Do you all that own ICO have disks that are a purple color on the side opposite the artwork. I don't think it's pirated, but I thought it was weird that the disk is purple-ish underneath.

It's because it's a CD game.

It's because it's on CD. A lot of early PS2 games were. Almost all games are on DVDs now, which are silver on the underside.

your ps2 also makes more sound when loading such a game as the disc spins faster than on dvd.

It's weird that the PAL release was on DVD.

Perhaps it's because they had to put a bit more awesome in it, and thus couldn't fit it on a poxy CD

There are plenty of games released on CDs in Europe and Japan especially since there is a lot more budget games here. Also Sony Euope is known to force developers to squeeze the game into a CD whenever possible (like how KOEI had to remove the japanese language support from Nippon Ichis games and release them on a CD).
