"My Xbox 360 Died and I Lived to tell the story" Official Thread

Oh bugger, my April ’06 360 has just bitten the dust. No warnings - played it the night before and all was fine. Switched it on the next day and got the 3 rings blinking at me.

FECK! Reading the horror stories of crappy refurbs being returned is putting me off sending it in.

Just in time for Christmas too…..

I am tempted to just buy a new one but why should I? Also, if I spend out and get another 360 the chances of getting a PS3 anytime next year are pretty much zero.

AAAAARGH! BOLLOCKS.

/end rant

Just thought I would update my situation….

I’ve quoted my original post for the sake of irony. I got my 360 back last week and guess what…. It’s dead again. One fucking week and it’s dead – FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!

Why? WHY???

I would like to mention that I got a very polite Canadian guy on the helpline (I was quite surprised as I was calling from England) and he offered me a choice of 1of 7 games or accessories for my troubles. So I went for a wirelesss joypad.

On a side note - I ended up spending my Christmas bonus on a PS3 (which didn’t impress the wife). I had fun with Uncharted, Motorstorm and Heavenly Sword. But it’s not the same, I just couldn’t get into Resistance, I don’t know if it’s the joypad or maybe I am FPS’d out.

Oh well, I guess it’s time to give Resistance another chance….

Hey MS... I know you have people here reading the threads. If you sort nothing else out, SORT OUT YOUR DAMN REFURBS! (and give a new machine to anyone that has had more than 1 machine die on them)

I seriously am beginning to think you have power issues in your house/dorm/apartment. That, or you have your systems sitting on a wine cooler. 5 X360's and 2 PS3's!!!

I'm actually quite happy with my 12/11/07 build date refurb. It's shockingly quiet compared to the 11/22/05 model it replaced.

I thought I was having disc drive issues with it at first, but it turns out it was just a small imperfection in my Assassin's Creed disc that was making the noise.

I'm now buying content on it, so it had better live forever. :D

are you using a nyko intercooler or what?!? surge protector? overloaded powerpoints? etc

5 360s, 2 ps3s, something IS wrong with your setup

drive noise is very dependant on the quality of dvd media, stuntman ignition is a noisy game for example

Funnily enough, I asked him if I could just have a new console instead of a refurb because I had heard stories that people keep having to return their refurbs.

He kinda sighed and said not to believe the stories in the media/net. I told him I took such stories with a pinch of salt, until now.

To cut the guys long reply short the answer is no. He would only go as far as saying if it is beyond repair they would send a “replacement”.

This struck me as strange because whilst I am in the uk, I thought he was clearly in America/Canada as I could hear other people in the background with the same accent. So I assumed it was the other way around - MS US giving away the free stuff!!

The stats from this thread show refurb failure is a major issue.

How long does it take MS to send the coffin usually??? I made the call last wednesday and I still haven't gotten this shit.

Call 'em back. They may have ignored you like they did me. I had to put in the order twice until I finally got my coffin. For myself, I'm on the stretch run. MS got my 360 last Wednesday so I'm hoping to have my replacement soon.

Took 72 hours to get my coffin, just shipped mine out today. Hopefully I did not make a huge mistake as my DRE situation was just annoying but not all the time(just getting more frequent).
Let's see what lemon I receive.

When my first one died I registered it online, they emailed me a prepaid UPS label. I called UPS and they collected the same day. I did have to provide my own packaging though (luckily I had the original box so I just sent it in that and stuffed a load of newspaper in it to stop it rattling around).

Well, I think mine realized that I owned a PS3 for three days and got jealous (or it didn't like all the Wii I was playing).

It's clearly on its way out (crappy webcam pic... couldn't be bothered to find a real camera):

I've seen a lot of checkerboards, but not this.... anyone encountered this? Clearly it's a hardware failure in progress... just curious if anyone else has had it...

I'm getting a similar artifact - but it's a vertical blue effect on the left of the screen. It's most noticeable when you get a blade on the left by pressing the guide button. Been doing it for a few weeks on and off.

I think we're all heading to the same place...

Damn Bildi, another one? Guess I shouldn't be suprised.

Yeah, hopefully this will be the last one. I've been really hoping for 3 red lights so I get the extended warranty. If it dies without 3RLD that I'll lie and say it gets 3RLD - I'm sure they get lots that only do it intermittently.

I dunno, it's been limping along like this for a few weeks, so maybe it'll just keep going. :lol

Fuck!!!! I hope I get another native english speaker on the line. Oh well, MGS3, Zelda PH, and Okami should be able to tide me over. I better get this shit back before dmc4 comes out though.

That's exactly what my returned 360 did, I shut it down and rebooted but only got a black screen (no red ring though).

A serious question: how can so many of you put up with these failures? I mean I would simply bail on the system altogether if I had to deal with more than one failure, let alone some of the figures you guys are throwing out there.

Simple, we have a ton of money invested in games and peripherals. Selling it all and taking a huge hit only to turn around and buy a new system/peripherals/games at retail prices would be extreme financial stupidity.

We will get our revenge with the next console generation. Don't worry. :D

This has been asked so many times it's just getting tired now.

Obviously people really like the system and are willing to "put up" with this. There is a replacement plan in place where it does not cost any money to replace the system. Why wouldn't people take advantage of that.

You suggest they throw an in warranty machine in the trash or something? Perhaps sell all of their games and the repaired console for a massive loss instead?

