my dog has been seizing all day long :(

The good news - no new seizures today, he's acting normal again, and doesn't seem to be any worse for it all.

The bad news - neurologist has no idea what caused all this. Nothing to suggest to prevent it going forward or anything. All screens came back negative. Their best explanation is maybe he got into something that didn't show up in the bloodwork.

Their advice is to just watch him closely. I work from home, so I'm with my dog 24/7, so I'm super lucky that's possible. But I won't lie - I'm still super nervous and feel like I have kid gloves on around my dog now. I wish I knew what caused this just for peace of mind.

Glad to hear he's doing better. Hopefully it was just a one-time thing.

Something similar happened to my dog, started having seizures and then started walking in circles which became smaller and smaller and his conditioned worsened. In the end he could not sleep and just walked around the living room all day and night bumping into furniture, looking dazed and having a seizure every few hours. I had to cover everything with blankets and move all the furniture to the sides of the room so he had a wide open space in the middle to walk.. spent thousands of dollars on vets and various scans, and skipped work and school. He died 2 weeks after the symptoms started. Shit sucked..

My first dog had seizures from time to time. She was a stray dog, like a pinshher but a little big bigger

The seizures were scary as hell. But it was the 80s and 90s, nobody had dogs around us at that time (really!) So we never knew what to do.

So we just calm her down every time she had a seizure

She lived to 18

Someone is feeling better today

First day in a while that he's really frisky and wants to play

Glad he's better OP. I don't know if there are similarities between seizures in canines and humans, but heightened energy and excitability is sometimes a precursor to later seizures in humans. Take it easy with him and don't let him over-exert himself.

Might want to follow-up with the vet and inquire about that. If I'm wrong, I'm sorry for worrying you.

Oh my god what a cute dog. That's great news that he's feeling better! Hopefully that's the end of that.

I had a little Cockapoo that had seizures. He was on medication that he had to take 2 a days and although he had periodic seizures even on the meds he was always very friendly.

He ended up living until he was about 13, but he wasn't very bright. One of his favorite places to sit was on the back of a couch and every so often he would have a seizure and fall the 4 feet to the floor. Sure enough the next day he would be back up there without a worry in the world.

The vet has come to the conclusion that he has epilepsy. He's been on Phenobarbital for about 2 years now, and hit's helped IMMENSELY. He only had 1 bout of grand mal seizures on the medicine and they were much less severe than the others. Then no seizures for 1.5 years.

They finally put him on phenobarbital, which made him very foggy for a few days, but eventually he was back to normal. He's been fine for almost 3 years now. It's a horrible feeling of helplessness when it happens, so I feel for you.

Wanted to echo these two comments, as I also have an epileptic beagle who's seizures are managed by phenobarbital. HE never had a grand mal, but several moments where it looked like he was drunk - staggering around until he either made it to me, or I him. Lasted a minute or so and he would be fatigued the rest of the day.

The phenobarb made a huge difference, since on the medication for almost 5 years now he's had two small seizures, which did require us to up his dose a bit. None for almost two years now!

Obviously may not be the same situation as your pup, but might be something to ask the vet about if medication might help should this become a regular occurrence.

Oh, and your dog is awesome man. Love those ears, he looks like a lot of fun!

I've got a mini dachshund who has suffered from seizures for just about his whole life. He's almost 17 now. Haven't had him on the seizure meds in years and he gets maybe one or two a month. I believe it's surprisingly common. Seizures can come in all forms, some of which you wouldn't even notice, others more scary. They're not as dangerous as they look, can be managed, and you can still live a long relatively normal life with them. I wish ya the best!

I've been keeping an eye on him, yeah. We haven't gone for walks since (and he's been kind of recovering, so it worked out). He wants to play today, though, which is a bit sad because, for the first time in like a month, it's about to storm outside. So no walk or fetch for him today. He'll just have to be lazy.

I love his stinky ears. They're actually normally floppy, but I said "hey!" for the picture which always makes his ears go up. Ever since he was a puppy, the left one has gone stiff while the right one remains floppy.

My sister has epilepsy so I know all too well how traumatic and upsetting witnessing a loved one seizing can be, pet or family member it doesn't matter. You've got a good doggy and I hope the seizing stops.

Yep phenobarbital is magic dog seizure medicine! My chihuahua started having seizures when he was probably about 5. Vet put him in phenobarbital and even though he still has one about once a year and not as severe and other than that he's been great. He's 11 now and still as playful as a puppy!

