My 200gb maxtor harddrive just crashed

.. taking with it tons of important stuff.

Second time it happened to me in a few months. I am seriously pissed off now. I was typing some stuff in office and then suddenly I notice a massive slowdown.. then nothing. Reboot.. DISK READ ERROR PRESS CTRL+ALT+DEL

I check that everything is plugged right, even switch the cables around, try the same hd on another drive. Nothing. It's dead

Put it back in the original computer, try it again - nothing. Find an old KNOPPIX cd i had laying around, boot it. WHAT IN THE WORLD! I can see *SOME* partitions.

Operation RESCUE ALL TEH DATA

Check out if theres any cdburning app on that version of knoppix, k3b is there, but of COURSE this version has no dvdr support. Since knoppix is a live-only cd, installing new apps is somewhat of a challenge, depending on the apps.

I download the new iso to my second 120gb that was still connected, burn it, reboot with Knoppix 3.4. Start burning stuff to dvdr at 4x, everything is nice and dandy. I shut it down before leaving to work.

I come back, boot up.. WHAT THE SHIT! Less partitions are showing up, and now the hd access is much slower.

200GB MAXTOR HD MELTDOWN IMMINENT! TO THE ESCAPE PODS!

I exec K3b, wtf, for some reasons it only wants to burn data at 2x (!) .. So i've been burning all my stuff all evening at a miserable 2MB/s

Daa pain, da pain.

Things I Learned from this experience:

1- Maxtor.com has a nice online rma setup.
2- This is the last maxtor hd i ever buy
3- 200GB are nice, but when they crash, losing all that data kinda sucks.
4- knoppix saved the day, again.

I'm gonna burn everything i can , and then I'll ship the hd. But time is running out, while browsing, i noticed that some dirs are now marked as EMPTY FILES (gahh!), while they were perfect just a few hours ago.

Anyhow -- enough of the ide madness, this weekend i'm going to treat myself with a nice semi ghetto raid setup with two raptor 10k rpm drives. Enough of this. I cant afford time/brain power/mental stability/money on this ghetto hd stuff.

I love having 1.5gb of ram. I'm typing this in knoppix while listening to mp3s and burning dvds ;)

My 120gig external Maxtor died a few days after the 1 year warranty. I was fuming. Tech support made me fume even more.

Never buying from those bastards again.

It was all that Jake and male porn. Its a sign from god. Repent now..... JK i'm sorry to hear this man. Go with a seagate or a wd. For external always go with WD and Maxtor.

My Maxtor hd is giving off some funny sounds. I think I think I need to burn some of my stuff on dvd. Too bad it would take like 50 dvds to do the job.

I'm pretty sure my old Maxtor drive was on its last legs when I upgraded, but it was well over three years old.

I'm just glad to have a DVD burner now. Backing up to CD-R sucked. Having 4.7GB a shot is much better.

Same here. I have two ancient 8gig and a 20gig Maxtors. They both still work fine.

People have a single crash and then blame the entire lineup.

ALL HD's crash. Consider yourselves lucky when you've got a HD over 5 years still working. I'm not blaming a single "line-up". I'm Telling you, your HD doesn't last forever, back your shit up now.

Some people report to have nothing but trouble with one brand but no problems whatsoever with the other, for both Maxtor and WD...

... I'm convinced there's another variable.

Anyways, anyone who leaves important stuff on a HD without backups is gambling with time.

I've never owned a maxtor that's lasted me more than a year. Not one.

that's probably a little bit of bad luck, as a few of my friends have had maxtors without any problems, but I won't touch them.

Since i've stuck to either WD or Seagate, I haven't lost a single HD to failure, and all of my change overs have been because I wanted to upgrade.

What do you guys do to your HD's?

Overheat them? Never defrag? Never update drivers? what?

I have never had any hard drive die on me. Only time I ever get rid of one is for upgrading. I think I still have a my first 1gb drive...document storage :)

Oh, and yes I do back everything that is important up...not stupid.

On a side note, I never buy those HUGE drives...whenever I hear of ANY drive dying, it is usually one with tons of space on it (150+)

While on this topic, what's a good program to make the backup process easier -- i.e. I specify directories, then stick in a bunch of DVD-Rs, and that's it?

I have a feeling new HD releases aren't as stable as they should be, but after a couple years they work out earlier production problems.

My 30 GB (Maxtor of course) just died.

I think it was due to overheating though. Well, my C drive is fine.......

Heh :-\

What's a good brand for a drive?

Listen to this man. Upgrade when it's time. Backup constantly. Don't lose your data. It's pretty simple.

A lot of people hate Maxtor. I've never had a problem with them. They tend to get really loud though.

On the REAL bright side (ie not the slut thing), at least it wasn't an IBM.

Shit this topic is scaring. How many DVDs will I need to back up 60gigs worth of Data?

And how many dvds can I buy in a bulk and at what cost?

How long does each dvd take to burn?

About 14-15.

Fry's sells 50 dvd-rs for like $60; I'm sure they're cheaper on the net though.

The speed depends on the write speed of yer drive, of course.

I've never had a hard disk crash on me. One of my PCs is over 7 years old now. Though these are Dells, so they *should* be ultra stable.

I'll be building my own PC for the first time in the next 6-9 months, though, so maybe after that I'll be more worried about backups etc.

You won't do shit faggot. Just admit it. You'll let your collection go to hell before you back it up.

being a computer user from way back when hd's were small and easy to back up... all these huge hard drives get me real nervous.. there pretty much isnt any decent way of backing up all your data short of buying another huge hard drive and just storing it. my 80gb seagate went down in flames a month ago (about 2 years old or so), and i got a 200gb to replace it (couldnt wait for rma.. which reminds me i should send it in). Also one of my 10k wd scsi's went down recently... just a bad season for hard drives i guess. Meanwhile my 6 and 8gig maxtor ides are still going strong 24/7 in my linux box (been running like that for about 5 years now!).

*shrug*

No DJ, I *will* do something about it. Thats why I asked. Hell $50 for 60 DVDs is pretty cheap. Not sure about my dvd write speed though. I know it's a good one though.

How reliable are those external drives you plug in via USB or ethernet?

I backup my entire hard drive at least once a month, and before any major changes to my system (new video card drivers, etc.). I also make sure I have multiple backups available so if necessary I can go back several months to restore my system.

I've had an IBM Deathstar HD fail on me, but because of my backups I was able to get back up and running essentially instantly.

What are we going to do when we hit one terabyte? I'm eyeing that for my next PC (to be built within 12 months). The one thing that's putting me off is the thought of backing it all up. Maybe i'll put in 2 terabytes in a raid 1 config ;)

yeah, I've got a 80GB seagate. they're consider reliable are they?

80GB here too, never had any problems with it! And before that I had a 40GB Seagate, no problems with that and even before that I had a 10GB Seagate which is still going in my friends little sisters PC! Go team Seagate!
