NeoGAF Anime of the Year 2015 - Voting Thread

Status
Not open for further replies.
1. One Punch Man; Knew it was going to be good, but god damn, it exceeded my expactions. Animation is top notch, the comedy is there and laughed out loud at times.
2. Hibike Euphonium; Cute girls playing instruments. That's all that is needed to be said.
3. Shirobako; Amazing second half of an amazing series.
4. Gundam Iron Blooded Orphans; Show is good, really good. Has some dark elements, even with kids being a major part of the show.
5. Parasyte; Good show, liked every episode of it. Well most.
6. Your Lie in April; Emotional ride, even though you saw it coming from a mile away.
7. Blood Blockade Battlefront; Interesting show, somewhat lost interest throughout the series, but still liked it.

Films/OVAs
1. Little Witch Academia: The Enchanted Parade; loved the first, loved the second.

I'll finally post my list too. I may add pictures at a later date. I wanted to finish Shirobako and watch Oregairu but I don't think it's happening any time soon and I'm pretty happy with my current list. Too bad I don't have anything remarkable for OVAs/Films...

Series:

1. Owarimonogatari ; If I didn't vote vote this first what would I vote? One Punch Man? lol A great sequel to an already amazing series. It's hard for people to get into it as you need to see 70+ episodes, but it's my top recommendation in case you want something different than usual animes.
2. Gatchaman Crowds Insight ; I think this is mostly something I loved. It's a great story that has a lot more to tell and most importantly the cast is awesome. The main character especially. :>
3. Death Parade ; I wasn't sure if I should place this second as there were some parts that I really didn't like. Everything I liked was done perfectly though. Some very intense moments and the main story is really sad.
4. Sound! Euphonium ; One of the biggest surprises and I was late to the party. It's really one of the most pleasant shows of the year, it's just incredibly good and well polished.
5. One-Punch Man ; The worst.
6. Noragami Aragoto ; This was a tough call. The second part of the season was really enjoyable, but I didn't like the first part at all. The ending was really good though, that's why it places quite high.
7. Jojo's Bizarre Adventures: Stardust Crusaders-Battle in Egypt ; Tbh, I enjoyed the first part more, even though this one had some spectaculars battles too. DIO, especially, was better than I expected.
8. Food Wars! Shokugeki No Soma ; A fun ride. Food reactions are still the best part of it.
9. Concrete Revolutio ; The only reason this one is low is because it still doesn't have a conclusion. It was certainly good and I'm looking forward to S2.
10. Ninja Slayer ; Words are not enough to describe the awesomeness called Ninja Slayer. WATCH IT.
x. Shirobako ; I didn't watch it this year at all I think and I had dropped it l. It was mostly okay but it didn't manage to grip me. I had dropped a lot shows then like SAO 2 and Parasyte, so I'll probably give it a proper binge watch someday. I doubt this day is soon though, so I'll just leave it as a honorable mention.
x. Gintama° ; A must watch, but I don't think it's fair to include it as it has 250+ episodes to support it.

OVAs/Films:

1. Digimon Adventure tri. 1: Reunion; I guess this happens when nostalgia is too strong. :( I was extremely happy with this but it's far from perfect. Still loved it.
2. Cassette Girl; Kill La Kill's VHS version with mecha.
3. Hammerhead
4. Kanon
5. Sound! Euphonium OVA ;
x. The rest of the Animator Expo shorts.

And new rule. If Owarimonogatari doesn't rank at the top 3, at least, I'll request a ban for everyone that didn't vote it.

If someone votes Owarimonogatari into their top three and hasn't read Kizu for context on what is actually happening I'm going to need them to turn in their Monogatari card.

But it was already top 3 material with the Sodachi arc!

I don't want to turn in my Monogatari card. :(

Because then they would have scored the series lower or what?

Talking about context, I don't have context of what you are trying to say.

Because then they would have scored the series lower or what?
No. It's better with context. I'm half joking, but it's amusing to me to see really high praise for the show from people who haven't been equipped to see the parts of the show that are actually impressive.

I'm waiting for the movies for context!

