The argument began when @ISAFmedia, which generally provides dry updates in military speak of the security situation in Afghanistan, took exception to comments from a Taliban spokesman, tweeting: "Re: Taliban spox on #Kabul attack: the outcome is inevitable. Question is how much longer will terrorist put innocent Afghans in harm's way?"

The Taliban – who, when in power, eschewed most modern technology, including television and music players – decided to point the finger of blame back at the international forces for endangering Afghan civilians. Showing an affinity with textspeak, Taliban tweeter Abdulqahar Balk (@ABalkhi) wrote: "@ISAFmedia i dnt knw.u hve bn pttng thm n 'harm's way' fr da pst 10 yrs.Razd whole vllgs n mrkts.n stil hv da nrve to tlk bout 'harm's way'"

@ISAFmedia was moved to respond by providing statistical backing for its case. "Really, @abalkhi? Unama reported 80% of civilians causalities are caused by insurgent (your) activities http://goo.gl/FylwU"

But @ABalkhi questioned the value of the quoted statistics, pointing out in somewhat sarcastic tones that Isaf, an organisation established by the UN security council, was using figures from another UN body (the UN assistance mission in Afghanistan) to try to win the argument: "@ISAFmedia Unama is an entity of whom? mine or yours?"

more through the link.

Shame, Osama never used twitter. He could troll Obama
and be killed earlier

Even high-stakes political intrigue is ruined by fucking idiotic twitter-speak. I occasionally use Twitter, and it hasn't stopped me from typing like a human being.

Explains it kind of.

Here's hoping they can track back ABalkhi and tear him in pieces with a predator launched rocket. Harsh? Nah, he deserves it with that stupid sms/twitter-lingo..

Given that his message is 2 characters short of twitters limit, it seems to have been a necessary compromise to the limitations of the medium.

I take it back, I want to win the war in Afganistan now. Unconditional surrender or death.

I really truly hope screenshots of this argument will make their way into a history textbook one day.
Same. I don't know if this is a historic first of this kind but it's my first time seeing something like this. The Internet has dramatically changed the world.

Err, no, it's a bilingual keyboard.

Edit: this one, I've never seen a keyboard like the one you posted in my life.

Haha, I was kidding. The site arabic-keyboard.org loads the kyeboard in my picture for like an eighth of a second and then quickly loads the one in your picture.

Is it really necessary to include the @-sign every time in that article? That is very annoying.

For replies to the person, yes. @ tags the username for your reply on twitter in case they aren't there at the moment and check their @(name) tab.

"Taliban tweeter Abdulqahar Balk "

How do they know that he isn't just some troll?

I have a hard time to imagine some Taliban-dude sitting in Afghanistan or Pakistan and writing comments about the NATO.

"@ISAFmedia i dnt knw.u hve bn pttng thm n 'harm's way' fr da pst 10 yrs.Razd whole vllgs n mrkts.n stil hv da nrve to tlk bout 'harm's way'
When people type like this it gives me the impression that they survived a gunshot wound to the head.

I'm talking about the news article. There's no reason to have it there. First sentence of the article:

"The argument began when @ISAFmedia, which generally provides dry updates in military speak of the security situation in Afghanistan, took exception to comments from a Taliban spokesman, tweeting: "Re: Taliban spox on #Kabul attack: the outcome is inevitable. Question is how much longer will terrorist put innocent Afghans in harm's way?"

No one's being spoken to in that sentence. And they should leave it out when quoting a twitter post too. It's very annoying to read.

I hate the way people talk via twitter. Even a well versed person seems to just fall apart when using it. Its like the website just instantly turns them into Fantasia Barrino.

How often do you use twitter, and which feeds do you follow?
