My computer is fucking dying

I need the help of anyone who could possibly know what the fuck is going on with my computer.

There are two things drastically wrong with my computer. The first- if I have my iPod connected to my computer, which is a IBM-based PC, it will not boot the computer. The minute I remove the iPod, however, it boots right up. Now, it's not harming anything, but it is fucking annoying, and I want to fix it.

The second is the worst thing that's probably ever happened to me on any computer. The computer, at random, will lock up all processes and stop booting the computer for about 5-10 seconds. Then, everything will resume as normal for another 5-10 seconds. THEN IT WILL FREEZE AGAIN! It continues this cycle until I am sufficiently pissed off and I manually shut down the computer. This cannot be good. I'm probably going to have to format, but I wanted to see if any of you guys can think of a quicker, less painful solution.

I've taken the following measures already: I've used RegistryFix, used HijackThis to destroy rogue processes, deleted a whole lot of useless programs, defraged, chkdisked, and reinstalled World of Warcraft (the game is basically a virus anyway, maybe a newer copy would make it work. It did not, obviously)

Your second problem sounds like a power supply problem. You might want to make sure it's pluuged all the way in on both sisdes, the computer and wall socket/surge protector. If it still happenes then the PSU might be going out.

Might want to check what's in the Event Log to see if it's traceable there (look for errors obviously).

I had a dying HDD a month back. Turns out the day I buy a WD SE 200GB replacement, the damn thing dies. I was actually at the stage where I was debating about reformatting the drive before putting it away.. didn't get the choice and didn't really care in the end.

Actually, the first problem might be power supply-related as well, if the iPod is sucking juice through its USB/Firewire connection...

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Does this freezing occur more frequently when a CD is inserted?

the first happens to my friend's laptop as well - it'll refuse to boot up if the ipod is plugged into the device. this has less to do with a power issue (i mean, c'mon, it's a simple usb device that's drawing powers within specs) than the BIOS confusing it as the master hard drive and attempting to boot off the sucker.

the second issue is probably the fault of a horribly corrupt operating system. you could have a virus, spyware, or just have a ton of startup processes running in tandem that forces the computer to hit the swap file early or other fun stuff. it's one of the reasons why i reformat my computer every 6 months. it keeps everything snappy and fresh.