1. Dance with Devils; Ritsuka is fabulous.

That's all I have watched this year. Oh, and Yuru Yuri San Hai, but that was an insult to Yuru Yuri.
Also, nice Akarin in the banner.

Series

1. Shirobako - Managed to somehow just keep getting better. Super amazing cast, really solid visuals and the material really interests me.
2. One Punch Man - A superb adaptation, as with the manga the extended cast makes the show. They especially did justice with Genos.
3. Death Parade - Awesome atmosphere, visuals and plot. The cast was a bit weaker than the above with the exception of Nona, which drops it down to 3rd.
4. Parasyte: the Maxim - Great concept, execution and OST. The art was kind of old-school in a refreshing way. Everything with the MC and his parents was ace, the high school friends sort of brought it down.
5. Sound! Euphonium - Again, the subject matter being interesting to me helped here. Visuals and dedication to detail are amazing. The main characters shined, but the extended cast felt a bit flat.
6. Gatchaman: Insight - Some weird pacing but otherwise a terrific sequel. Tackled its new theme pretty well. Hajime stood out again, as did Katze but the rest of the characters felt kind of one dimensional compared to the first season. They really improved on the CG.
7. Prison School - A hilarious and wild ride. Probably would rank much higher if it didn't rely on the VP's ridiculous design so much.
8. Haikyuu S2 - A slower start for the second season, but its starting to get really good again towards the end. In 2016 I think this will rank highly.
9. Gundam: Iron-blooded Orphans - Super solid show and very grounded for a change. The pacing and characters are great (but fuck Orga's hair), only the last on this list due to it being outshone by other series.
x. Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders - Haven't finished! I think it would probably go somewhere near the bottom, not too fond of stands or the characters really.
x. Kekkai Sensen - It had an awesome ED, didn't watch.

Compared to 2014 I think this season lacked a little bit in quantity, but the quality was on-par or above. Here's hoping for good 2016 seasons (come on MHA and MP100)!

I'm waiting for the movies for context!
My hope is that when people watch the Kizu movie they remember what Monogatari is like with really strong staff behind it, and they turn on stuff like Owarimonogatari. :)

Series:

1) Shirobako - I've known for months now that Shirobako was the show to beat this year. I didn't realize how many shows would take a legitimate crack at it, though. Shirobako has characters one cares about, characters one hates and wants to see get smacked with rolled up paper but he gets redeemed holy crap I still can't believe I like Tarou, that one character who was smarmy as fuck and got what was coming hell yeah, and characters that were very believable as anime makers because they're based on real people in the industry. The individual character arcs were great (well, less so for tire girl) and the emotional catharsis from that one scene at the end you know what I'm talking about is incredible and matched this year only by some of the scenes from Euphonium. It's so, so good, and I'm just rambling so I'm going to stop.
ForthrightUnimportantFrigatebird.gif

21) Sound! Euphonium - I absolutely adore this show. I personally probably like it a bit more than Shirobako, but... fuck, I don't know, never mind, these tie for first. Split the points for first and second evenly between them, please. The show is gorgeous, as one would expect from KyoAni, and it hits all the emotional beats just right. The attention to detail in framing is amazing and does a fantastic job of making you feel what the characters feel without having them say "I'm so dejected" or "I'm determined" or "I'm so in love with this girl." Combine all this with its spot-on evocation of high school band, and it becomes one of my favorite shows of all time, and a contender for my favorite Kyoani. Kumiko makes great noises.
cXWQ34e.gif

3) One-Punch Man - Good animation, good voice acting, great source material, there was no doubt that this was going to be good. It's good.
6jI4hnk.gif

4) Iron-Blooded Orphans - Don't make me regret putting this so high, Gundam. IBO is great, I love the characters, I love the Barbatos, I love the gay undertones, I love the smaller scale. It still has time to shit the bed, though, or just fail to go anywhere.
tumblr_nrik33qHpz1r3rdh2o1_500.gif

5) Non Non Biyori Repeat - So good. So chill. So funky. I want Non Non Biyori always.
xijIPaC.gif

6) My Love Story!! - The absolute best fluffy shoujo ever. No drama that's not resolved within 2-3 episodes, characters communicating to solve their problems, big gorilla protagonist, best best friend ever... this show has it all.
nH0Z1Ze.gif

7) Gatchaman Crowds Insight - Really good, but didn't quite do it for me as much as the first season. The second season needed Hajime challenged or not being the answer, and it failed on that count (tho' Hajime's still the best).
I'm tired of finding gifs and you're probably tired of seeing them.

