Searched and couldn't find a thread on this...
Nearly 50 per cent of all Japanese adults are not having sex, according to a study, dealing a new blow to government efforts to halt the sliding birth rate.

The report, conducted by the Japan Family Planning Association, determined that 49.3 per cent of the 3,000 people interviewed had not had sex in the previous month.

Of the men interviewed, 48.3 said they had not had sex for a month, while 50.1 per cent of women had abstained. Both figures were up about 5 percentage points from the previous study, conducted in 2012.

Asked why they were not having sex, 21.3 per cent of the married men claimed they were too fatigued after work while 15.7 per cent replied that they were no longer interested in sex after their wives gave birth.

Among the women, 23.8 per cent said sex was "bothersome" and 17.8 blamed being tired from work.

More than 20 per cent of men aged between 25 and 29 expressed little of in interest in sex.

The actual issue the opposite I believe, work & life stress are so high there that people lose there sex drive and or libido. At least in the big cities.

Being too tired from work is legit when you have a lot of people leaving the house at 7 or 8 a.m. to take a long ride in a train to make work before 9 a.m. and then only being able to leave the office at around 9 to 11 p.m. if you're lucky.

Could be, but at least to someone with a western sensibility (so taken with a giant salt lick)… isn't "I'm too tired" the usual BS excuse thrown out there in relationships, and isn't it almost always nonsense?

Is that supposed to be high? Seems like about what I'd expect, that means 50% of them are having sex. I assume the rest are just single

Normally whenever we have a thread about Japanese culture, there's usually more than a couple GAF'ers out there who respond with the "plane flying off into the sunset" pic. This may be one instance where a plane flying back might be appropriate.

Also, the "15.7 per cent replied that they were no longer interested in sex after their wives gave birth" are idiots.

Edit:

Yea, THAT. Someone flip that plane around.

No not always, when you work from 7am-11pm I wouldn't be shocked if I heard the words "I am to tired".

Just because they have different priorities doesn't mean they are idiots. Believe it or not some people don't like sex, or they don't have to have it every day/week/month to be able to survive.

Given my complete lack of interest/apathy towards sex, I could be Japanese as well.

This is a reference to my posts in a thread about ''Waiting till marriage to have sex''

Thats the price you have to pay for being a big business player worldwide....you kill the spirit of your people step by step.

I have a friend who visited Japan a couple years ago and he noted this as well, even among younger folks, artists, etc, who weren't worked to the bone. Their sex drive is just nil. He didn't really know why... might have to do with diet, culture, who knows... it's really weird and will be sad if the population sinks to unsustainable levels in the near future.

I've been told it's a magical place. This must be why.

On a serious note, holy cow, that's high. Though maybe that's normal? Need stats from other countries to compare.

I wouldn't be surprised to see similar rates in developed countries.

I fell like no one is going to address these issues until the island of Japan resembles Hakuto no Ken. And then it will be too late.

Japan has the highest proportion of elderly citizens in the world. This is bad for economic growth.
