NeoGAF Arcade Stick Thread

Hey GAF, I have a question and this seems like the thread to ask it in. I've gotten increasingly into fighting games over the past year, and I think it is time that I invested in a stick (for the 360). So the question is: Which would you recommend the Hori EX2 or the Mad Catz Street Fighter IV SE? I don't think I'm likely to get heavily into modding the stick, so modability isn't a big deal. Thanks, and sorry to interrupt things far more interesting and technical.

I thought it was strange because the converter still works and recognizes the stick but none of the commands work. Even stranger, the stick works completely fine on PS2 and GCN/Wii with a converter. I guess a PS3 firmware update could have broken compatibility but he told me he hasn't updated since like, Valkyria Chronicles. My VSHG and his Rockband instruments are recognized so I know his USB ports are fine.

Anyone know WTF could be wrong?

Update the firmware? If not he could try a different adapter, like the InPin.

SE has a larger footprint than the EX2, making it more comfortable for lap play. SE is also significantly easier to replace with arcade-spec parts, but since you have no intention of modding it, it really shouldn't matter. SE has a longer cable and more features (turbo, analog stick functionality) but I don't really use those. I do prefer the EX2s button array though (6 buttons FTW).

If you're POSITIVE you won't be modding the thing anytime in the future get whatever is cheaper (I assume EX2). Otherwise get the SE and save yourself future hassle.

Go with the SE stick, just in case later on down the road you DO want to get into modding it.
 
Quick question with regards to the Sanwa shaft cover: One end is slightly narrower than the other. Which side goes down against the dust cover and which side goes up connecting with the ball top? Thanks.

it should get thinner as it nears the balltop
 
Is there someone here or on SRK that I can send my two modded EX2s to? My second one is starting to act funny mid-match (SFIV), where half of the inputs stop responding.

I spent some time putting these together for me and my coworkers. All together, we built 9 of them. I cut the boxes, plexi, and wired all the controllers. We all assembled, painted, and added graphics to our own joysticks.

I had two, one with a SoulCalibur 4 graphic, and the other with Zack and Wiki. Why Zack and Wiki you ask? I wish I could provide a good answer. I just happen to love the art style, and thought it looked cool. (I sold one to a desperate friend during the SF4 joystick drought.)

Because I spent most of my time playing American arcades, I have an affinity for the concave buttons and teardrop joystick... although I realize many fighting game fans consider this blasphemous.

All-in-all, they were a bit more expensive than I would have liked.. ($115 for the materials) and one of our co-workers even had hookups with Microsoft to get controllers on the cheap. I would definitely prefer to play with one of these as opposed to the Hori sticks, mostly due to the heft of them and more familiar hardware, but they are quite a bit of work.
 
That is really nice acanaday! As one who spent his high school years in American arcades twenty years ago that is a site to behold, for sure. I'm hoping a manufacturer releases a good American style stick in the next few years. Gotta be a market for it.

Probably has been answered before but what's the best way to play PS2 fighting games with a stick? I assume USB peripherals like the TE stick aren't compatible?

I assume you mean PS2 games on a BC PS3. HRAP 3s are compatible. I use an HRAP 2 with a Pelican usb adapter.

Well, if you go to lizard lick or amazon, they tell you which ones are used for the sf4 se stick. I just ordered 1 sanwa stick and 6 sanwa buttons from lizard lick. Now i just have to find a kinkos around here to do the custom art and my stick is good to go! :-)

"N" in the naming convention = screw in
No "N" in the naming convention = they snap in like the stock ones.
 
Cheers, I have a friend who runs a little enterprise in his spare time with a ton of pink buttons lying around... he's been good enough to send them over. I need to figure out an art mod for it now to match the buttons :lol

Speaking of Arcade Stick, does anyone know anything about the one included with Tekken 6? Seems like an upgraded Hori Fighting Stick EX2, wireless. Really hoping it's more like the Real Arcade Pro EX... a man can dream, right?

Anyone got experience modding a Fighting Stick EX2, worst case scenario?
 
Yeah, the Tekken 6 stick is probably full-Hori and soldered, but we still haven't heard anything definitive.

I'm assuming Hori's October domestic release of the HRAP3SA and HRAPEX-SE are to satisfy the serious players around T6's launch.
 
Quick questions since I just noticed the HRAPs are coming out here in Europe (fucking finally, thanks Mad Catz for showing them we also care):

What's the size of the Start/Select buttons?
Can I use Snap In Seimitsus on the EX (should I use those anyway?)? I remember reading something about some stick only allowing Screw ins, but not sure which one it was.

you do realise that the trend of using Japanese parts is relatively recent, right? Many old-school players, including John Choi prefer to use Happ (American) parts.

Marvel players also prefer Happ. It's just personal preference. Most people now use Japanese parts because that's what Mad Catz uses, or because they're hardcore tourneygeeks or because they live in Cali/NY, where we have arcades that have Japanese cabs and thus Japanese parts.

Just an FYI. Even I prefer to use Happ stuff for Marvel

Start and select are the 24mm buttons. Seimitsu PS-14-D or Sanwa OBSF-24 work. Both Snap-ins and screw-ins are fine with the HRAPs. The FSTE can be a bit fussy with screw-ins because there is limited space between the button closest stick's mounting bracket, but that can be worked around

Just got my Madcatz SFIV TE Stick this week's monday, and boy do I love it!

Funny thing that this is my first arcade stick ever, and only after owning it for a couple days I want second one :lol.

Only thing that bugs me about this stick, it's the joystick itself which is square gate I pressume? So I was wondering just how easy it would be to change to octagonal one, if it is possible of course.
 
Any GAFers doing custom sticks without me supplying a stick? Arcade-in-a-Box stopped shipping to Europe and I don't know any other options. I'll pay a decent sum obviously.

Plenty of other places sell them, but I had that window open anyway.

Probably the easiest mod out there, just takes a 3mm hex screwdriver (most me about $5 at home depot, for the black screws on top), and a regular phillips head screwdriver. When you take it apart you'll see the square gate held in with 4 screws, take em off and replace with the one above, and thats it!

Nice! Thanks for the link! Just placed my order on Lizardlick, hopefully it won't take too much time to arrive. After fixing the stick, think I'll go with custom art, hopefully I won't wreck my stick :lol!

Found this guy through friends of mine/ shoryuken. He makes custom plexi replacements for the TE stick, great quality too, and you can have him make etchings (like Marmans awesome chun stick), and he makes six-button variants too. The main reason in myself getting one is that the default red art is kinda stuck to the plexi, plus I wanted six buttons instead of eight.

Myself and about 3 of my friends can vouch for his work, it's good stuff.