8) Wakako-zake - Good, and chill, and made me want to eat good food and drink good booze. I want more.

9) SNAFU s2 - So much payoff. Season 1 was good, but season 2 really took it to another level. Yui best girl, Irohass also really good.

10) Working!!! - Good and funny with romantic resolutions! Lord of the Takanashi was a great conclusion to the series. Inami is cute.

These shows are some variation of my jam, but I've yet to watch more than a handful of episodes of each:
* Snow White with the Red Hair
* Akatsuki no Yona
* Maria the Virgin Witch
* Jojo
* Symphogear - first season's great fun, but I've yet to get to the rest

Films/OVAs:

1) Love Live The School Idol Movie - Love Live isn't the best anime, but it is great, and I adore it. I also got to see it on the big screen with a bunch of enthusiastic cosplayers and a fellow love liver from the SIF thread, which made it a great experience. Nico.
HSS78N8.gif

2) the Yuru Yuri OVAs - the yryrs are good, and the OVAs captured what is good about them well.

3) Sound! Euphonium OVA - not up to the standards the show set, and not nearly as gay, but still good.

4) DBZ Resurrection F - DBZ is my childhood.

edit: forgot the Euphonium OVA!

No. It's better with context. I'm half joking, but it's amusing to me to see really high praise for the show from people who haven't been equipped to see the parts of the show that are actually impressive.

Became increasingly 'eh' on Owarimonogatari the further it got, so kinda curious if that'll change my opinion on it.

I can never tell if a show is popular because of anime girlz or if it's popular because of dumb stuff like quality writing, good action, interesting plot, etc.

I am baffled at the Snafu 2 love in here. Hated how the second season turned out.

It was an amazing ride to go through personally. I remembered having watched the first season years ago and forgetting about it, only to come back to this season and loving the characters again.

REAL anime lovers think One Punch Man is mediocre: the thread

I only watched OPM and Shirobako all the way through last year, so by default they're my 1 and 2, respectively. I watched Trigun for the first time too but wasn't a fan

But a lot of people who watched many shows are including it in their top 10. Just because it isn't their number one doesn't mean they think it's mediocre.

I can never tell if a show is popular because of anime girlz or if it's popular because of dumb stuff like quality writing, good action, interesting plot, etc.
Well female leads tend to be far more interesting characters since 95% of male leads are boring blank canvas inoffensive self inserts.

I don't love anime

but One Punch Man is mediocre

Have you considered watching Diabolik Lovers, Hero Bank, Ace of Diamond, Seraph of the End, K, Chaos Dragon, or Haikyuu which offer quality writing, good action, and definitive plots?

same tbh.

I explained a lot in my list, and much like the explanations and comments in everybody's list, nobody read it but I'd say that the movement away from comedy to focus more on the drama did more for enhancing the characters and progression of them this season. It certainly had some large weak points (the new girl that Hachiman wastes so many fucking episodes on for the Student Council stuff which lasted too long and was insanely frustrating to watch) but the highs from it were MUCH higher than the first season. The two highest parts of the first season happen at the end with the discussion with Sensei and Hayato's anger but this season had high parts all throughout based around fleshing out the side characters to a large extent, making them way more than the tropes they were based on (Hayato and the fujoshi, as well as the dude who likes the fujoshi get a LOT of depth) and the entirety of episode 8 and that ONE SCENE alone are almost enough to set it head and shoulders above the first season. The ending could have pissed a lot of people of for being, essentially, a "non-ending" but I'd argue that a lot was actually resolved. The first season gets the characters established and sets up the pins and the second season knocks them down. It's where all the shit happens. And while the student council storyline is tedious to watch (despite Hachiman's inability to move being much of the lengthening of it) everything also is better than the first season stuff.

