Needs ways to make a protein shake

So I finally went out and got a tub of Designer Whey. So it is now day 2 and I already feel like I'm going to get sick of mixing it with milk. I've tried soy milk which is okay but I'd rather have regular milk if it is higher in protein. Regular 2% seems higher from the internet info I've gathered although I've always thought otherwise.

I've heard of mixing chocolate whey power with OJ makes a good drink. Or Strawberry powder with OJ. How do you guys mix the stuff? The more recipes the better.

And when mixing it, I use a fork and I still end up with small clumps. Using a blender seems like a lot of trouble. I never realized how much work just drinking a stupid powder could become.

You need to use a blender. You'll never get the right kind of consistency with a fork, which won't agitate it much. Even a spoon won't work as well.

It depends on the brand and type of powder you use, as the GNC Whey Protein I take blends just fine in skim milk with a butter knife in just under a minute (the solvability has gradually improved as they refine the formula as well). I've been taking with milk for just over a year now and I've never really tired of it in particular; that said, I'll change flavors on occassion and I drink it almost strictly as a workout supplement and not as a meal replacement.

I've never mixed it with OJ, but it sounds like an awful combination waiting to happen.

Don't use soy milk. It would be counter productive. :D

Use skim milk (you want to avoid fat immediately after a work out, because fat will slow down the digestion of carbs and protein).

Water is a popular choice with many people though because opinion seems split on milk. I love it, but bodybuilders (as opposed to weight lifters, power lifters, and athletes in training) don't like milk because they feel it tends to make them a bit bloated and soft looking.

If you're lifting for performance, milk is your friend. If you're lifting to look good, you might get better milage out of just using water, extra protein scoops, and maybe a high GI carb powder, like maltodextrin.

YMMV

Grab a shaker cup or even an old pickle yard and shake violently. Stirring is never good. But a blender is useless unless you are mixing fruit and ice into it.
Mix with either milk or water. Don't worry about the fat content too much. There is not enough fat in a cup or two of milk to have any effect on digestion of the carbs or protien.

two cups of 2% milk is 10 g of fat. If you're anal enough to care about the higher absorption rate of whey protein over just eating a steak, you're probably anal enough to care about the 20 minutes or so that 10g of fat would delay the absorption of the carbs (and thus the insulin spike which packs the protein and glycogen into the muscles).

But in general, I agree with you, I love milk. :D

I used to mix it with anything I had available. I had chocolate flavored powder, though.

Stuff that was good:
Bananas
Strawberries
Peanut Butter
Honey

I tried french vanilla Designer Whey. I'd generally use a half cup of water and a half cup of 2% milk, mixed it all with a hand blender (my shaker bottle couldn't get the job done), and it still tasted like shit. In fact, even after grudgingly mixing vanilla ice cream with it, it still tasted like shit.

I'm not sure what their idea of french vanilla is... it's like they somehow tried to extract a vanilla flavor from the ass of a cow. At best, the flavor is reminiscent of dirty dishwater.

So, um... yeah... short of throwing in A LOT of other fruits and juices, it's gonna taste bad. It wasn't for me, so I went back to my other whey protein after finishing the keg.

Ok.

First.

HAND BLENDER.

Big plastic cup (from the dollar store).

Thirdly, Skim milk or Water (I advise you get used to water. That way you can have your shake anywhere you go)

I use GNC 100% Whey (Vanilla) with water. I just put it into a 16oz water bottle, screw on the lid, and shake the bejeezus out of it. I tried using a couple different bottles and shakers, but they would either leak or leave clumps. Maybe there is some kind of shaking technique involved, but I rarely ever get clumps with this, and it never makes a mess:

Holds two 29g servings + 16oz water with plenty of room to spare. That's perfect, because if there isn't enough air in the bottle it doesn't shake up very well.

Well I don't know about anyone else, but the only reason I came into this thread was to see how long it would take to get to said joke.

That said, any sort of fruit juice (and possibly milk]) will probably help with the creation of a (non-hand blended edit: ha, my sick mind thought Toxic Adam's post was the joke - particularly after belgurdo's post. Oh god... I obviously need sleep) protein shake. My wife has a smoothie maker thing. Easy to make stuff, but I've never dealt with protein powder or anything of the sort before.

put a cup of skim milk*, 2-4 raw eggs and one medium banana into a blender and voi'la, there's your tasty and cheap protein shake. Works for me. =)

*milk with zero lactose
