Need fashion advice re: shoes.

I've been looking for a pair of shoes which fit a specific set of criteria, and since I'm beginning to think that there is no possible solution...I thought I'd ask the OT for help.

When I go on business trips (which happens more than I'd like), I have a strict no-more-than-two-pairs-of-shoes policy -- first because I'm a man, and second because I don't feel like lugging a lot of extra crap in the suitcase. I tend to dress up at work (slacks and dress shirts) and the shoes which go with those clothes are too formal to wear with jeans. I need a second pair of shoes which would fit these criteria:

1) I need to be able to work out in these shoes -- not playing basketball, obviously, but stable enough to do cardio at a gym comfortably. So, in addition to construction, they need to have a look which isn't completely jarring when paired with gym shorts and a T-shirt.

2) They should be casual enough to go with jeans and a hoodie, but not so casual that they would look out of place when paired with jeans, a button-up shirt, and a jacket.

My first thought was to look for a pair of sneakers because of requirement #1, but the bottom line is that sneakers look like ASS these days. I love my basketball shoes -- stable, comfortable, light -- but the styling pretty much guarantees that I'd never wear them EXCEPT when I'm working out or playing ball. Most sneakers are either mostly white with garish trim, mostly black with garish trim, or entirely black or white...and I'm told that white and black are "out."

Any suggestions on brands/styles of shoes I should check out, or have I set an impossible set of criteria for one pair of shoes? Am I restricted to mail order, or are there stores that I might have luck shopping in person?

I say wear them with your casual clothes, it will make you look athletic.

So far, I'm really digging those Pumas...thanks for all the suggestions!

a bit of a warning though, i have a pair of those (in white not grey) and they aren't the most comfortable things in the world. I mean, they're all good for just walking around and casual stuff, but i can't imagine trying to do any kind of exercise in them.

About to say the same thing. They make a variety of shoes that look good looking and dont have that garish ghetto look. Try gray.

Not to mention they are the only athletic shoe maker to take width sizes seriously in their massproduced line.

How to be a non-US GAF poster:

You: Americans [like/use] [synonym for poor] [relevant item]

It's funny -- I tried them on yesterday, and all I saw was white/navy and all black. They felt relatively OK, but the toe felt funny -- curved up or something. I'll keep 'em in mind, though. They are definitely in the "sneaker" category, though.

He's not wrong here, though. I'll make an exception for Poody, who posted some shoes that weren't hideous. Are you Canadian, Poody?

I thought that the Shoxx and the Spinna shoezzz were jokes. Am I wrong?

That, and chony's shoes aren't bad, save for the butterscotch rubber bottoms. Yuck.

I don't think 2 pairs are gonna cut it.

1. need cross trainers for the gym, casual shoes = sore feet.
2. joggers and jeans = NO WAY. See Seinfeld.

I like the Nike's ACG line. They're comfortable, great for running, and typically look better than comparable Nike cross-trainers. They're like the rowdy 4x4's of the shoe world, and since I run outdoors, I prefer their rugged tread. Some (but not all) of them pass nicely for casual sneaks, but that depends largely on taste. Check em out..

Don't listen to any of these people. I recommend going to the cheapest shoe place in town (mine is The Shoe Warehouse) and finding a comfortable pair for $10 - $20 that you think looks cool. You'll be hip and original and everyone will assume they're trendy. That's what I do anyway.

Those shoes look fucking HIDEOUS!! I wouldn't wear any of them (save the third pair) if you tried to force me at gunpoint. Flat, stilted soles, poofy at the ankle and tongue, big obnoxious laces..ugh..

I think if somebody was going to cap you and your only savior was wearing ugly shoes, you'd probably wear the shoes.

the thing i don't like about skater shoes is how fuckin fat they all are. Some of them might look decent enough, but once you get them on your feet, they look/feel swollen or something. Thats why i stick to Vans Old School Rowleys.

What program do you use to photoshop a picture?

I used to wear skate shoes all of the time because they are comfortable as hell. They are like wearing pillows around your feet. Then I realized I hadn't skated in over a year, so I stopped wearing them and went and got some other shoes.

you dont have to be a skater to wear skate shoes. But like you said some are very confortable.

If I were you though, I'd just bring some regular x-trainers for working out.
Working out (and especially playing sports) tends to wreck dressy sneakers..

I basically live in Nike Air Maxes and Tailwinds - it's like they're designed for my feet, I know I can always throw a new pair of these on and they'll be comfy from the word go. I try and go mostly for the white leather with a trim colour scheme. Not at all a fan of the Shoxx from a fashion perspective.

I also love my Onitsuka Tigers:

I recommend Vans. There are various styles ranging from classic skate shoes (which actually look very good with suits, in my opinion) to a more conventional sneaker. I'm partial to the Old Skool models. I have an indoor pair (black, goes with anything) and an outdoor pair (palm tree print, a little more exciting).

My recommendations for your dilemma are the Classic Slip-On, Old Skool, or the Geoff Rowley Slims.

yah because they're flat soled. it's not very good for your feet legs or back to be wearing flat soled shoes all the time. you should pick up a cheap pair for workouts and practice though

I'm thinking about getting those grey pumas myself (almost bought them a few days ago at a store, but they didnt have my size)...
...but now that someone said they are not very comfortable, I'm gonna think about it..... they look nice though.

F*ck the space age shit. I have these and they're comfortable. They're nice in that they don't look like they're from the early 90s but at the same time not from the year 3000.
