Need Help with PS2 games

Ok so my little brother got a PS2... yeah, yeah I know I'm not a real gamer because I don't own one, but with a gamecube and an Xbox I've been ok. I'm not going to be able to play the PS2 when I go back to school, but I'm going to get games anyway.

So far I own:

Ico... which is boring
Katamari Damacy... which is beyond awesome

I'm looking to pick up:

Rez: Is the first one the best or should I get frequency/amplitude or whatever?

Devil May Cry: Again I've played the first one and love it... should I pick up the first or third?

Maximo: Which one is the best? And is it worth it?... I'm a big platformer fan

Wakeboarding Unleashed: if I can find it because I love to wakeboard.

Twisted Metal Black: I enjoyed TM 2 and I heard this one is good.

Any other suggestions?

I want God of War but I'm trying to steer towards cheap games right now. And I don't like RPG's, sports games, or racing simulations. I know someone out there is bored enough to help me.

"Rez: Is the first one the best or should I get frequency/amplitude or whatever?"

Get Frequency RIGHT NOW. It's one of my fav PS2 games, and my favorite music game ever.

ALso, get TM:B, it's awesome if you're a TM fan. It's a ton of fun in multi-player too.

Ok I'll pick'em both up

Get the GAF GOTY aka Metal Gear Solid 3.

Hmmm... I'm not a huge fan of long story driven games but I'll probably get it if its $30 or under. Is it worth it to skip MGS2?

I personally hold the two games as best this gen, but if you only gonna play one I'd say play MGS3. Storywise the two don't connect that much, so you can easily play MGS3 without playing MGS2 first.

You know I think I have a buddy with MGS3. I'll try borrowing it. I've got my Summer break set.

DrLazy gets a PS2 then goes straight for Maximo, now heres a man I can respect. Maximo 2 is by far and above the best platformer this generation, I think.

If your a big platformer fan than then take at look at :

Rachet and Clank Series

Jak series

Sly Cooper series

One thing to note is that Rez is absolutely nothing like Frequency or Amplitude. Rez is a shooter where your actions affect the sounds and music, Freq and Amp are both rythm games like DDR, Donkey Konga, etc, where you're actually playing notes along with songs and such.

While I did like Rez, I've got to give the nod to Frequency (and Amplitude, but I enjoyed Frequency more). The game offers a great range of difficulty, and is just damn fun, as long as you've got even the smallest sense of rythm.

Well I do love shooters. I'll probably pick up whatever game is the cheapest. That reminds me, what's the best shooter on PS2? Neocontra?

another vote on ZoE2

that game
fucking
RAWKs

get Rez, get high/drunk, raise the volume
Get Frequency...skip Amplitude
Get Jak and Daxter or Jak 2 and the last two Ratchet games...if you can't get all then at least get the last two Ratchet games
Get Twisted Metal Black and watch the movies with the whole family
Get Maximo 2...one of the best action platformers out there

damn, i already have a ps2 and this thread is making me add more games to my "Fuck i wish there were more hours in the day so i could play all this shit" list. Maximo 2 (loved the first one, dont know why i skipped over the sequel), NeoContra (someone give me some more impressions) and ZOE2 (if i could ever find a fuggin copy) are all on there now.

ZOE2 is worth the effort to find a copy. It may be my favorite PS2 game.

Also, Maximo 2 is better than the original game (and both are great titles on their own). Neo Contra isn't as good as Contra Shattered Soldier, but that doesn't mean it isn't a blast. The only problem I have with the game is its difficulty. It's much too easy for a Contra title...

I'd also suggest...

(In alpha order)

Adventures of Cookie and Cream (very creative co-op platform that works with 1 or 2 people)
Ape Escape 2 (fun platformer)
Gradius V (fantastic 2.5d schmup)
Klonoa 2 (one of my favorite games on the system. Easy, but fun)
Mark of Kri (very unique and stylish game with lots of variety)
Ridge Racer V (not a racing sim and is the best arcade racer this gen IMO)
Sly Cooper (awesome platformer)

Thats a great list, thanks. I'd forgotten about Gradius V. And I'm unfamiliar with Cookie and Cream. Is it a game I can play with the girlfriend?

Seriously getting a system this late in a generation is AWESOME. I highly reccomend it to anyone who doesn't own one of three consoles. I'm spending about 100 bucks on games with some trade ins (PN03 and ICO) and borrowing the rest, and I'll end up with like 20 titles. Its a great way to finish off this generation of games before the next one comes up.

If you're looking for a game to play with the girlfriend, I'd suggest Lego Star Wars. It's fun and easy. I hear Cookies and Cream can be frustrating if you're not in sync with each other, which could lead to problems >_>.
