Quick story from about an hour ago.
So I get to work(no one is there yet) and realize that I need to go take a photo for a clients advertisement. The client is only a short block away from my office and against my better judgement I decide to walk on the ice and snow rather than drive. I cross the street and start walking in that direction when I see a elderly man walking my way. He's very thin with a long beard and walking cane slowly making his way down a sidewalk that I am having trouble traversing.
About 100 ft from me he falls and I can see him struggle a bit then he just stops moving. He's laying on his side in a loose fetal position while still holding his cane. I yell for him to stay there and I try to hustle a little more to get to him. I finally get there and realize how freaking slick it is there. We talk and I tell him i'm going to try to help him off the ice. He screams a bit so I stop and pull out my phone a call the EMS while crouched near him.
At this point another man shows up to help. I tell him that i'm on the phone with EMS. Two more people show up and I ask the lady to bring a chair so we can sit him down and slide the chair off the ice. The whole time the old man is yelling curses at the Ice. We finally get him in the chair and off the ice. His left leg doesn't seem to want to move without causing him pain and we just tell him to stay still.
EMS finally gets there and they say it's the second person in 24 hr thats fell in that exact spot and that they will have someone come out and take care of it. The old man says that he just wants to go home but I tell him that obviously something is broken and he needs to be checked out. He tells us he doesn't want to go because he can't afford it but he doesn't fight it and the EMS load him onto the stretcher and into the ambulance.
I'll admit that I can be a softy sometimes but this guy kind of broke my heart when he said he couldn't afford it. I had $400 in my pocket that I planned to deposit after taking photos and actually though about giving it to him but didn't because I knew that I needed it for some medication for my wife(
). I kind of feel like a dick but I know I shouldn't feel that way.
Anyway, excused any spelling and punctuation mistakes(I'll go back over it when I get a chance). I'm typing this quickly from work when I should be designing advertisements.
Be safe out there GAF. Stay off the Ice and shovel your sidewalk.
Edit: I'm a little sad that it comes off as a healthcare story. I didn't mean it that way but it is a problem. After rereading what I wrote, it totally does.
