they're basically furries.

Curiously, this is the same way MLP got banned from somethingawful. People threadshitting with pony gore/porn/creepy man-cosplay until the mods got tired of moderating and banned all mention of ponies. It would be a shame to see NeoGAF emulate somethingawful of all forums.

Why the fuck are you looking at My Little Pony porn? You might be a little obsessive about this.

Yeah, the youtube fun ends after Episode 2. No more videos there all the way until Episode 13. Oh well, it was getting pretty good :( Not about to skip 10+ episodes of a series and I don't have hub or whatever network that its currently airing on.

Hmmm? They might not be on that channel, but they're all over youtube. Wikipedia the episode name, then type the name into youtube and you'll have it in no time flat.

Please save us a repeat of what happened on 4chan and Something Awful. GAF's better than that.

I don't think you're so stupid that you don't realize how unrealistic that is. But if you actually do believe it, then try going to the gaming side and telling them about all the fucked up video game porn that's been made over the years and how every one of them are guilty by association.

So you got any legitimate arguments, or are you 100% straight trolling here?

-sigh-

Really fellows? We have people who troll "My Little Pony" viewers, with all the other weird, unusual, funny, strange, quirky, and embarrassingly nerdy stuff we have on GAF?

Let 'em be. If some people like this show, let them watch it. They aren't disturbing you nor I.

I am also surprised at the pedigree this show has. A pedigree which, in turn, makes it unsurprising that it'd have some sort of adult fanbase. Or is everyone going to tell me they hated the Powerpuff Girls, too, as it'd make them pedophiliacs by association? I enjoyed watching the PPG until late in my teens, and I'm no pedo.

Saying you don't like show X because it's too saccharine and simplistic or whatever is totally okay.

Saying you don't like show X because everyone who watches show X is a closet pedo is... well, pretty fucking stupid, man. It looks worse on you than on actual closet pedos.

EDIT: Okay, not pedo. Furry. Point still stands.

Well it IS a cartoon aimed for girls aged 6 to 12... So instinctively, if all of us were 6 to 12 we'd auto get that "ehh" look if one of the guys next to us said they watched that cartoon or if they watched barbie or something.

Fast forward that and we're all a bunch of young adults now - watching a kids show is probably fine now cause we can all accept different tastes... But hell, I'd still find watching a cartoon aimed solely at girls a bit more difficult than one just aimed solely at kids like Airbender (excluding the toddler stuff like Barney and such).

But that being said, I always thought Carebears kicked ass cause they each had their own unique laser beam attack, that Fox series with the flying scarecrow was epic, and Bumbo had the best intro ever. I'm already weird so what the hell I'll watch some, coining it as a "uh wrong channel" thing if I actually get addicted.

OK, sanity check time.

I know for sure that this show won't be everybody's cup of tea, and I respect that, as I should. I like it a lot, and as most fans of anything, I want to spread the word that it is a Good Thing, as I think many more people can appreciate it when they're able to get their minds past the perceived social stigma of liking something originally oriented at young girls.

That's why I wanted to make an OT out of this, in order to spread awareness, but not to the point of trying to bash it into people's skulls, as we've seen what lies down that road (twice - at 4chan and Something Awful, no less; I think this happened because so many people there tend to be annoying jerkclowns, regardless of the fandoms they belong to). People who don't like it are free to leave their honest opinion, but I would like this thread to be a legitimate, civil, friendly discussion, speculation and opinion-trading forum, and not a place where people's tastes are judged or mocked or where senseless bickering becomes the rule. I'm sure most people here can agree with me.

I will keep posting information and opinion here as long as I sense (and have) interest in this, and without pretending to "own" the thread, I would very much like to see other people from this forum that I admire so, do it too. Make it fun, bronies. :)

Heh, I'm actually not a native english speaker, as many people might have noticed if they read my text carefully (I had to edit it several times because I kept detecting small mistakes). "Exímio" is not that uncommon a word in portuguese, so I just translated it directly and ended up seeming pretentious. Not out of place, knowing we're talking about Rarity. ;)

Why are some of them unicorns and some just ponies?
It seems to be akin to human races, but a little more pronounced. Different kinds of ponies originated in different geographic areas, but they miscigenated as they travelled around. The capital of Canterlot is mainly inhabited by unicorns, Ponyville was founded by earth ponies, and Cloudsdale, obviously, is mainly home to pegasi.

