"My Xbox 360 Died and I Lived to tell the story" Official Thread

Well looks like my second 360 might be on the way out (had it for over a year). Had a power flicker and it just RROD'd (it's hooked up to a surge protector BTW).

Power surges/fluctuations have been known to cause one-time RRODs.

i got my 360 on launch night.

never had any issues till about a month ago.

it locked up and started getting strange blue static in games.

last night i turned it on and it froze up within 2 minutes of being on.

when i restarted it, RRoD.

now i must decide if i can find a falcon Elite and buy that while i wait for the coffin.

are there any Falcon Elite's out there yet?

I just picked up my 074205 Falcon Elite last Sunday. I was in Best Buy yesterday here in Ohio and they had 14 Elite Falcons on the floor.

Thankfully it booted up again. Appears to be working fine, but I'm moving over some of my saves to my memory unit right now just in case. I've been trying to buy an Elite for over a month now anyway but they're all sold out everywhere.

You can't send your 360 back to Microsoft with an "intermittent" RROD problem can you? With my first one (under Gamestop warranty) they exchanged it right away, no questions asked. Wondering if MS's is like that or if it's required to RROD on bootup when they check it...
I'm pretty sure you can.

It's been 2 months and still they have not restored my Arcade game licenses, despite 90 minutes on the phone and yelling at them last time.

MS needs to realize people will stop buying their shit because of things like this.

I have to say, I'm very impressed by the speediness of Microsoft's repair system. I sent the xbox in this monday, and I got it back today. With that being said, I am not at all impressed by the quality of the replacement. Five minutes in, and I get a RROD :/

I don't know where you are, but in Canada all they do is send out a different, already "fixed" one when they receive yours. Hence the speedy recovery.

Tell me about it. But I guess I should be happy in some way. I mean, I get another free month of xbox live gold!

And what a 'great' fixed xbox they sent me. I'm pretty sure it was destined for failure once I heard something rattle inside the xbox. Also,

I guess they must test these things too rigorously.

Got my coffin yesterday, dropped it off at a UPS center today. Horray for a 360-less Christmas. :(

That's reassuring. My 360 has been working fine since that one RROD so hopefully it has some life in it yet.

That is normal as far as I know. It's a little sensor thingy that tells the Xbox 360 what position it's standing in (vertical or horizontal) so that it could switch the rings of light to their proper places.

Damn, it seems like a lot of launch 360's are dieing this month. But anyways, for those of you on the US east coast and recently just got their Xbox back how long did it take? I'm hoping that I'll get mine back by the end of the month but fat chance that'll happen...

Yeah MS implemented a uber secret self destruct timer, to boost the X360 holiday sales!! :lol
Pretty smart.. heh.

Yep. All 360's make a little rattle when you move them from vertial - horiztonal.

my coffin came in on wednesday , For some reason I did not get UPS, but a fedex overnight box.

So it should have been back with MS this Friday. Let's see how long the wait will be.

My Elite started giving me disk read errors with every game after just a day.

Honestly, I think I killed it with all the Mass Effect dialogue skipping when I kept dying at one of the initial bosses (blue alien lady with cronies). I was at level 15 and it took me like 20 tries to beat her. Took it back to the shop and they swapped it for a new one.

Both models are Falcon 2 175w BenQ drive versions. So at least in that sense I'm lucky.

Man, I've been struck twice with bad luck in video game systems, all within a month.

First, after trying to start up Mass Effect (I had already beat it once, thank God), I got the RROD. That was on Nov 30th (The very same day, I bought a DS Lite w/ Zelda). My 360 is on its way back to me now, hopefully on the 24th if not the 26th. Then today, my DS Lite stops working correctly. The touch screen works, but there's no display, only a pure white screen. So now I gotta send it back to Nintendo for repairs. At least the nearest repair center is close (Syracuse NY, I believe they said).

Maybe this is someone's way of telling me to lay off video games for a while. If my computer stops working next I'm gonna go berserk.

Christmas Eve, of all days.

I turned my 360 on to play some Mass Effect, but the realized I need to connect it to the internet to recover my gamertag. So I turn it off and go get everything I need to connect it (I'm at home, not my dorm where I normally have it connected) and when I turn it back on, red-ring. I waited like two minutes and tried again and it worked.

It's weird because I haven't had one problem with it, no disc-read errors and freezes or anything. Dammit. I wonder how much longer it will work or if I should just call Microsoft now. Hopefully it was a one-time thing, but I think that's unlikely.

Hey again everybody. Just a question for those of you that have recently gotten your system back from repairs.

My box arrived in McAllen, TX on the 18th. I was hoping to get the system back before Christmas, but I suppose it's not happening.

What's the amount of time it takes these days?

