Mystery Science Theatre - list some good eps

...from any season and provide a reason why.

i really love single episode sci fi series, some genius is always contained within the mediocre. like the quite poor modern Outer Limits, the one with the hot boded chick from The Crow as a robotic fuck machine was my personal fav. due to me screaming at the tv for her to flash some boob.

imagine my face/surprise when i got some bush too!

but i digress....

Here's some Season 3 love!

0301 - Cave Dwellers
The only "cave dwellers" in the film appear in the opening credits and have no connection with the plot of the film, which involves hanggliding into a castle and the all-powerful Geometric Nucleus. It's one of the few films Joel and the bots show blatant disdain for.

0302 - Gamera
The debut of everyone's favorite fire-spewing turtle who is Friend to All Children!

0317 - Viking Women vs. The Sea Serpent (w/ The Home Economics Story)
This one's more for the skits than the movie; Joel has a sudden obsession with waffles that eventually consumes the entire crew of the SOL.

0319 - War of the Colossal Beast (w/ Mr. B. Natural)
This one has the best short ever on MST3K... an androgynous fairy who teaches children the joy of music.

0321 - Santa Claus Conquers the Martians
This episode is my all-time favorite Christmas show. I watch it every year. The film is much goofier and easier to riff on than the other Santa Claus, which was just bizarre in a French-circus kind of way.

0322 - Master Ninja
MASTER NINJA THEME SONG! Wakachika wakachika wakachika wakachika...

How much keefe is in that movie, anyway?

Mitchell
Space Mutiny (my favorite)
Time Chasers
Hobgoblins
Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster
Godzilla vs. Megalon
Eegah
Legend of Bogey Creek II
Manos: Hands of Fate
Prince of Space
...

I'll think of more. Those are the cream of the crop (from what I've seen).

Mitchell is undeniably a classic, perhaps my favorite MST3K episode ever. "Hey, wasn't John Saxon in this movie?"

One brilliant episode that has yet to be mention is Pod People. There are dozens of hilarious quotes from that episode not to mention the movie is amusing outside of MST3K commentary.

And in case anyone didn't get the memo ...

Joel > Mike

"Pumaman" from season 9. Greatest superhero movie ever, my friend.
Totally. I'm in love with Pumaman. The movie, not the man.

Pod People. Probably because it was the first MST3K episode I saw so it was special, but it's a decent movies.

Time Chasers. I'm a time travel whore anyway, so I appreciated the goofy way they didn't worry about messing up time until it went bad, and then there were doubles and... I don't remember which of the MST3K guys it was said "So history is pretty much circling the drain at this point?"

Overdrawn at the Memory Bank. Raul Julia acting so silly in a PBS movie. :lol

Future War. Van Damme-lite versus robots and dinosaurs. Also it makes The Matrix Reloaded funnier.

Squirm. Electricity makes worms go crazy in the deep south. And is there a more classic recurring theme in all media than semi-retarded Southerner (Roger) versus pale north-eastern wimp (Mick) ?

Hobgoblins. I like the fact that this 80s movie doesn't take itself too seriously... but is still very bad at doing so. It's like Gremlins gone wrong.

My list is certainly Sci-Fi Channel heavy, but by the time we got satellite TV MST3K's run on Comedy Central was almost through.

Hamlet's good for one line, and one line only. But it's delivered so brilliantly that it's worth watching.

"Oh, who died and made you king?"

I'm suprised no one has mentioned the Digital Archive Project yet.

http://dapcentral.org/

They use eDonkey which is kind of archaic but it helps them keep everything fairly legit. If an episode gets listed as up for release they pull it from their master list of episodes you can nab off of their server. I've caught up with alot of the older episodes this way. The other nice thing is that they rate the content and the quality of the encoding. Considering alot of these were simple VHS tapes that had probably been used multiple times the quality can sometimes leave alot to be desired.

I realize this is kind of in the grey area of copyright laws, but consdering that we will most likely never see a full release of all MST3k episodes, and given the fact that they pull the listing as soon as they hear about an upcoming DVD containing it, I feel that it probably passes GAF's legal litmus test. If this isn't the case, feel free to edit my post or let me know and I will drop the link as well.

I'll just rubberstamp what impirius said for the waffles song if nothing else. season 3 is when I went girly for MST3K.

cornjob was to blame :(

I watched Space Mutiny last night and thought it was pretty fun. Did they really just steal all their effects shots from Battlestar Galactica?

Yeah, me too. I also wondered why Mike and the Bots never mentioned any of the Battlestar Galactica theft during the episode.

This Island Earth (MST3K the movie)
Jack Frost (Season 8)
Prince of Space (season 8)
Overdrawn at the Memory Bank (season 8)
MItchell (season 5)

Pod People was a French-Canadian production, and is MST3K's best episode.

