eels' Electro-Shock Blues because I keep thinking of my brother's last week alive. Of course, I was stupid enough to listen to the album while he was dying of cancer in the first place, so I guess it's sort of my fault.

I listened to Modest Mouse's The Moon And Antarctica extensively during a pretty depressing period in my life, and yeah...I have trouble listening to it anymore without being transported back to that time. :/ Although this would seem like a great loss, I really have no urge to ever listen to that album anymore, so I guess it's not so bad...

I can't recall any music that I've ruined by pairing it with a scarring experience. Almost every song I have reminds me of a certain interesting time in my life or mood, though, specific examples being the thong song (paints a vivid picture in my head of freshman summer in high school and one specific trackmeet of mine) and recently Green Days "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" (transports me to the hours of forest searching me and my friend did to test shrooms) and Radioheads "Everything in It's Right Place (puts me in the mushroom mindset, reminds me of the power of it).

Hmmm. For some reason I really had to get those thoughts out.

I had to write a term paper on Good Vibrations. I basically held off on it until the last minute, and I listened to it everywhere I went for about two days. I made a topic here asking for help on it, actually. Still can't listen to it without remembering how tired/stressed I was. :\

I'm curious, what was the whole story behind it? I have a few notions that I hate to admit...

I have a shitload of movies I cant watch anymore thanks to my last relationship.

How do you break up with yourself?

Um.. Ruined Depeche Mode and especially U2's one. So much for being one unit. More like fuck off you depraved psychotic bitch!

Completely idiotic, but one early morning several years ago on the way home from Chateau de Manky; I was late. I was late in getting the parents vehicle back to them in time for their job. I had this anime theme mix tape I had made, and was gunning it home watching for the familiar speed traps.

I put the pedal to the metal in a Buick Century station wagon. I slow down approaching a merge onto an intersecting north bound freeway and haul ass home. All while the All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku theme is playing.

I arrive at my exit and head home, obeying the speed limits for the neighboring community. They're very anal about enforcing traffic laws.

While I'm exiting the freeway, this guy makes a U turn in the middle of the road in this heavily policed community. Suddenly I see cop lights, and I'm like - "Haha! Asshole, busted."

Then I realize the cops are behind me. . .

There are three cop cars behind me. I pull over and kill the music. It turns out I was doing 120MPH, and because of my screwball driving pattern, the cops thought I may have had a warrant out for my arrest and was attempting to ditch them. When in fact I was only slowing down at speed traps and merges. I was completely unaware of them tailing me. :X

Fortunately I didn't lose my license, and as a result; I no longer listen to the Nuku Nuku theme. But I did get a Buick Century to 120MPH without shaking apart and make a five minute run out of what's normally a 20-25 minute ride - SUCK IT! :p

Not really negative, but I'll be damned if Dire Strait's "Romeo and Juliet" (as covered by the Indigo Girls) isn't a complete story of my current relationship.

A lovestruck Romeo sings the streets a serenade
Laying everybody low with a love song that he made
Finds a streetlight, steps out of the shade
Says something like "You and me, babe, how about it?"

Juliet says "Hey, it's Romeo! You nearly give me a heart attack!"
He's underneath the window,
She's singing "Hey-la, my boyfriend's back -
You shouldn't come around here singing up at people like that!
Anyway, whatcha gonna do about it?"

Juliet, the dice was loaded from the start
And I bet and you exploded into my heart
And I forget, I forget the movie song
When you gonna realize it was just that the time was wrong, Juliet?

We come up on different streets
They both were streets of shame
Both dirty, both mean
Yes, and the dream was just the same
And I dreamed your dream for you
And now your dream is real
How can you look at me as if I was just another one of your deals?

When you can fall for chains of silver
You can fall for chains of gold
You can fall for pretty strangers and the promises they hold
You promised me everything - You promised me thick and thin, yeah
Now you just say "Oh, Romeo, yeah,
You know I used to have a scene with him."