To sum up, I can understand people disliking it due to the stronger focus on drama, the shitty student council sections and the ending I honestly believe the rest of it elevates it above the problems it has.

I'll make sure if it doesn't win to mention repeatedly in a variety of threads how little I care about it winning, making sure to let everyone know whether the conversation is about it or not. I mean, how will everyone know that I really couldn't care less about some popularity voting on an online messageboard unless I bring up the mediocrity of shows that are popular with other people that I didn't like at every available opportunity?

1.Shirobako Because based Mizushima Tsutomu.
2.Houkago no Pleiades Gainax can still make a good show.
3.Soukyuu no Fafner: Dead Aggressor - Exodus alright seems no one care this show in GAF(actually in west), but i care.
4.Hacka Doll The Animation best short TV series this year.
5.Ninja Slayer best animation this year indeed.

Thanks for the throughout reply. I really reall disliked the second season and felt it was much weaker than the first. I am not an enemy of drama and tearjerking, hell, I love Key adaptations. But Sbafu 2 just bored me. It's of course valid for other to like it, I was just surprised.

I watch a lot of Anime and I know that one punch man will be my #1. But what I want in Anime isn't entirely the same as others.
It's a popular vote anyway. You like what you like for any reason. There doesn't have to be a big background of knowledge, although it would be nice.

Otaku's decides which one's are popular and which aren't.
Almost correct. Those who pay for the very expensive anime are the ones that decide the tone. And well, that are of course mostly the anime enthusiasts. If everyone would put their money where their mouth is, the anime landscape would look different.

1. One Punch Man
2. Sound! Euphonium - another quality Kyoani series; better than K-On
3. Shirobako - I left this series unfinished until I started reading this thread and saw its prominence on many lists
4. Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works - pretty fantasy fightan anime
5. Working!!! - character stories are concluded! And still funny
6. Haikyuu!! - consistently good, will probably be in next year's lists too

x Kantai Collection - just because I like KanColle. the anime turned out to be neither bad nor great.

When I think about the top 3, I'm not really certain about the ranking. I think I'd have to rewatch them all again to be sure (I won't).

And the other anime I watched....
your lie in april
sailor moon crystal (dropped)
gintama (too many eps to catch up on)
plastic memories
subete ga F ni naru

  1. Kiseijuu: Sei no Kakuritsu; was basically the best thing I've seen in ages. I really liked everything about this show.
  2. Shirobako; was great, and the animation quality was awesome.
  3. Gakkou Gurashi; was a good manga adaption, but I didn't like how they changed up the chapter order.
  4. Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders; is Jojo. 'nuff said.
  5. One-Punch Man; was a great take on shounen shows and a lot of fun to watch.
  6. Ninja Slayer; was just so much fun to watch. And the soundtrack was capital-A Amazing.
  7. Akatsuki no Yona; was one of the better shoujo adventure shows of the last years.
  8. Shokugeki no Souma; had cooking and foodgasms. As a cook, I love this show.
  9. Punch Line; started great but became weaker towards the end. Still fun, though.
  10. The Rolling Girls; I liked the road trip theme and the soundtrack bumps it up significantly.

1. Blood Blockade Battlefront
This was fantastic. Turning New York into a melting pot of monsters, vampires and super humans made for a very interesting setting. The characters were entertaining and the interactions between them were great. Though they didn’t delve into their individual backgrounds or how they came to Libra, you could still tell how close knit they were. It was episodic for the most part with the main plot trickling along in the background that I thought came together well in the end. It has amazing visuals, characters, and of course that soundtrack. The only thing that wasn’t amazing was the wait for the last episode. Hopefully a second season comes; such a jazzy stylish show deserves an encore.
Also looking forward to whatever Rie Matsumoto directs next.

