I WOULD have to catch a fucking cold the day before a test. Damn Indiana weather.

I dislike taking medicine for sore throats and the like because they make me loopy and/or sleepy. There anything natural I can take to abate this?

Try gargling with hot water with salt. Just a guess, but about a teaspoon per cup of water, as hot as you can stand. Always works for me.

yeah drink some tea with a crap load of honey...it helps. You could also try gargling some salt water in the back of your throat.

always a person ahead of me - edit

I have a friend who swears gargling Listerine (not the less intense stuff) always works.

Zicam is the best cold remedy EVER! Miracle stuff. Shortens the cold's duration and lessens its effects during. I had a cold last Monday AM and by Wed night it was 95% done. I love that stuff. Its over the counter

You know, the listerine thing is the first thing I tried? And it kinda worked in cleaning out my throat but not in getting rid of the actual pain. I gotta get more medicine for the house though

$50/hour, but no kissing on the lips and colors must be pre-separated

That also seems to work when you've got alot of crud in your throat. Breaks that flem right outta there and makes for the most disgusting site ever when you spit it up. Disgusting, yes, but effective...

Salt water and Listerine are both effective. Listerine won't relieve pain, but will kill germs and bacteria that are causing the sore throat.
I also make myself a cup of hot tea+honey+brandy whenever i feel soreness in my throat.

Next time as soon as you feel soreness approaching make sure you load up on vitamins (C+B) and Zinc to reduce the severity of the infection.

Another vote for dissolved salt water.

I've heard this works. I had a pretty bad sore throat last week (the flu seems to be going around now) but I didn't have the chance to try this.

Tea with Honey or even better boil a few chunks of ginger and drink that with some honey in it (you can toss the ginger after you've had it boiling a while). It'll help your throat and kills any colds you may be getting.

Salt water makes wonders to sore throat. Be sure to oversalt it, should be so salty you can see grains of salt in the glass.

Have the flu shots started up again? It sucked to miss it last year

I'm pretty sure that's the only kind :p -- unless you empty an entire can of it into a glass of water, in which case I doubt you'd be able to drink it or even gargle with it. :p

Hot tea, hot water, hot chocolate, hot women...whatever. It'll all help.

Actually, whenever I or anyone else in my family have a red throat, the doctor says to avoid drinking liquids that are too hot or cold. So take that for what it's worth...

I'm not entirely sure if a "red throat" (i.e., inflamed tissue) is the same as a "sore throat"-- for instance, it might be different from a throat that became sore through too much screaming/singing or something, so perhaps the remedies and treatments are different.

I found taking drops of echinacea in a glass of water at the start of a cold helps keep the symptoms down. I'm just getting over a cold myself.
