Namco vs Capcom (SLG / Monolith)

It's a turn based strategy RPG. When you attack enemies the screen switched to a 2D sideview animation like Fire Emblem and Super Robot Wars, the only difference is that it seems you can string combos and special attacks while in the battle animation screen by following prompts at the bottom of the screen like Zell's specials in FF8. Otherwise it's just a turn-based strategy game like Disgaea, FFT, whatever.

Ta duck! :)

Ah, so I was a bit off after-all. Thanks for the info, duckroll. :)

As for the "quest" portion, Folder, I don't know how in-depth that aspect could possibly get considering the concept of the game... but then again, they must have picked Monolith Software for a reason. ;)

Let's hope so! :)
Though one can only imagine what the plot might be... Any thoughts? Wonder if it will be videogame related or (as it's bound to be - never mind) a quest to defeat a dark force that threatens to take over the world. Would be good if it was a Sega Gaga-a-like. Development meetings with Ryu and Vega, plotting the downfall of the evil Namco empire!

Wow, nice to see Monolith Soft finally make a game that might sell well. I was getting a little worried about them surviving if they didn't have a real hit soon.

And note to Capcom & Namco: MERGE!

I dunno, I don't really see this thing as a sure hit necessarily. SRW sells because it appeals to people who were fans of mecha shows while growing up during the 70s-present day.

This appeals to Capcom fans (do they exist? I mean everything Capcom bombs in Japan lately) and Namco fans (well there are Tales fans and then there Tekken/SC fans). Capcom has built it's fanbase on action games, and Namco is about 50/50. Not really sure what the turnout will be for a simulation rpg.

Also XS still sells a lot of copies despite not turning profit. This may turn more profit but I doubt it will sell as many copies as XSep2 did.

Capcom's fighting crossovers all sold pretty well in Japan (CVS2 across DC/PS2 almost hit 500k). Not saying it's the exact same audience or anything, but this seems rather high profile and will probably attract more interest than Monolith's usual Square knock-offs. Not to mention it's western potential.

I bet it sells 300k at least (which is 50k more than Xenosaga 2).

on the other hand, i think it has way less western potential than xenosaga, because of the crappy 2D SD graphics and general weird vibe, especially with SRW being a nonentity over here (whether this game will appeal to SRW fans or not, it's immediately *understandable* as being an SRW clone to japanese.)

still, i'd like to see it come here.

The more we talk about sales the more jaded and bitter we're going to get. :(

Looks fun? check
Looks cute? check
Looks crazy? check

Count me in! :D

Awesome looking game. This jumps right up to the top of my most anticipated list. Ah, Arthur and Strider Hiryu in the same game. I pray for a US release.

It's also possible this may never leave Japan.

I don't think that's a problem. SRW games never come over because of all the licensing issues which hopefully shouldn't exist for this game. Then all that's going against it is the 2d and possibly massive amounts of translation text. But since it features characters from many high selling franchises in the west, I think that will be enough to get it over.

Heh, where did this come from? The premise sounds cool, but for looks I'm underwhelmed. This is a PS2 game? Maybe we need bigger pics because the backgrounds don't look that great and the characters are just 2D sprites. I hope this game does come over as this is an interesting premise on the strategy genre.

Yeah, the jury is still out on this one for me. Hasn't Monolith's games been pretty bad? Just having cool characters don't mean jack if they're not handled right. Plus, I never though this way, but I really am sick of anything Capcom vs.

Though it's nice to see Regina being used again.

Agreed, the game looks totally fun. Hopefully they've got Rockman.EXE, Mr Driller and Joe hidden in there somewhere. :)

Also, this game would be perfect for DS and PSP!

I hope Reiko's in this one too. She could have nutty special attacks like calling cars from Ridge Racer games to run over enemies. :D :D

I really don't see much chance of this not coming to the US.
Agreed. If Namco Hometek's willing to bring over stuff like Nighmare of Druaga, Tales of Symphonia, Katamari Damacy and Mr Driller DS, there's no way they'll pass on this.

MUST HAPPEN!!!!

I see Regina from DC in there, and is that Bruce from Resident Evil: Dead Aim?

Edit: doubled, but I'll use this to say I think that would be cool, Dead Aim was decent fun and Bruce is a rare character with a Southern accent, added variety to RE; and oh yeah, he probably got the best reward at the end of anybody in an RE game...;)

Looks cool. I may get it.

It just needs:

More Tales representation (something besides ToD?)
Viewtiful Joe
Katamari Damacy (either the prince+a katamari or the King of All Cosmos)
Maybe a character or two from Baten Kaitos

And I'm sold.

Who're the red-dressed pair in the first page? The blonde chick and the dude with black/white hair with the swords in one hand?

Where's Mega Man? Viewtiful Joe? Pac-Man?

Please come to the U.S.

Yes, as said above.

They're the main characters, original characters created for the game, like I already said above.

WHY DO PEOPLE JUST NOT READ ANY REPLIES AND ASK QUESTIONS WHICH HAVE ALREADY BEEN ANSWERED?

First of all, I kind of skipped your post because you posted the character information which was the same as somebody else who had already posted it before you.

