The show is too new and fresh to be resorting to these kind of cameos...and even if it was a cameo, he could've been better utilised to not be a caricture of himself. So yeah, it was all on purpose...but still... not that funny.

See, I definitely tend to agree with that. Now, I really like Jack Black, and I didn't necessarily mind that he purposefully sucked the funny out of that episode. The main problem I had was how much screen time he got and how the story sort of revolved around him.

Oh well, whatever.

Pretty sure the only reason anyone watched the first episode was because of Joel McHale. All the previews were beyond horrible.

I didn't even watch any of the previews, but I did watch Community from the beginning because of McHale.

It's really great to know that the show turned out as well as it did. Now let's just hope that it can keep on running like this.

As for this past episode, I'm actually surprised that not many people liked it. I'm very far from a Jack Black fan but I still found the episode as entertaining as any others so far.

The characters were still being developed, particulary the side characters not Jeff nor Britta. Abed was more energetic and almost hyper, in later episodes he's a lot more chilled.

Half the comedy is built on you learning the characters and their nuances and slowly getting better at recognizing the more subtle stuff they weave in under the big plot. It's way less fun if you don't start at the beginning.