Best of luck OP hopefully you and your dog have seen the worst of it!

Wow... its crazy.. my boxer had issues but it ended up being his heart. He was on Sotalol for like 8 years and was fine. I hope everything works out.... maybe he got bit by a spider or ate something..... you never know.

Nice! Glad to see good news in threads like these. Hope he stays feeling well, and good on you for taking good care of him.

My dog started having seizures a year and a half before she passed away, remember going to the vet and them diagnosing her with something mundane as the seizures were so infrequent, some medication and done.

Turns out they were a side effect of small tumors & other cancer issues that eventually claimed her life. In retrospect, I don't think there was much we could have done but all the same I wish we went to more vets or got more tests done... something. Anyway glad to hear everything is alright, dogs are the shit.

Same dog from your avatar? Sorry for your loss either way. Our dog looks like a brown version of whatever your avatar dog is... what breed is that?

Cute Dog OP.

I would be devastated as well if anything happened to my dog. Shes my best friend as well. Glad your dog is doing better

Nah she was a chill bichon frise, she was a rescue dog at roughly 7 years old. I guess their breed have a relatively high chance at a specific cancer that I didn't know about till it was basically too late. The seizures were just the earliest indicators that the vet assured us wouldn't have indicated anything wrong at the time based on tests. Doesn't help much in the end, but it is what it is, you just do what you can and enjoy the time given.

I wish you and your dog all the best, OP. Animals are wonderful creatures but they can be heartbreaking at times. :(

Friday we go in for a follow up exam.

As others have said, hopefully it's a one time thing. He's young so hopefully it's nothing serious and he just got into something that mucked up his system for a while. The only time I have seen seizures in dogs is when they were getting old, and/or had been taken out of physically abusive/horrendous conditions that effected their health eventually as the twilight years came on.

I know it might not be easy in feeling like you have to walk on eggshells around him, but calm attentiveness is good until this gets more sorted out. Fingers crossed he just licked a very small amount of something that is a neurotoxin to dogs from off the floor or outside, and there was no permanent damage.

Hope puppers keeps feeling better and the follow-up is more good news. :)

Just an update since someone pm'd me asking how it's been going. Texas went for his check up and has a clean bill of health. He hasnt had a seizure since this topic was created. Upon someones suggestion we checked for thyroid problems and came back fine. He's back to being a stinky dog. He didnt go for any walks while recovering but he's back in his routine. Here he is being stinky after our walk and fetch at the park. The socks in the picture is his sock rope, he loves his sock rope lol:

Glad to hear he is doing well! I am curious as to what triggered it.

I had to take care of my aunt and uncle's dog who was epileptic a few times and he was fine everytime but one and seeing what happened was freaky.

I would continue to keep your eye on your dog for a good while! If he has episodes again be prepared to pay for good seizure medicine which is a lot of money.

But glad to hear he is doing well!

Pet insurance, my friend. Our last dog was diabetic and required twice-daily insulin. Pet insurance made doing that feasible. Pet insurance would also allow me seizure medicine if I needed it.... but thankfully it seems like I don't.

Came into this thread expecting the worst but I'm glad to see this story had a happy ending. Hope you and your beautiful pup have many more fantastic years together, man.

That's good that your pet insurance covers it since my aunt and uncle's didn't. It was like $400 a month for seizure meds for him.

But overall glad to hear he is doing well! Seizures are fucking scary!

here he is being a stinky puppy. What's been heart breaking today is that the seizures have done a 180 on his personality. He's been growling at everybody who touches him - myself included. He's normally a very loving, very well trained dog. He doesn't even hate cats - he loves the kitties in the neighborhood when we go on walks and will let them sniff him without freaking out.

He is probably confused and worried and not sure what is happening. I hope he is okay or they find out what is wrong to fix him :(

We had this, have good health insurance £8000 of tests later they still don't know what is going on. Put it on some anti epilepsy tablets and they're like.. yeah we don't know if that's the problem now. So the dog is coming off them now.

All I'd say is, be super sure [if this happens to you]. This dog had 2 seizures in a short space of time and I'm like.. we should have just waited for a third. We're none the wiser after all these tests. Just an absolute joke and waste of money putting the dog through blood tests and biopsies.

The actual epilepsy tablets are cheap.