Kid: "That's enough for now, we'll save the rest for later."
Servo: "No, more."
Kid: "Let's play now."
Servo: "Like hell, more food."
Kid: "Do you know what playing is, Trumpy? What do you know?"
Servo: "Food, eating, the theatre."

I thought the line from Podpeople went like this.

Super annoying kid: Do you know what playing is Trumpy?
Crow (with british accent): Yes, it's when I break you in half.

:lol :lol :lol

That comes earlier. Another great line in a show full of them.

Joel: "Now this guy has Renaissance Festival written all over him."
All three: "HUZZAH!"

This is from their web site episode writeup, now hosted at mst3kinfo.com.

We got a lot of Internet comment on how we didn't joke about how this movie used the Battlestar Galactica ship for the exteriors, and I have to admit, in retrospect we didn't joke about that at all. To quote the jury foreman at the end of The Producers: of this charge we are, in fact, incredibly guilty. -- Paul Chaplin.

Who can forget the brilliant song performed by Joel and the bots in Pod People?

"Sack of monkeys in my pocket. My sister's ready to go."

Also, I was curious as to what the "Chief?" and "McCloud!" sayings were from. Whatever it's a reference to I crack up everytime they do it in that episode.

Which episode has the huge spider and the guys kept yelling "PACKERS WOOOO PACKERS!!" everytime there was a big group of people?

Jack Frost is the funniest one I have ever seen. The movie itself is pretty bizarre and just opens itself up for some hilarious riffing.

Mr. B. Natural fucking rules...

I want to see this one called SANTA! again. I remember it being absolutely hilarious back in the day and never saw it in repeat. I will have to check the DAP!!!

Prince of Space/Space Chief
Prince of Space I still enjoy. But Invasion of the Neptune Men (with Space Chief)... well, it's like Prince of Space, minus the silliness of Krankor and his chicken men, plus repetitive aerial fight footage. I almost can't bear the last third or so.

Yeah, Mike and Crow actually LEAVE THE THEATER during all the stock footage because they can't stand the movie.
Or at least they try to, they come back shortly because there's no oxygen in the rest of the satellite. :lol

Another nothing movie - The Starfighters.
"I think we're at the point where something's got to happen."

Manos really is only for fans of the show - on it's own as a movie, it is pretty wretched. Although I get a kick out the episodes where the bots start crying about the movie - Manos, Monster a Go-Go, Castle of Fu-Manchu - ouch, those were hurting.

They were on Cheap Seats a couple months ago.

And Mike Nelson still regularly records MST3K-style audio commentaries for classic films on DVD (Night of the Living Dead, Reefer Madness, Carnival of Souls).

I don't think they would be opposed to starting up the show again, but their format makes them difficult to syndicate, and difficult to get people to commit 2 hours to. Not sure if any networks would really be interested.

Yeah, in the era of cheap reality TV, a show like MST3K would be too tough to greenlight. Too bad, because terrible movies worthy of the MST3K treatment are still being made to this day.

MASTER NINJA THEME SONG

I love the Patton sketch in that.

Yeah, the stupid thing is, they weren't exactly expensive to shoot; a MST3K eppy often was a week from first viewing to in the can. The 2 hour format and the need for watchers to think during the watching probably dooms a comeback, though.

And for the OP:

Mitchell

John Saxon: "How do you like your scotch, Mr. Mitchell?"
Crow: "Er, by the quart."

Godzilla vs. Megalon, (complete with drill-hand bug dude and Ultraman rip-off)

Crow: "He's got a tree! He's got a tree! That's not the Godzilla we know!"

Best sketch ever, although it's long, mean-spirited, and kind of archaic cuz Orville Redenbacher is deceased.

Operation Double 007

Sean Connery's brother Neil, along with Adolfo Celli, Moneypenny, and Q all trade career-threatening time before a camera for moneyhats full of lira in this Italian rip-off of Bond.

Buxom bimbo spy: "Your eyes are beatiful."

Neil: "You really think so?"

Crow: "Can I have one?"

Hercules vs. The Moon Men

Alan Steele + "enhanced" Greek myth + DEEP HURTING + a Wishbone Ash reference = Good times.

Deathstalker 3

FILMED...on location in BEAUTIFUL Hidalgo, Mexico, you watch a smarmy loser in sweatpa...er, "tights" annoy everyone with 2 X chromosomes in the film. "You're a keen judge of men, Deathstalker"

I think if they shortened the show to an hour and just did shorts instead of movies, that a comeback might be viable. While on average the shorts were funnier (but never as funny as the best movies), taking the bad films out would really make the show lose a bit of its soul. They had a pretty good run anyhow....200+ episodes is more than enough to keep people satisfied.

The show is definitely cheap enough for a cable revival.....some place like SpikeTV or MTV2 would be good places to pitch it to, given their penchant for the absurd and postmodern (Most Extreme Challenge and Wonder Showzen).

I'm watching Pod People right now and I'm dying to know this too! Funny how references you don't even get can still be funny.