Juliet, when we made love you used to cry
You said "I love you like the stars above, I'll love you till I die"
There's a place for us
You know the movie song
When you gonna realize it was just that the time was wrong, Juliet?

I can't do the talks like they talk on the TV
And I can't do a love song like the way its meant to be
I can't do everything but I'll do anything for you
I can't do anything except be in love with you

And all I do is miss you and the way we used to be
All I do is keep the beat to Bad Company
All I do is kiss you through the bars of a rhyme
Julie, I'd do the stars with you, anytime

Juliet, when we made love you used to cry
You said "I love you like the stars above, I'll love you till I die"
There's a place for us
You know the movie song
When you gonna realize it was just that the time was wrong, Juliet?

And a lovestruck Romeo, he sings the streets a serenade
Laying everybody low with a love song that he made
Finds a convenient streetlight, steps out of the shade
And says something like "You and me, babe, how 'bout it?
You and me, babe, how 'bout it..."

I can't listen to Bon Jovi anymore. My first girlfriend was really into them, and ever since we split up, I felt they were a bag of shite.

16th birthday party.

I took my friends and the girl I'd liked all year to dinner, and then to see the new disney movie, Alladin. During the movie, the girl I'd been crushing on all year and my best friend start making out, in the seats next to me. I still can't watch Alladin or hear "A Whole New World' without getting physically ill or pissed off.

College, junior year.

I had a roommate who was the hyper, pseudo-gay theater major. He was a gigantic bitch. He obsessed over Tori Amos 24/7, going so far as to sign posters of her. "To Bitch, I love you, Tori." I imagine if I'd heard Tori Amos before meeting him, I would've like her music, maybe.

Now.

Can't listen to Phish anymore without my wife throwing a hissy fit because her roomates at camp oh-so-many years ago played it non-stop. I developed my liking for them before I met her, and I am punished for it.

Great King Bowser

Property of Kaz Harai
Eurythmics - No More I Love Yous

My brother decided it would be a good idea to repeatedly play this after our dad died. Remember having a good cry when I heard that song.

Can't listen to it anymore.

I use to like Green Day before my sister liked them. Infact, she heard them because I had the CD. Then she totally ruined the band by obsessing over them and turning into a local groupie. It's not just me, she's ruined that band for like two or three other people.

PS: And ruining Halycon for someone should be a crime.

I got my nose broke to Stop Right Now by the Spice Girls if that counts.

I never really liked it anyway, but whenever it comes on I can remember having a completely numb face and spitting blood in some kids face who thought it was funny I got hit.

I was talking to Diablos one day, and he was like yeah this song rocks.

I was like, I listen to [band], and he was like, "They fucking suck. Listen to this instead."

I was like, "But I like this ba-"

"No, they fucking suck. You fucking suck, you poseur idiot."

To this day, I am always reminded of my encounter with Diablos when trying to listen to my favorite band.

Replace Diablos for Tre` where applicable.

Black Sabbath.

I had a female roommate one summer who somehow started dating this 45 year old balding fat slob (think a 45 year old Comic Book Guy,) and as it turned out, her room was right above mine. She would take him up to her room, and turn up the music so it could be heard all around the house and then you'd hear the thumpage. The thing is, she wasn't horrible to look at, and could've done waaaaaaay better.

I just associate Black Sabbath with really bad, fat, nasty, sex.

Keith Sweat music.... back in high school my first "true love" and I use to spend lots of time sitting in her living room listening to Keith Sweat music, just cuddling, enjoying each other's company, suffice to say when I hear it now even though I'm very happy where I am in life now... I get a bit wistful, especially How Deep is Your Love... god the pain....

There was a Tori Amos song playing on the radio when I got in my first and only car crash, knock on wood. Which is funny, because now when I hear Tori, I get the urge to drive my car into the nearest solid object at great speed. Coincidence?

Time ta STEP IT UP
I had just bought the Velvet Revolver cd on June 2nd when a good friend of mine died in a car crash. I remember going to his funeral listening to that music to take my mind off things. It helped, but now that I hear one of their songs played I can't help but think about my friend.
