My Little Pony has been a franchise since way before bronies became a thing, and it will continue to be a franchise long after the internet fad and adult fandom die down. I just thought I'd point that out because I saw a bit of "the fad is over, why now?" going on.

Having said that, I wonder if this movie will be related to the show, or it will be a standalone thing like other cartoon movies.

I've a feeling that the movie's going to be a live action/CGI mix, much like they did with the Chipmunk and Smurfs movie, and following that will place them in the "real world" as well. It would theoretically keep costs down while also allowing them to use recognizable actors for advertisement purposes.

Here's hoping I'm surprised.

Yeah, I hope that this will be like the show, in that it has a self-contained world with no humans (besides Equestria Girls), where ponies live alongside mythological creatures and ancient horrors. But there is a very real chance that this could turn out like the trailer for the Paddington Bear movie.

I guess they'll be new designs and stuff. I doubt the current TV serie will still be relevant in 3 years.

Considering there's a 100% CGI Smurfs movie coming up, it feels like the live-action/CGI movies are slowly dying.

First time I hear of this. Just watched the movie, I guess it kinda work since it used to be puppets.

It's very likely that the movie will be a new continuity, but Hasbro has previously expressed the sentiment that previously with My Little Pony, they struggled with establishing cross-continuity faces for the series, like Optimus Prime is for Transformers, and Friendship is Magic solved this problem. Friendship is Magic is the first time that fans have shown such attachment to particular characters and are able to affiliate the characters with the franchise, beyond even Firefly and Wind Whistler from the first generation. Given that, I expect that we'll at least get a good number of returning main characters, particularly Twilight, Dash, and Pinkie, who seem to appear on the most merchandise.

My thoughts as well. While Hasbro has "rebooted" the franchise several times, this could be the first time that so many people have grown attached to specific characters. It's possible the current cast may stick around for the long term the same way notable Transformers and GI Joes have stuck around. In which case, if they do "reboot" it, I half-expect they'll just reuse the characters (plus some new ones) and just tweak their designs/backgrounds like they have for their other franchises.

Holy Shit! they are making a Jem and the Holograms movie?
Next October.

Sequel series with a new cast in the same world (a 4.5, if you will) or Transformers styled reboot (most of the same characters, different universe/setting). Only way I can see Hasbro moving on from FIM at this point.

That doesn't necessarily mean that it will be in continuity with Friendship is Magic. Honestly, I'd rather prefer if it wasn't, because otherwise the show would have to warp to make sure the movie still works in 2017. This could mean a new continuity with the same main characters, though, which I'd be all for. Like I said before, a remake of the pilot story could work pretty well.

Wait so did Equestria Girls not count as a "feature film"?
That was a direct to video movie that got theatrical screenings. In any case, a lot of people don't count that as a real My Little Pony film, because it mostly took place in Dougworld.

Man I hope this isn't CGI. The animation is a big part of the show's charm.

It'll probably be CGI. However, fans have created some really nice looking 3D models, and hopefully a theatrical movie can take its lead from those.

I'm at work, so can someone else post that 3D model of Fluttershy and Flutterbat?

Ditch the "flash animation" or no buy. This is your chance for some classic 2D Hasbro.

This:
“We have a lot of experience working on this particular brand,” and when it comes to producing the animation, technology has brought down costs to a level where it doesn’t need to spend $100 million or more to make the film. Hasbro declined to disclose the budget on the “Pony” pic.
Implies that it will still be flash animation? I think Rainbow Rocks looked bretty good and they were doing a lot of non-standard stuff so I think the movie will still look good either way.

Interesting news. Not quite sure what to think just yet, especially in regards to the writer, who seems to have mostly worked on middling Dreamworks animated films.

Also, 2017 is pretty surprising, especially if the intent is to stay within the FiM Gen 4 continuity as Megan McCarthy seems to imply. Don't get me wrong, I think the show is still pretty healthy right now, but a lot can happen in 3 years. The Hasbro press release seems to imply they'll be sticking with the current look/animation workflow too, which is also interesting.

It's still so far off that it hardly seems worth getting excited about just yet, but I'll definitely be interested in seeing how this all unfolds.

I'm actually glad. That has worn out it's welcome. If there was anything I'd like to see die MORE than that, it's the plot idea where characters of a "fantasy world" find a way into the "real world", and hijinks ensue. Shit like that never floats my boat. I groaned at Masters of the Universe, I groaned at each and every other movie based on a cartoon to do that since then. I fear that's exactly what they plan on doing with MLP. Pony's invade Hollywood... LITERALLY! Pinky Pie gets hooked on Starbucks, Rarity gets swindled by a con artist pretending to be a hot shot Hollywood mogul, promising to make her a world class movie starlet, toss in some orphan kid who is down in the dumps and befriends the ponies, yadda yadda yadda, pack it, seal it, ship it out(another shit movie idea to add to the masses)!

I think the best way it can be tackled is full CG movie, and keep the tone of the Friendship is Magic intact.

I completely forgot there was a fourth Ice Age film. I've seen all of them in theaters too. Man that series really went downhill after the first one.

The problem with MLP:FiM in general is that the writers don't know how to end anything important and rush everything. This goes for major story arcs within the seasons to the comics to the EQG movie.

So for hte love of god, let's fix that shit this time around.

Movie confirmed for 1.5 hours of filler and 10 minutes of plot at the end.

Wow, "#BigScreenMane6" seems pretty clear. I really would have expected some sort of reboot by then. You can't keep the characters and setting fresh forever... only way to find out is to buckle in and enjoy the ride while it lasts, I guess.

Is there really any precedent for taking a currently-running 2D animated series and converting it to 3D-CGI for the big screen? Things like the Smurfs had no active series when they were made. I would have thought you'd have more to risk by almost certainly angering fans of the current artstyle than you could ever hope to gain by potentially drawing in a handful of nonfans... but "Marketing Firm Logic" seems to operate on a completely different wavelength from normal people.

Whatever happens, the series seems bound to live or die by the continuing quality of its writing above and beyond any other factor. Brand New Directions? Existing Status Quo? Some Other Third Thing? Just make it good.

I don't think it'll be that bad, but yeah. Equestria Girls was a bad movie for a lot of reasons, but the rushed deus ex machina ending was kind of unforgivable given that the writers had a MOVIES LENGTH to finish their story. No point in just...ending it.

If your big worry is the pacing, then though I haven't seen it yet, everyone tells me that the pacing of Rainbow Rocks is much better, and even has an honest to goodness even-sided struggle for the final battle, as opposed to one side dominating and then the other then the other.

EQG was better because there was a better villain, and one character really stood out. Unfortunately, per Meghan's usual pattern, she was tossed off to the side so it could be a Twilight story up until the ending, then the character gets to be a part of the story. Kind of like she did with Cadance a few times.

It does have an even bigger Deus Ex Machina moment at the end though.