Second, this is what you 'said' about it:

The lead characters are two original characters created just for this game.

How is that supposed to be informative? It would've been infinitely easier to just describe them.

I dunno, I thought it was obvious since they were both placed seperately on the first page of the article as opposed to being on "Capcom side" or "Namco side" segments. Guess not everyone thinks the same way. The article mentions it too but I guess most people can't read it. Oh well, will add more descriptions next time! :(

Obviously, its just to piss you off since you have all that time to read everything and we don't :D

Why no Rival Schools love? :(

New RPG: Namco X Capcom
Monolith's new strategy/RPG is overflowing with your favorite characters.
By Anoop Gantayat

January 26, 2005 - Did you have an unlikely dream last night of a Namco and Capcom crossover simulation RPG from the developer of Xenosaga? Well, guess what? Your dream has just come true!

Retail sources in Japan have let slip first news of a new game titled Namco X Capcom. Developed by Monolith, the same kids who brought the world Xenosaga and Baten Kaitos, this PS2 title mixes simulation and RPG elements with all your favorite Namco and Capcom characters.

The various parties involved are contributing talent to the project. Monolith's Morizumi Souichirou is taking the helm as director and scenario writer. Character illustrations are being handled by Soul Calibur's Takuji Kawano. The opening animation sequence is getting the attention of animation studio Production IG, the same group that works with Namco on its game animation.

Namco X Capcom takes place in the year 20XX as a strange time and space disruption called "Yurigi" suddenly appears throughout the world. Cities have been closed off under tight patrol. A special government organization called "Shinra," based in Tokyo's Roppongi district, has been formed to deal with the disruption. Serving in this organization are the main characters, Shaomu and Reiji.

As part of their duty, Shaomu and Reiji head into Tokyo's Shibuya district. A massive disruption appears as they arrive, bringing Xenosaga's Shion, M.O.M.O., KOS-MOS and even the Gnosis enemies into the Reiji and Shaomu's world. The two main characters finds themselves fighting at the side of the Xenosaga heroines in a battle to defeat the Gnosis. But this is just the beginning as the disruption opens up new paths that allow Reiji and Shaomu to venture into various Capcom and Namco worlds. Will the two be able to figure out the mysteries behind the disruptions as they team up with classic game characters in this new ultimate crossover battle?

The use of the Namco and Capcom names should appropriately suggest one thing: lots of characters from the two companies' sizable character stables. From Namco, in addition to the Xenosaga characters, confirmed characters include Mitsurugi (Soul Calibur), Bravoman (classic TurboGrafx action game Bravoman), Jin (Tekken) and various characters from the Tales series of RPGs. Capcom will contribute Dimitri (Dark Stalkers), Morrigan (Dark Stalkers), Strider Hiryu (Strider), Arthur (Ghouls and Ghosts), Ryu (Street Fighter II), Chun Li (Street Fighter II), Regina Dino Crisis and Bruce McGavin (Gun Survivor 4).

Screenshots have revealed characters besides these. We've seen shots featuring M.Bison (Street Fighter), Klonoa (Klonoa), Cammy (Street Fighter) and Ken (Street Fighter. Who knows who else will make an appearance?

Gameplay is set up like a strategy title, resembling Bandai's Super Robot Taisen series at a glance. You take turns with the enemies moving your units, consisting of either single characters or pairs of characters, on a 3D overhead battle map. Attack an enemy unit and the game switches to a side view showing a battle scene. Using the D-pad and the circle button, you can make your characters perform moves. It's possible to combine character attacks for mega ultra super maniac moves.

Fans of Namco and Capcom games should love the battle antics of the characters. Characters perform their trademark moves in battle, with Ryu casting fireballs and Chun Li doing her speed kicks. Character artwork seems to be 2D, with big-headed versions of the characters used both in fight sequences and on the overhead map. Perform a super move, and the screen fills with gorgeous hand-drawn artwork featuring the characters in their normal proportions.

Between battles, the story progresses through still-frame dialogue sequences between your favorite characters. The dialogue sequences are voiced, with each character having their own voice actor.

Although the game was revealed for the first time today, development is already at 70% with a Japanese release, via Namco, set for May.

If it's a fun game, I'll import it, although I do agree this would've been so much better as a PSP game.

BTW, are any of the voice actors famous? (I assume the text under each character's name is the voice actor?).

Anyway, Mitsurugi, Klonoa and Jin in one game is awesome. And I'll just pretend Valkyrie is Cassandra with her 3P costume.

Phobos (the robot in Darkstalkers, can't remember the english name), Zeble (the werewolf). Also of note is that there are special attacks you can do when your special attack gauge is full, and there are also dual-techs where two characters can attack two enemies at the same time (shown is Dimitri and Morrigan laying the smackdown on Phobos and Zeble).

Eh? There is no Zeble in Darkstalkers. There's Zabel (Lord Raptor in the US), which is the headbanging zombie character (which seems to be who is pictured) The werefolf character is Gallon (Jon Talbain in the US) which is nowhere to be seen.

Sorry, I was completely confused. I meant Zabel the zombie! :( :(
