oh cool, its the video from the ea 360 degree trailer. best nfs video out there, and if i'm not mistaken, its the first time its been posted here

Im with you, I am completely turned off by the visual style and I usually like the gitty look.

BLOOM
LIGHTING

Bloom lighting is the new lense flare. :( PEACE.

Where the fuck is bloom lighting in that shot? I only see HDR shading. If that was a PS3 game shot, you would be finding some esoteric reasonings to praise it's looks.

You're so fucking transparent Duane, so stop pretending to be objective. :lol

The old series is still king.

I own nfs 1 , nfs 1 se, nfs II , nfs 2 se, Nfs II hot pursuit, nfs high stakes, nfs PU, and need for speed 2 hot pursuit. All Pc versions.

Underground sucks and if need for speed most wanted dont have weather effects, like snow and rain and thunder, it will suck.

Not much bloom lighting in that pic at all... some people are just a little too anti-xbox for their own good. Go troll a DS thread or something Duane.

Bloom lighting and lens fare look great when used in moderation.
The bloom in RE4 was great just like the lens flare in TWW was perfect.

The bloom is on the car. Am I blind? Is that something else? It sure doesn't look like glare to me, but I'd gladly be wrong. Every fucking next-gen game coming out looks to be abusing bloom lighting. UE3 and its hellspawn seem to be the #1 offenders in this regard.

And this has nothing to do with the 360. For one, this game is probably gonna come to the PS3, as well as every other system under the sun. It's not like EA is exclusive to anyone. They are portaholics. And I think I've gushed over GoW plenty. The game looks bad to the ass. I don't think the 360 is at all the reason for the abuse of bloom lighting. The problem is gonna affect every system this gen IMO. It gives games this bright, glowing look that just doesn't sit well with my eyes. PEACE.

Again, WTF did I say about the 360? Holy shit, it's not like bloom lighting is only possible on the 360. Hell, even the PC will have problems with it. When I bitched about the excess of DOF last gen, no one called me a DC/Xbox/GC hater for it. I bitched about lense flare the gen before that. There are some effects that devs get ahold of, and can't restrain themselves from using to excess. If bloom lighting isn't one of them, I will be a very happy camper. But from the looks of it, IMO, it's gonna be used like no tomorrow. PEACE.

Then perhaps you should be more careful with the term "Bloom lighting". There's way too much interchanging of "bloom lighting" and "HDR" lighting.

I consider something like below to be "bloom" lighting.

HDR just extends the range of colors you can use. But the top surfaces of the car, from the hood to the rear quarter-panel have a faint aura over them, which reminds me of bloom lighting. HDR just lets you mix bright, brights with darker colors without running out of precision. Ditto the rook of the building in the bg. Looks like there's that damn aura there too. Looks like this:

But, I don't mind being wrong. If it's just HDR without any bloom, then that's fine. But those objects look look like they're glowing to me. PEACE.

What's the "hook" for this one, since it doesn't look much different from every other racer that's come out this year

I know what HDR is, Duane. Thanks though. ;)

I also don't see the "glow" spilling out off the objects and onto the surroundings in that pic. To me, bloom is not just the glow, but glow that spill over into the surroundings. In the NFS pic, the glow is contained perfectly in the surfaces that is glowing.

This looks awesome. This is definitely a must-have title for the Xbox 360.

*pretends to ignore some of the more ridiculous comments in this thread*

BTW, I haven't bashed the look of this game. Just the bloom lighting, or at least what I perceive to be bloom lighting.

Shog: It definitely looks like the light is blooming into the surroundings on my monitor. I'd like to see a bigger pic fa sho. PEACE.

I hate the shitty green and shitty yellow of this game. NFSU has similar but much better executived artistic style.

My 19" Aperture Grille Sony CRT says NYET! (apprently made in Russia?)

If I'm not mistaken, the slightly blurry effect is caused by the use of bloom and tint shaders. You can tune them in such a way that you'll get this effect.

The roof of the building in the background which is overly bright is an example of bloom.

So long as I'm not completely crazy. ;) PEACE.

was the video all in game? It seemed impressive enough to me.

yeah, but judging by the playables framearte, you can bet this wasnt actually "real time". gives you a good indication of what the game will look like with a smooth framerate though

Duane? The famous Charles Duane (or Doane?) from Usenet?

That'd be terribly unlikely, I would have picked it up by now. Besides, YEAH 420!

Neither. I did post as KiiLA on usenet a decade or so ago, though. PEACE.

I might be stating the obvious, but those buildings in the background pale in comparison to PGR3. Is this going to improve at all? EA really doesn't seem to be going into next gen whole-heartedly. Maybe it'll come back to bite them in the ass and reduce this monopoly image they have going?

It looks like the road has some bump-mapping...great!

But the resolution is quite low! Bleh!

Increase the res for that, and the game will look a whole lot better. I mean, it's a racer, you're going to be seeing the road more than anything else.

Oh come on - there's blooming all over the place in that demo :P It's not Wreckless-ly bleeding over the entire screen from each surface, but it's still impressively overdone - which is the trend for 90% of nexgen shots released nowadays anyhow.

You don't need for overly obvious bleeding to know bloom is there - just look at the blurry edges that are the result of bloom filter.

Buh. This looks crap. My respect goes out to my homies at EA.. you're the best, dawgs.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who remembers this episode of Full House.

DJ started going to Junior High School, and to fit in, she started wearing makeup.

But she put on way too much, and looked like a clown/Christina Aquilera.

ll8.jpg

But Becky (not her mom, but a motherly figure as DJ's mom died prior to the show starting in a freak wind tunnel accident) gave her some advice...

"The whole point of make-up is to bring out your beautiful features, but to also make it look like you aren't wearing any."

She showed DJ that putting on subtle make-up will bring out her beauty, so people can focus on the beauty of her face, and not get distracted by her make-up.

EA, please heed the words of Becky, and adopt a more subtle approach to your effects.

First you fall for the ultra-high res GT4 photomode shots...and then this Candice Cameron Photo-mode pic... :D