Only the royal princesses have both wings and a horn, though. Must be a deity thing.

KibblesBits said:
Seems like all the conflict is DONE in the first two episodes. MLP from the 80s had epic battles all the time IIRC.
Yeah, most of the time it's mainly pony sitcom, with some "epic-er" episodes thrown in once in a while for good measure. It still works wonderfully, though, because the characters are so enjoyable. And you don't need to have an eeeeeevil antagonist to have conflict - especially when the character's fears, flaws, limitations and differences are so well defined. It is possible that, as the dust settles and we run into season 2, we will see a larger quota of adventuring around, but I'm still okay with it as it is.

Anyway, the episodes with the most "epic" feel would be, in my opinion:

- 1.7 "Dragonshy": The ponies must travel to a mountain to dislodge a sleeping dragon.
- 1.10 "Swarm of the Century": Think "The Trouble with Tribbles", but with ponies.
- 1.15 "Feeling Pinkie Keen": Twilight tries to explain Pinkie Pie's weird paranormal ability. It starts up harmless enough, but scales to
a confrontation with a giant hydra
.
- 1.16 "Sonic Rainboom": Rainbow Dash enters a nation-wide flying competition.

My favorite episode so far was on the other week; the Rarity fashion show one. Love the music from that episode.

Yeah, I loved that episode too (1.14 - Suited for Success). Rarity's song was fabulous, and someone pointed out that it's an homage to "Putting it Together", a musical number by Stephen Sondheim (see it here).

Apart from that, I'd be willing to bet that any web designer would be able to identify with Rarity's situation, and it's probably the best episode to break in creative types.

I thought this thread was about the real MLP cartoon, not that powerpuffgirlsstuff.

Including giant enemy crabs and evil plants!

There is an episode about a young pony trying to get her "cutie mark", which is the little image that appears on their butts. At the end of the episode, the ponies have a cutie mark celebration an call it a "Cutie-ñera", a play on Quinceañera.

If Oscar Wilde were alive, he'd be a freelance writer for this show.

Actually, speaking of PowerPuffGirls, my wikipedia hunt has revealed they did a special, one-off series finale episode to finish it off a couple of years ago that I simply must hunt down. That show (and its movie) were awesome.

I'm really curious now about its popularity. There's either subliminal messages in the show or this is just some phenomenon of people wanting to be a part of the ingroup. Psychological papers could be written on this shit.

I mean, it's good and cute but wow.

By the way, the best way to make .gifs is to use Photoshop CS3 or above and a player that can sift frame by frame and save out images to a directory.

300chf ain't shit to me
as a kid i absolutely adored my little pony toys and the tv show/movie. my sister, my best friend and i amassed a huge collection of different ones and would spend hours playing with them and styling their manes/tails.

i was also a huge PPG fan back in the day (still am actually) so those things, combined with reading this thread, spurred me to watch the first episode on youtube. it didn't feel as nostalgic as i thought it would, but i think that has to do with the drastically different art style and more modern storytelling. enjoyed it though!

Anecdote: I was at the supermarket today and saw a must be 60 year old grey haired man dressed in the clothes of a twenty-something woman. 3/4 length belted cardigan, skinny jeans and knee length leather boots. I laughed so fucking hard but I don't want that dude to change. I don't get it, but who cares?

This sounds like trolling but my point is hey man, whatever makes you happy. The fact that My Little Pony is full blown internet thing is hysterical to me in the same way that dude was. I watched the first episode and don't see the appeal for adults but I don't see the appeal of How I Met Your Mother either and people seem to love that.

So yeah in summary: shine on you crazy diamonds.

It's smartly written, funny and fully of happiness sugar. It's a cartoon! Who doesn't love cartoons? Republicans, that's who.

I'm not enjoying it because it's internet famous or whatever. I stumbled across this thread, thought "really, people watch this?" and then watched an episode and I was all OH MY GOD this is actually really good I have to watch more and then I did and now I can't stop because then the sugar rush will stop and I'll be sad and stuff.

