Now keep in mind that "playable" means a lot of things...and the visuals on the current core make it feel like maybe you ate a handful of mushrooms before you sat down...but from a technical standpoint seeing the real time progress on pivoting the N64 to FPGA code is nothing short of spectacular
Everyone considered the 64 to be the "impossible console" on MiSTer. People thought there was no way to fit the entirety of the silicon of Nintendo's last cart based console in the logic element quantity of the Terasic DE10 Nano...but it seems like its truly possible after all as the core has gone from "hello world" to playing some fan made games to now booting in game to multiple retail titles. Sure there is still a lot to go with the developer FPGAZumSpass finishing up work on the Reality Display Processor or RDP...but the work is progressing and you can now play some very seriously weird looking sessions of Super Mario 64 or Star Fox 64.
Playable enough that we've been challenging ourselves to see who can get furthest into Super Mario 64 currently.
But if you have a MiSTer...start checking it out! It's worth testing and if you are on the MiSTer Discord we share progress, etc etc.
But GAF...who on here is looking forward to N64 on MiSTer FPGA? and who owns a MiSTer? if you dont...run, dont walk...and build one!