2. Shirobako
I think anyone who is a bit interested in how an anime is made should at least check this out. I was expecting a good show when it first started but didn't think it would turn out as great as it did. Has such a large cast aside from the main 5 girls but they were still handled well. Due to that they managed to tackle a number of areas throughout the show. It was very enjoyable to see how some of them grew over the season and how much you can tell they have in the end. It was great to get a little more insight into the process of how an anime is made. And to top it off it had one of the best finales of the year, beautifully ended.

3. Owarimonogatari
Here is another entry in the Monogatari series. Ougi is such a fascinating character to watch and she had the first half of this season wrapped around her finger. Her interactions with Araragi were very entertaining. Then having some of my other favorite characters back again always makes for a good Monogatari season, so if you follow the series and haven’t watched the new season yet, expect another good one.

4. Non Non Biyori Repeat
It was great to have this anime back. Among all the action or drama shows it’s nice to have a peaceful show like this, something to just relax to. It may have some sad moments sprinkled in here and there but the lighthearted feeling is prevalent throughout the whole show and it’s appreciated. It can put you in a really good mood.

5. Durarara!!x2 Ten
Enjoyed this more than Shou, but I suppose that’s because a good bit of this season built up off the groundwork Shou laid down, so it was nice to see things intensify even more in Ikebukuro. It’s coming together very nicely and set stage for the final part Ketsu.

6. Assassination Classroom
I enjoyed this quite a bit, it had a nice mixture of humor and action with some touching scenes. Seeing the class’s skills rise was nice to see as well as how their teamwork improved into more elaborate attempts to take out Koro Sensei. Besides their skills it was nice seeing them personally get closer to Koro Sensei and look towards him as their teacher that they depend on. I’m looking forward to the upcoming season.

7. My Two-Faced Little Sister (Himouto Umaru)
This anime managed to entertain me every week and kept me laughing. Just seeing what nonsense Umaru would do or say next made it very amusing; her friends can be pretty entertaining too. Even if Umaru can be really annoying to her brother Taihei at times they still have a good bond and it was nice to see those moments when it was focused on.

8. Noragami Aragoto
The first of half of this was pretty good, I like delving a bit more into the backstories and there was a decent bit of action. The latter half was better though, Yato had some great scenes. Yukine too, he’s developing nicely from the annoyance he was in the first season. Overall this was a nice step up from the previous season.

9. One Punch Man
Will echo previous sentiments, this had some amazing animation, those action scenes were incredible. Saitama is a great unconventional hero and watching him was humorous. He may not get recognition from everyone but the acknowledgment he gets from Genos and Rider was pretty good.

10. Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers

The settings itself made it feel fresh from the usual fantasy anime. The mystery aspect didn’t turn out to be extremely surprising but it did get me second guessing now and again and trying to figure out how the act was executed. The cast had some annoying ones but for the most part they were straight. This was a nice watch.

Films/OVAs

1. Mushishi: The Next Chapter :Drops of Bells

Mushishi is one of my favorite series so it was a little bittersweet to watch the last bit of material. However, I thought it had a beautiful end that once again explores the theme of Mushi, nature, and humans and how they can converge and diverge. The atmosphere, music, and visuals were as wonderful as ever. This was truly a beautiful finale for a masterpiece.

2. Psycho-Pass Movie

A pretty good action movie to wash out the horrible taste season 2 left.

3. Little Witch Academia: The Enchanted Parade

Thought it was a pretty good follow up, I liked the new characters.

Honorable Mentions:

x Sound! Euphonium
This was a stunning show and it made me reminisce a little bit about playing in band. The characters are entertaining to watch, though there is one I could have done without because of their brat like personality but they’re not a big focus. However, for the ones that were focused on it was nice seeing their growth through failure and success. Definitely will be watching the second season

x Snow White with the Red Hair
This was a good romance. One of the best things about this was Shirayuki, she is a great female lead and not some damsel in constant distress. She was very determined and had a great personality throughout the season. Zen was a pretty good lead as well, has a lot of compassion for the people around him, know what his duties are and sharp-witted. This had some very nice visuals too. Also good music that kind of reminded me of Dragon Quest VIII a bit lol it had a nice sense of adventure. So definitely in for the second season.