I don't think anyone else uses this method, but I use BS player. It's a light program with a bit of a crap GUI but you can skip back and forth over frames and press a key to export the frame as JPEG, then compile them into an animation with Adobe Bridge and Photoshop.

I think a lot of people use this thing called VirtualDub to make their .gifs so that might be worth checking out.

Going to grab this for my girlfriend as I think she'd love it! Cheers.

Maybe you should have stopped posting after the initial trolling attempts, when you seemed serious and before you stepped over the line into obsessive.
Now you just seem like a guy whose family was killed and dog was raped by ponies and think everyone who likes this show would do the same if they had the chance.
But meh, some peple like watching this in their spare time, some people like doing more productive stuff and some people (you) like trolling internet message boards in their spare time. I don't get it but whatever floats your boat I guess.

Time for a little more information for newcomers regarding the meme status of this show:

Who the hell is Derpy Hooves?

Derpy Hooves is the name fans gave to a certain background character who has repeatedly appeared in several episodes of MLP:FiM.

Back in episode 1.1 (17:32), an apparent animation error caused one of the generic background characters to briefly appear with crossed eyes. Other instances of the same generic pony appeared with eyes in correct position, but for some reason, this particular scene stuck with some viewers.

The fandom, back then only a fraction of what it is today, inexplicably warmed up to that particularly silly looking pegasus pony, and crossing over this element with the popular "derp" meme, named her "Derpy Hooves". Soon, this phenomenon grew out of proportion, with several fans developing Derpy's character to great detail, and establishing her as a mainstay in the MLP:FiM "fanon".

The prevalent view is that Derpy works for the Ponyville post office as a mailpony, despite her vision impairment. Some people insist that she is mentally handicapped and affected with Wernicke's aphasia. Some others affirm that, apart from her sight problems, she is a totally normal pony, if only a little airheaded.

The production team for MLP:FiM is undoubtedly aware of this phenomenon. After Derpy's first googly-eyed "appearance", which was probably accidental, there have been several instances that point to some kind of integration of this character in FiM canon, due to the volume of fan response. Some of these instances are:

- Being created as a generic background pony, she appears in several episodes. However, the production team seemed to go out of their way to specifically make her appear with the same crossed eyes that made her popular, in episodes 1.15 (11:09) and 1.16 (6:20, 12:10).
- In her appearance in episode 1.15, she is shown as apparently working with a delivery company, giving echo to fan characterization.
- In episode 1.11 (17:23), the leader of a squad of 4 pegasi alludes to a missing member of her squad, referring to her by the name Ditzy Doo, and Rainbow Dash describes her as a "feather-brain". Earlier in that episode (6:41), we had gotten a glimpse of that same squad before Ditzy got lost, and it seems like the missing member is indeed the pegasus fans know as Derpy. Although this episode was written way before the "Derpy phenomenon", it is possible that, should Ditzy make an appearance in the future, the producers may use "Derpy"'s model to portray her.

This is a great example of funny back-and-forth interaction between the show producers and their fans, and we can only wait to see where and when Derpy will appear again.

Yes! I've noticed the show has all kinds of crazy references like that; stuff that kids and even some adults would never even pick up on.

That episode also reminded me a lot of Project Runway, how sometimes designers will have client challenges and Tim Gunn will always remind the designers to not give in to the demands of the client. There is giving the client something they will like and that is relevant to who the designer is, and then there is letting the client just design their own outfit.

Nostalgia is what got me to give it a chance and start watching. The fact that the show is actually good; and goes beyond the call of duty for a 'kid's cartoon' is what keeps me coming back week after week.

Like I said, I have a deep love for My Little Pony as I used to be a collector when I was younger. But I never stuck around during the 2000's reboots of the cartoon because it was pure crap. Just mindless dribble meant to sell toys with no real love/care put in or any desire to entertain.

The fact that there is a team behind the ponies who cares now; I want to support it as much as possible. It's really a fun and amazing show, and I absolutely love it to pieces!

Myke Greywolf said:

The whole Derpy Hooves thing is a little fanwanky; but it's kind of funny. I love the response of her being an actual background character in the show now. Fun to spot her; sort of like how in some cartoons (Blues Clues, Dora, Adventure Time) there is a little bug or something that pops up in the background in episodes as sort of a hidden character on the show.
