N.Y. senator proposes bill to pay college athletes

I am not sure how this would actually work. So the Football team brings in big money, but the womens volleyball team is a money loser. Yet the volleyball player will get the same as the star QB?

I think selling likeness etc and endorsments are good in theory, but that opens the game up to lots of fuckery.

I also think there is a lot of misconception because some Football and Basketball programs are big money earners. So its thought that every school and every sports program is brining in billions too, but in reality most are money losers.

These student atheletes do get a raw deal and the schools make bank of their backs, but its also IMO not as straight forward. Though I am sure there are people who follow NCAA more than me that could maybe explain things either pro or con better.

When did politicians from NY lose all their common sense and integrity? Allowing endorsements --> no brainer. Mandating that the athletes get a slice of what they generate --> fine if that's what the people want. But calling it equitable to give the field hockey team a share of the football and basketball teams' revenue --> utter hogwash. That's not equity. That is socialist political activism rubbing the word equity in shit.

Maybe OP has misunderstood the bill. The 15% profits share will act as a basic annual income to play for your college but that's not where these students will earn their money.

That comes from selling their image rights and doing brand deals. The 15% of ticket sales will be a drop in the ocean compared to what allot of these pre all star athletes will be making.

I'm actually against this stuff for college athletetics. I think it has to stay amateur. Yeah they'll make money off the students. They're also in a lot of cases paying the tuition for the students. I'm for increasing money to athletic scholarship programs across the board. But we can't blur the line between amateur and professional sports. I like what Tebow had to say about it. I don't want college ball to become NFL.

There is a straight forward solution: Get rid of college athletics.

The bigger sports should spin off from the schools and start a private minor league system akin to baseball’s minor leagues. This way not only would they get paid way more than any college could afford to pay them, they can focus on what they went to college for in the first place- a shot at the majors.

Counter-argument 1: “But muh education.” If they’re a good athlete they can make enough money to get their education in the off season. Many pro athletes leave college early and go pro, just to return and get their degree later. There’s already a trend of this happening.

Counter-argument #2: “But, muh booster money.” So what your athletic department brings money into the school. You think that makes you special? You think that money couldn’t be brought in some other way?

As Paul Ryan said, “Money is fungible.” Thank you Paul for that fun scrabble word, because it drives home the point that the money athletics bring in would not suddenly disappear. There are always ways and will always be new ways to bring money in.

Counter-argument #3: “But, muh underwater, esports, la crosse polo sport!” Look you want to keep playing an underpopular sport, start an intramural league on campus that meets after class for fun. But, stop pretending your school would miss your little niche hobby if it were gone. They would not.

Counter-argument #4: “But, muh sports scholarships!” Maybe instead of getting into college on the skin of your teeth and then taking the easiest classes imaginable, you spend your high school years studying and working (to save for said college).

We take sports waaaaaay too seriously in America. It’s not a metaphor for life. Its not even art. It’s entertainment. And that’s all it is.

If you want people to take college education seriously, then stop spending so much time and money on sideshow attractions that have nothing in common with the school it leeches off.

We know eventually where this goes.

Female athletes playing Volleyball or curling see that the star QB is getting 100K for shoe endorsments, 250K for car endorsements, etc... and now all of a sudden the NCAA is sexist and misogynist and there needs to be equal pay.

And I am sure that big colleges already have advantages, but this will basically make it that only the biggest get the best players because thats where the money will be. And then you are asking 18/19 year olds to not get involved in any fuckeries (hey here is 100K for you "likeness" how about you miss the last basket of the game ok?)

Why not just get rid of the Student part of student athelete. Still have the sports but the kids don't go to the schools they just play for the team. If they wanted they could attend the school but they would pay their way no scholorships. If they don't care they can just be atheletes and get paid.

they should be paid on retainer, enough that they don't have to worry about life outside the sport or classroom

i played college football for a year and it was a miserable experience

I basically said the same thing. I’m glad someone agrees. There’s bound to be dozens of us. DOZENS!

There's zero chance that the NFL gives up it's essentially "free" farm system. The NFL draft eligibility rules are specifically designed for it to be that.

People don't make that big of a deal about NCAA basketball players not getting paid because they only have to do one year and then they can enter the NBA draft. Plus the NBA actually has development leagues as an alternative.

It's NCAA football and the NFL that are the huge problems. I honestly don't think this would be that big of a deal if it wasn't for NCAA men's football.

I agree that college athletics has grown into this huge monster that it was never originally intended to be and should maybe be separated from academics with some sports.

You're right about football being the worst. It was also the first. It was the first to grow from intramural sports between Ivy League schools into a professional sport. It got started on the college campus. Same with basketball. You don't see this issue with baseball or soccer or golf despite their popularity because they did not get their start on college campuses.

Yeah and there's a lot of factors that play into controversy with NCAA football as well. Coaches salaries being a big one, the majority of coaches in Division 1 schools are making over $3 million a year plus easily, even for schools that aren't really known for the football programs.

The jump in pay is huge considering that most division 1 coaches were only making around $500k a year if that in the mid 00's. Just for example Kentucky went from paying Rich Brooks $195k a year in 2006 to paying Mark Stoops $4 million a year in 2018. That's nearly a 2000% pay increase in over a decade and the trend has continued all over the NCAA.

Illinois went from paying Ron Cook $500k a year in 06' to paying Lovie Smith $5 million a year in 2018.

In Soutch Carolina Steve Spurrier was getting paid $256k a year in 06', in 2018 Will Muschamp made $4.2 million.

You look all over with every single team in NCAAF and it's the exact same thing. The pay increases are absolutely crazy for such a short time period. https://sports.usatoday.com/ncaa/salaries/