I have a launch Xbox 360. Worked fine, until today when I put in my brand new Assassin's Creed game. It played for about 20 minutes, then the Xbox said it was unplayable. Now it says every game is unplayable, including the new copy of Mass Effect I just got and my copy of Orange Box which I was playing last night. Can anyone pm me about these problems?

Yup. Mine ended up not playing my brand new out of the package version of CoD4 last month. I called around Nov 23rd, received, sent back, and received the box again within about 3 weeks, it was the quickest they have sent me back my Xbox (this was my second time).

This new one is quiet is a mouse. However no HDMI ports and it is a 2006 manufactured machine, I wanted a new one :(

Even Elite models suffer from DRE's?

Just cannot believe how crap the 360 has been built. If its not ring of death its DREs problems.

Current one keeps throwing out DREs but doesnt seem to red ring on me.

Starting to wish that MS would offer a refund option when you send in a 360.

Sent mine in last Friday...Was getting DREs and the drive was tearing up Mass Effect. I gave them hell on the phone, and I plan on doing the same *if* (or should I say when) they send me a second hand refurb that will go down the same path. I will be demanding a voucher to get a new premium / elite.

Has anyone had any experience with a bad controller? My controller is starting to go bad, and my console is still under warranty (out of warranty at the place I bought it), so I was wondering if I could get Micrsoft to repair my controller or if it falls outside of the warranty.

That was one of the worst podcasts I've ever listened too. No wonder I never heard of it before this post.

It's not a podcast, it's a daily radio show that is saved as an archive. What you heard was a xmas show. Thousands of people enjoy it, but it's not for everyone.

I had the same thing happen a couple of days after I got my previously fucked 360 back from MS. Initially, however, after the RRoD I phoned them wearily for another repair....they also offered me a free wireless controller, which of course I acceptable.

However, I tried the 360 again later and it was fine. I phoned MS back and notified them, they said they'd send out another power brick as a precaution - They did (and it's slightly smaller and the cable is slightly more flexible than the old one, interestingly....) but I also still got the shipping labels - despite the repair being cancelled - and my wireless controller. :D

I just got the E74 error. I need to force my 360 to get the three red rings. Is wrapping it in towels and leaving it on the standard procedure? How long should I leave my Xbox on at a time while cooking it?

Just tell em that it gets th e3 red lights randomly but not all the time when you call. They'll still wanna take it back because they know its gonna break. Been working great for people on other forums.

I wish I was making this up.

First week of December, my launch 360 RROD'ed (I posted as such earlier in the thread). Got my coffin, shipped it out, last I heard the repair center just received it last week and hopefully a new one is hurtling its way towards me.

It's a good thing, because over the weekend my wife's (aka "my backup") 360 started spitting out DREs on Rock Band, which carried over into Bioshock's music skipping, and Assassin's Creed takes several minutes to load (and makes horrendous noises while doing so).

Ironically it was Rock Band that was in the DVD drive when my 360 RROD'ed, and also started the DVD-ROM death spiral on the other one.

What are you trying to tell me, videogame gods. I'M NOT A REAL CASUAL! HONEST!
:D

EDIT: Because I know someone will ask, the bad DVD-ROM is a Samsung. The Hitachi on my launch box was loud, but never gave me any issues.

I called them last night and told them that I've been getting the three red rings. So when they get it to their repair center, plug it in, and see the E74 error I should be safe? I don't want to receive a call from Microsoft later saying I owe them $100 because my problem was not covered under warranty.

They don't have time to plug all of them in. They check the case to make sure theres no signs that it's been opened, toss it in a pile, take a refurb from another pile and box it up to send to you.

I hear so many stories about how people say that their replacement refurbs from MS dont last that long. With some saying that they stop working mere hours after getting them.

Any truth in that?

Well I'm on replacement # 6 or 7 from MS.. I'm just gonna go buy a new falcon arcade one tonight or tomorrow.

Repair number: Second

Reason for repair:
Scratched my copy of NHL08. (DVD-drive ran aggressively and loudly)
Date sent out: 12/17/2007
Date given back to me: 12/27/07
Manufacture Date of console given back to me: 12/10/2007

I just got mine back.
It smells brand new, with even plastic stickers protecting the faceplate. The disc drive is a Hitachi, which doesn't bother me since my launch system's disc drive was perfect and it was a Hitachi.

As new as the MFT Date is, there is no HDMI port. How can I tell which chipset I have?

Stick another 2 on the list, mine died a few months back, havnt touched it since return and my brothers died yesterday, got him Halo 3 for Christmas and said "Bet this kills your X Box" put it in, massive display issues, little rectangles everywhere then RROD :lol

For the last two days I have been completely unable to log in to Xbox Live. Well, I will log in, but then the first three blades just show an icon of the 360 with dots rotating around it for an hour or so until I get frustrated and turn it off. Is this just Live taking a major hit for the holidays, or symptoms of a red ring to come?