x My Love Story
Simply put this was a sweet romance with a nice dose of comedy. It was nice to have one without the usual tropes. It was fun watching Takeo and Yamato. Also the friendship between Takeo and Suna was displayed very well.

x Castle Town Dandelion
Overall this was a good anime and had some good consistency; enjoyed all the episodes. Also for such a big cast of characters I felt each one got enough attention on their own as well as with the other siblings. Even got a backstory in with the parents.

x Seiyu's Life
While Shirobako tackled a number of areas in the anime industry this one focused solely on the voice acting. It turned out well; I wasn’t that fond of the character designs though. But watching the trio try to pave their way was very interesting as they tried to overcome hurdles like losing roles, trying to get into character and balancing social life. Another cool thing was having veteran voice actors appear as themselves thought that was really neat.

x Ushio and Tora
Fun series, I like how they kept the old style but updated it a bit. The episodic start off wasn’t bad since the side characters were interesting, plus Ushio and Tora are entertaining to watch with their antics. But when the main plot started to be explored more deeply things got even better and raised beyond my initial expectations. There were some areas that felt a bit rushed but even with the pacing a little off at some points this turned out to be a very good watch.

x Shokugeki no Soma
An over exaggerated cooking anime that turned out great. The characters were really fun. And the food recipes were cool, makes me want to try making at least one.

x Gourmet Girl Graffiti
This was a nice heartwarming anime. It also had a focus on food but very different from Shokugeki no Soma. No competitions, just a girl learning the joys of having someone enjoy your cooking and also just having someone to share a meal with.

Out of the 5 that I have watched this year:

1. Shirobako - Great visuals, character development and insight into the industry. This was made with a lot of passion.

2. Gintama (2015)- Continuation of my favorite series.

3. One Punch Man - Highly entertaining, great action and voice acting.

4. Lupin the Third (2015) - Nostalgic series, well done, not many have seen this.

5. Charlotte - Great animation, lacked good execution in regards to story and character development.

1. Food Wars! Shogugeki no Soma; Besides from the obnoxious first episodes, the anime really shines in the way it delivers it's premise. It's a really fun ride and you actually learn a lot about the process and complexity of cooking. A refreshing shonen show.

2. Assassination Classroom; With 2 really different leads for the genre, this show manages to be really interesting in how it portrays the duty of a teacher and the impact it can have on his alumni, with the fun context of a light shonen. A lot of interesting moments and clever conflict resolution.

3. Noragami Aragoto; greatly animated, interesting characters that show growth on their journey, attractive premise and overall great art direction and OST (specially that opening song, so good)

4. Kuroko no Basket S3; Starts kinda slow but the last match is incredible, with some of the best animation ever shown on an anime of the sports genre. The story, too, manages to end full circle as the lead deals with the conflict of his past and moves on. Great watch.

5. Prison School; good adaptation that kinda loses the beautiful artwork that's part of the soure material, though it delivers in the comical aspect a lot. Great work with the voice acting and smart pacing.

1. Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders; Your thoughts on Series A.
2. One Punch Man; Your thoughts on Series B.

I found that the comedy can vary from person to person. Some people will get it and think the entire series is funny, other don't "get it" and think the humor is hit and miss, and therefore the action is also predictable.

I gOT it and it was a fun, but I dropped it after a f e because it just didn't resonate with me. Oh well.

It's a popular vote anyway. You like what you like for any reason. There doesn't have to be a big background of knowledge, although it would be nice.

It's simple this year:

#1 OPM
#2 Shirobako
#3 ******

Everyone is voting for #3 (the real #1,lol)

#1 OPM
#2 Shirobako
#3 ******

Looking at the thread so far it's going to be damn close run between OPM and Shirobako. Personally I hope Shirobako takes it after being robbed last year, but we seem to have a lot of the lists with those as the top 2, and then a load that have one really high but missing the other.

Also a lot people (both people who dislike it and people who like it!) seem to think there's no actual story progression or character development beyond Saitama going up in rank, which is demonstrably false. It's just subtle and understated and overshadowed by the comedy and action.
