Bah, the broadcasters usually remain the same so who cares much. I'm sure Madden & Michaels will stay on MNF.

I just don't get how ABC let that slip through their fingers, it's a sure ratings cash cow.

Yes. ABC lost the right for the Monday Night Football.
Now it will be produced at ESPN. After Superbowl XL, abc won't be doing any more of MNF.

for 35+ years, MNF used to be ABC's flagship sports premier, and losing it will be a big shock (even to me, although I mostly work with news division, but I do work with MNF all the time) - but I hear that NFL is charging enormous amount each year, and it's been said that MNF, while staying top place for monday nights, have been in red for past few years.

I just feel sorry for the people (especially PA's) who would lose their jobs because of that... :( Losing MNF would liquidate abc sports nearly in half or so. ESPN has their own crew who dealt with SNF before, so I guess it would be really hard for former ABC sports people could join them. Also, a lot of the productions will be done at ESPN for ABC sports, so... it could mean liquidation of a entire division.

After Lost, Desperate Housewives and Extreme Makeover HE, I thought my company was on re-bound - and this happens. :(

So border, yes, it's a terrible news for me. ;)

Terrible? What does it really matter in the first place?

Ratings drop... a HUGE ratings drop for ABC. Something you need to realize is that ABC is network television... ESPN is not (cable). Basically... they are going to be excluding a huge audience with this move. It's sad, too. I'm a bit nostalgic about it as well... but ABC just lost one of their 2 top 10 neilson ratings getters.

Doesn't Disney own both ABC and ESPN?

Couldn't they just show it on ABC instead?

I ask cause technically, ESPN has the NBA broadcast rights, but ESPN and NBA agreed to show some games and the Finals on ABC. If you look at the end of games, it says this game was brought to you by ESPN -_-

atleast Hannah Storm will be back!

edit: WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO MY DATELINE SUNDAY!?!??!?!?

So now you watch network primetime football on Sunday instead of Monday. From the viewer's perspective it's really not that different. I guess it might suck for people that actually like the current Sunday network lineup (though SNF has always competed with that anyhow).

I view the news as pretty much a neutral thing. The only way it would be good news is if Madden got shitcanned.

Hard to say whether or not ABC should have let it go, though. Even if it was running in the red it was an opportunity to plug plenty of other stuff on the network.....as hokey as it sounds when I have to listen to Al Michaels pretend to be excited about all the wacky things happening on this week's episode of the Jim Belushi Show.

ESPN is ABC in a way, both are owned by Disney.

I called this MONTHS ago.
The talk started early last year, IIRC. Even inside the company, it was just a rumor and not everyone was convinced that ABC would let go such big franchise... till now.

Anyhow, yes. Before Disney bought ABC, ESPN used to be owned by ABC. Now, since Disney owns both channels (not too sure about how exactly contract went through), so I'm not too sure whether ESPN could be considered our subsidary. While we work closely with ESPN and share a lot of resources too - but it is a separate company with separate crews and all.

but ABC owns ESPN, so how did they let the NFL slip away from them completely and go to NBC??

$$$, and being MNF in red for years due to license... really. MNF has been consistant rating raker for ABC for past 3 decades, but expenses were too high. The production value for each game is beyond belief. Good for revenues, but bad for booking, I guess...

man i wouldnt be surprised if ESPN gets its own programming tier because of this... dont some cable companies charge extra for MTV?

I remember this being discussed earlier. The main reason advanced was so that a network could pick a game to show closer to kickoff rather than having the schedule set months before the season. This became necessary because of parity and the fact that moribund teams starting winning all of a sudden with no warning. ABC was getting some shit matchups late in the season that nobody wanted to watch.

I'm all for a little change. I love the NFL, but watching MNF was getting harder to do because of the extreme amount of commercials. It was really ridiculous. You have to just turn it on in the background and do something else.

I was also under the impression (i.e. I heard it on some sports radio station) that ABC was losing money hand over fist with MNF and it was becoming too much of a "prestige" show, like the evening news.

goddamit, Griese!
so then madden and michaels make the switch to ESPN as well? then the three stooges from SNF are out of a job? wonder who NBC is gonna get

I was just talking to someone on sports, and just found out that we also lost some of the college football stuff too. This year will be our last Bowl Championship Series (so much for finding out the who's sponsoring Rosebowl this year fiasco!).

Whoa. It seems like we are really going out with a bang. Last season for MNF, BCS with no NFL coverage AT ALL.

Good going guys... I just feel sorry for my colleagues who would lose their jobs...
(very somber atmosphere here today.)

It either means Mike Patrick and Paul Maguire lose a job or John Madden does. I'm all for this change.

Maybe that's the reasoning. HBO makes a killing becuase everybody has to have it. Like a billion dollars. Cable prices keep going up and we keep getting fucked. ESPN can raise their prices and we end up paying $100+ for decent cable. And it sounds like Desperate Housewives Monday's to me.

I was about to mention EA knowing what they were doing when they got the NFL/ESPN license.....

damn them guys have the world on lock

HBO also doesn't get ad revenue from commercials. I don't know if ESPN will want to throw away valuable NFL commercial time.

It sure would be cool to get 1-2 games a week without commercials. Though the players might collapse from not having a long-ass break every 5 minutes.