They put up with it because the only thing it loses them is time. I'd imagine it would be a different story if everyone had to pay for repairs (and even then it would be worth it to some).

heh, my 2nd one just died after I tried to play the Turok demo. Hope I can get it replaced. Outside of the extended RROD warranty, the normal one has expired for me I believe. I've been messing with it since I'm bored, and noticed the thing doesn't always show the 3 flashing red lights when I turn it on. Sometimes it won't show any ring of lights at all(green or red). Other times it will start up and go to the dashboard and freeze, or freeze when I try and boot up a game. Then once it displayed this jibberish message or some crap with 2 flashing red lights. Right now it's back to the usual RROD though. I'm just worried that when it gets there it's going to act like it wants to work for a min, or show some other problem outside of the usual RROD, and they will say "oh no you don't" and send it back unrepaired. Should be fun:lol

Just tell them you have the RRoD, do they even check? My understanding is they will just send out a replacement as soon as yours arrives, at least in Canada anyways.

Before the 3 year warranty went into effect you had idiots that continued to buy the console after it took a dump on them. Do a search and you'll see.

Yeah, I pretty much think that everyone this happens to would be much better off selling all of their games and the repaired console.

Time is far more valuable than money -- you can always make more money, but you sure as hell aren't going to make any more time.

As did people when their PS2s stopped reading discs (or paid to have it fixed). Like I said in my post, some still will go out and buy another one / pay for repairs because they feel it's worth it to them.

That's your opinion, but I don't see it as much of a loss to take an hour to throw the machine in a box and post it.

No idea, but when my first one died it stayed at the repair center for like 2 weeks or so before they sent me a replacement. Anyway, I told them it RROD and they said they would send the box out today.

Are you really going to disregard the sometimes week-plus time the box takes to get there? Or the time the machine is gone?

:lol

Yes, because you've lost none of that time. Unless you were talking about time that you can't game... in which case where did the "time is more valuable than money" thing come into it from? You could always do something else.

Uh... what? You've lost all of that time. We're talking from a purely gaming perspective here -- you're trying to veer off course and completely change the direction of the conversation because of my reference to time being important. I'm not going to play that game with you.

If you buy a game console, you buy it to play games on it. If you spend weeks waiting on it to be repaired, you're spending weeks without your game console. That is lost time. There's no arguing that.

Unless you are totally batshit insane. In which case, yeah, I guess you didn't lose any time at all.

Wasn't trying to veer off on anything - Simply trying to clarify what you meant. If time is more important to people then I suppose it explains why people do go out and buy another one while their console is off for repairs.

I never would, but then all I need to do if I ever have a problem with my 360 is go back to the shop and get a new one.

Maloney said:

Yeah, turned the bastard on today, no picture... sonofabitch. Now the question is how to make a red ring happen.

EDIT: Resurrected it (for now) with the towel trick. Had glitches for a while, and then after it'd been playing for about 15 minutes, everything went "normal." I'd worry about frying its innards with the towel, but these video glitches tell me it's already kinda going south on that front... plus, if I'm going to have to pay for a repair/refurbished unit, my system may as well be totally dead before I get to that point.

so my rrod 360 arrived in mcallen texas hell this morning. how soon will my status change from waiting for device at service center to device received at service center?

i understand that it will be 2 days processing once the status changes and shipped soon after but it really sucks knowing its there and probably just sitting with a pile of other broke 360s not doing anything. :(

Sickboy, that appears to be a GPU failing. That is exactly what mine did, but it was orange instead of blue.

ManDudeChild, "how do we put up with it"... well I've only had one die so far... my refurb is rather suspect right now and it's only a matter of time before it gags.
The dying consoles, overbearing DRM, and shoddy service have grown old for me.
I'm not going to dump my 360 and it's collection, but seeing as how 3rd parties seem to be getting better about the PS3 ports, I'm just going to start buying all my multi-platform games on it. I will not be buying anymore XBLA content or accessories. I used to average buying a game or two every 6-8 weeks, now I might buy one 360 title per quarter if that.
in the grand scheme of things MS won't care, but I can't be the only person beginning to take this path...

I've enjoyed my 360 a great deal (along with some great frustration mind you), but it has become a small portion of my gaming budget now... and when the next round of consoles come around, I will certainly steer clear of Microsoft's offering until the hardware has had time to prove itself and possibly undergo a revision or two.

Got my fourth fricken 360 in from Microsoft. This refurb is even hotter and louder than the last, but you know, as long as it works I don't even care anymore. This is where Microsoft has set my standards. Why must such a horribly, horribly designed piece of hardware be blessed with such great games?

Well, no sooner than I went bragging about my great launch 360...

RRoD1.jpg

And I was just starting to get really good at Guitar Hero too :(

This is the first console that I've had go bad on me since my original Atari 2600 - I'm not making that up.

sorry if its been asked and im sure it has a zillion times but i couldnt find the answer seaching thru a zillion pages for this thread lol.

My question is this.. is it a KNOWN FACT that all repaired 360's returned to the owner have the extra heatsink and the 65nm cpu? Or what ever the new falcons carry under the hood.. do all repaired 360's have all these updated components? Just curious.. i have sent off my 360 to ms last week.. im prepaired to wait a month because i just got a new pc and crysis eye candy has me in awe at the moment.

Wow, I'm trying to be cool about this but this is just un-fucking-believable

I just called MS 360 support and spoke with two different customer reps who told me that they can't process my repair right now because they're having problems with their system:lol

No shit, so am I!!!

They're advice was to call back in 2-4 hours. This is like a Penny-Arcade comic gone horribly wrong.

On the bright side my decision about which console to buy DMC4 for just got a shit ton easier :P

No, you'd be lucky to get a 65nm cpu. Very lucky. Don't expect one.

I haven't visually checked mine, but considering how hot it gets, I'd say there's still some half-ass refurbs sneaking out there.

Agreed - I can't believe they'd send out 65nm boxes when they most likely have gigantic mountains of 90nm refurbs ready to ship out.

I think everyone is getting the heatsink though which is probably the main thing.
