I've tried playing Vagrant Story from the start several times. Every time I've loved it-- the graphics, the art, the story-- but I get overwhelmed with the weapon building, chaining, armor, and the technicality of the game and end up giving up every time. I think I am too anal to play this game (or maybe not anal enough?) Usually I can hack it through complex games but this just daunted me to no end. Does it get better later on or is it always hellish keeping track of what weapon to use on what enemy or what armor to use where?
I'd really like to beat this game at some point-- it's been sitting in my queue for years...
Once i got used to all of the systems and understood them all, it became second natrue to me. Luckily, you do not have to switch weapons too often thanks to there being only 2-3 types of enemies in the same region.
If you are having trouble keeping track of what weapon to use on what enemy pick 6 weapons and level each of them on a different enemy and name the weapon after the enemy. That way you can easily keep track of what weapon is meant for what enemy. Personally, i really didnt concern myself with the edge of the weapon to much. I think most of my weapons were slash/edge(forget which term is correct) and i only had 1 other piercing and 1 other blunt weapon.
Concerning armor, if you want to keep it simple just wear armor that does not have any severly negative monster aspect to it. That way you wont have to worry about changing your armor all the time, youll just have to worry about changing your weapon and your accessory.
If you are having trouble chaining you should get used to chaining using a crossbow. It is much much easier chaining with a crossbow for some reason. And their you can work on your timing of hitting a button ecactly when the bolt or arrow hits the monster. Just make sure that you hit a different button than you did previously or the chain will fail. an example would be Square, Circle, Square. the chain will fail if you do Circle, Square, Square. Just make sure you set different chain attacks to the buttons. I found it the best to just focus on chains that increased damage since its rather hard to do damage in VS.
Also, i might be mistaken but i think weapon skills have different attributes(pierce, blunt, edge) and if you come across a boss that is strong versus edge and weak versus blunt but your weapon for that monster is edge, you could just get away with using the weapon skill and healing a lot. At least i think thats what i did when i faced that situation.
Also, the more you chain the more damage you will do, however your risk points will go up, and if you are not careful and get your risk down through items and get hit by the enemy you will take a lot more damage than if you had no risk. I found it easier to just make chains of 9, i think at 10 the risk seems to go up exponetially, to control your risk so you dont get severly jacked and thus having to use a lot of items to lower your risk and raise your health.
Well, like i said thanks to each region being inhabited by only 2-3 enemies and most of the time having 1 predominant enemy it is not too cumbersome having to switch weapons, and etc to make sure you can hit them.
Actually i think it would be better if you looked at a blacksmith faq at gamefaqs, and just look at the basics to see what armor type(Iron, Hagane etc) is able to combine with another type of armor to create something better. I remember that Iron and Bronze combined makes hagane, which is a much better material.
