My pup, Meatball, has been having some health problems. She was very depressed and she wasn't eating or going to the bathroom, so we took her to the vet. He gave her Lamotil and Flagyl for her ailments and they are working wonderfully. Within the first couple of doses she was eating and pooping again and her spirits rose.

Well, 3 days later (today), I noticed little white worms moving around in her poop. Part of me says that her medication is finally working and those worms found their way out of her body via poop. The other part of me says "uh-oh! this is a major problem-O!".

What should I do?!
:(

Did you get her dewormed when you got her?

ring the vet and ask if this is expected or if you should bring the puppy back to the vet.

I'm guessing your vet doesn't work sundays. Call him/her in the morning and ask about it.

I know nothing about animal health, or dogs as a matter of fact, but I guess you should just keep up her medicine, and continue to watch her. Is she exhibiting any other symptoms?

I will call the vet tomorrow, but I may consider calling the emergency animal clinic to get their advice. I'm also posting this on a pet forum where vets visit.

She's fine otherwise. She's eating and playing and wagging her tail. She's such a good pup.

Call the Vet the first day they are in the office, don't take chances. If your puppy shows any obvious signs of distress, call the vet immediately (many vets have emergency services that will page a vet even on Sunday, but it will be expensive).

I'm not really sure if it's a good sign that they are still alive (wriggling and moving around). When my dog had worms, she was pooping them out like string cheese and they were wrigglin' around in the poo. After the medication, they still came out for a few poos, but they were static and dead.

There were maybe 10 or 15 of them in there and only 2 were moving. They were small, too.... like the size of a fingernail clipping.

The fact that they're coming out is good, means the de-wormer worked. But calling the VET can't hurt I reckon...

It's lucky you took a really good look at the shit. Smell is important, take a good sniff, if it stinks real bad, that's good too.

I just got a new puppy too (my 1 year old cat died last week because of feline leukimia, so I cant have cats for a while till the virus has died in the environment :().. got him from the pound and it looks like his old owner fed him table scraps.. he will eat his rawhide chews and milkbone.. but he doesnt really want his kibble. He will eat wet dog food ok, and will eat the kibble with some coaxing, but he really really wants table scraps...

good luck with yours, it sounds like its a dewormer that is working properly.. but I would call the vet first thing tommorow.

You better taste the poo to make sure everything is ok.
You know I watched a documentary on a rural Korean family. Apparently it was explaining how the children look after their parents when they grew old. Apparently the older generation would taste their parents poo to see if everything was okay.

It's a tapeworm. My cat had the same problem. It's by-far the least dangerous of all the worms, and should present no health risk to your dog... but you should still take him in soon. My vet said that they're more disgusting to the owners than they are painful to the animal.

What you're seeing is the tail end segments of the worm which they use to reproduce. If you have other dogs, make sure they don't eat that shit. The actual tapeworm is inside your dog's intestines, and is several inches long.

Good times.

Hang out with Steve.
Pretty much ALL puppies have worms. You won't see them in the poop unless the de-worming medicine is working. So as a few others have said, this is a good sign. Call your vet anyway, but the same thing happened with one of my dogs when she was a pup and the vet told me the same thing I'm telling you.

Yeah, same thing was going on with my dog about three days after we got him. Freaked me out though, that's some seriously nasty stuff to see white worms crawling around in the poop.

Hahaha my dog wouldn't eat once for a long long time and he wouldn't poop. We eventually brought him to the emergency room and they did an xray and he ate a freaken plastic bag.

dogs are like vacuum cleaners. You gotta watch that shit because they will eat EVERYTHING. Mine is fond of cat sand for some reason. :lol

Living worms is a bad sign but the eggs may have passed out into the fecal matter and hatched out side the dog depends on the type of worm I guess I haven’t studied any that attack dog’s just live stock.

Oli also try to mix up your dog’s diet, my pooch was very fussy when she was young but try to make her dinner yourself. It generally works out cheaper then buying can food and is much better for your dog.

Bring the dog to the vet and De Worm the meat puppet.

One day I woke up and i saw these things that looked like fried rice on my bed that were dead.
I lifted my pup serenes tail to see these maggot like beings under her tail.
I immediatly brought her to the vet they handled it.
I advise you do the same over the counter pills aren't the same.

Bring her before these things eat her insides!!

Worms should be dead after deworming. Worms that are alive are not a good thing. It's a tapeworm and not an emergency. My cat got them from being outside and having fleas (before we brought him in - we never had fleas in the house). But where I found them was in the water dish. I had one of those fountains that circulate water for cats. I was cleaning it and saw a little rice looking thing in there. Then it moved.

Disgust and gagging ensued.

The bad part is that I had to bring each one into the vet for the medicine. What a hassle.

This is why I will never own a dog... I love dogs... but the clean-up and maintenance is a pain or in this case a worm in the ass.

Give me a bird anyday... clean up the paper... if it gets sick open the front door.

It's best to de-worm a dog as soon as possible. If it's left untreated, it can eventually lead to Heart Worms, and that basically = death.

In fact just for kicks you should probably ask the vet about heart worm pills.

StoOgE

First tragedy, then farce.
yeah, you NEED to have your dog on heart worm pills (heartgaurd is good stuff, plus it tastes like a treat so the dog likes it).. you do not want to have to go through heart worm treatment, its very rough on the dog and the treatment can kill it (but the heartworms will for sure)..

also you should probably see about getting advantage to get rid of flee's.. it will greatly reduce the chances of the dog getting worms or anything bad in the future...

I think your dog is too young for either of these, but they have booster shots for puppies. Also, get a Parva vaccine. Its only good for a year I think.. but if your dog gets Parva it will die (there is no cure) and your house will be infected for up to two years.. which means you couldnt get a new dog for that long... and a rabies vaccine too..

my new puppy has allready cost me a couple hundred dollars just in doctor bills and there isnt anything wrong with him.. I got too used to cats who take care of themselves so well.

Man I know. Compared to dogs, cats are so self-sufficient. Not to mention responsible.

Give them a litter box, a dish of water, and enough food, and they're good to go for years.

I wish cats were cheap (I have 5). The problem with cats is that by the time you notice there is a problem, it is too late. My one cat over the course of the last 4 months cost me close to $800.

I've had my Lab on Sentinel, a once a month pill that combines flea and heartworm control, and he's never had a problem with either.

I don't think worms in the digestive tract can lead to heartworms, as Tritroid said. They are entirely separate parasites. Heartworms are transmitted by mosquitoes.

BTW, I would get a cat only if I can find one that that likes to go on 12-mile hiking trips with me.

Is that legal? I know in my home town you can only have so many of a given animal, I think it's 3 cats or something...

Well they're actually still kittens. See, the 7 of them were born on my grandpa's farm, and I knew the momma cat, so I figured they'd be taken care of. Well I found the mother dead on the roadside one day, and since they were still so young and most likely would have been eaten (coyotes are everywhere on his farm) I had to take them back with me and let them romp in my backyard. I've been trying to give 6 of them away, but nobody seems to want a growing kitten at this point.

I've decided to keep the runt since she's so cute, and I already had two full-grown cats in the house. That = 9.

On top of that I have 3 dogs. D:

I'll have to check that Sentinal or whatever it is.. Ive been giving my Dog advantage and heartgaurd. They work really well, but if I could move him to one pill it would be easier on both of us. and maybe hit my wallet a bit less..

Hooray! They're completely gone!
Amen to the expensive dog thing. Meatball has cost me $250 plus already. Yikes!
It's worth it, though. It's hard, but worth it.

Here she is this morning.
