So it's the weekend and I am taking a break from work
My apartment does not have internet access yet we are getting wireless for the whole building which will be sweet.

I can't believe the places I've been to find free WiFi for my powerbook just to check on this forum :)

Last year was so fun in going all over Texas and in Miami

I'm now sitting at a 24 hour Dunkin' Donuts and I may not go home ever :D

don't mind me I'm bored... I need a beer... my kingdom for a bar with WiFi

Krispy Kreme

and...I like KK's Hot and Ready donuts, but I liked DD's Original and Cruller's

Oh, and KK has horrible coffee, while DD is awesome.

I'm in Brideport Connecticut NOT SOUTH BEACH FLORIDA

the music in this DD is driving me nuts

they have the local radio mix of Begees and now "It's raining men"

I just got an airport card, but I don't really know how to detect stray wifi signals. Do you just turn on the card and it automatically pops up, or do you use a stumbler program?

a stumbler type program is best. you can find APs that aren't broadcasting their SSIDs and so on

Airport meaning by Apple?

All I do is keep Airport on all the time if I go to a place I think may have WiFi
I just open my laptop and in about a minute or less the airport signal shows up
Sometimes you get a window that pops up asking if you want to join this network

edit: what the hell is a stumbler I WANT :D

my PDA will show up WiFi signals if close enough. I figure Labtops have something similar

Meaning AP's that just the airport card alone couldn't detect? Like private?

If you're using an Apple laptop, I'd highly recommend going to System Preferences>Network, select Airport and Configure, and then check the box that says Show Airport status in meun bar. This will allow to see your signal strength, the network you're connected to, turn Airpot on/off, join a network, and so on.

Going to check out this MacStumbler program now...

Why doesn't MacStumbler detect my closed network?

MacStumbler works by sending out probe requests and listening for access points to respond. Closed networks by definition don't respond to these types of requests.

Other wireless auditing programs can detect closed networks by putting the card into monitor mode and sniffing raw 802.11 frames. When legitimate clients try to associate with the closed access point, the SSID can be sniffed. Currently there is no known way to enable this type of monitor mode on Apple's driver, so it can't be incorporated into MacStumbler.
sorry, guess you're out of luck

I love sitting in coffeeshops and/or cafeterias with iTunes up browsing everybody else's stuff... you can find real gems, sometimes.

I just got back from going to the place I know has a free wifi connection, and I got nothing. Airport didn't respond, Macstumbler didn't react. I'm a bit sad.

Okay... I just wanted to ask another Mac wireless question without starting another thread

I just got my cable service back and the modem is connected to my Airport Basestation

Now the guy who lives next door has the same Powerbook as me and wants to share my connection (he has cable but wanted to save on not getting the internet package)

This is kinda annoying to me since I feel he just wants to be a cheap ass and wants a free ride

I don't mind sharing my access

My question now is how do I keep my Powerbook's files Secure with him around?

What are the steps of locking up my network if I choose to?

Reading any nintendo thread in the gaming forum will not only likely curb your GAF addiction, but will probably also make you hate life too
