NeoGAF Arcade Stick Thread

Haven't played a lot of fighting games in forever but I just picked up SFIV with the $20 deal and am very seriously considering MvC2 also. As someone who has been out of the scene for a while (without the option of a PS3), can I ask if the fightpads really are much of an improvement or is a joystick the only way to go?

Like I said, it's been a while and I'm somewhat unsure about making that kind of investment -- not even the cash so much as limited apartment space -- but this 360 d-pad just isn't going to cut it.

cables storage is seriously an underrated feature too :)

Your telling me! Have a couple of sticks out and those cords are just nasty, nasty to keep in order. For the SE it is the slope that is its most underrated feature...love it! Little details are important.

MarkMan,

That is one tough crowd over there at SRK! That forum can be brutal.

Seems the Comic Con TE's price is down-to-earth so I think I'll go for one...about the same price as an import Hori. I actually don't have a TE in my collection since I chopped my sole version up for a Wii mod so I need to get a version of the high-end Mad Catz into my collection anyways. Still surprised to not see any photos of it from GAF members.

I don't consider a joystick a must, but a fightpad is huge improvement over the stock 360 pad, which is unplayable, IMO. I will admit I'm a pad junkie, though.

I'd say at least one of the two is a must, however. The 360 pad is that bad for these.

All the awesome custom art for the TE sticks that i have seen in this thread...I was wondering if the image files have been posted here or anywhere for download?

SRK is tough, but I love em' :)

I'll post pics of my personal sticks (SDCC ones) later... Been too busy (ie. lazy)..

Cool, NCS seems to be shipping the NeoGeo 2 USB Sticks for PS3!

Did you get the card charged yet? Mine hasn't :-( Still a couple more hours New York time for it to go out today, hopefully. It is killing me playing KoF with all six buttons getting in the way...gotta get my Neo Stick to play it proper-like.

Incidentally, NCS also got some Black Wiis in!

A question for you stick savants; I am considering getting a TE stick. I am terrible with a square gate, however, and would like an octagonal gate.

How hard is it to swap out the gates, and where can I find said gates? I ask because I've never owned a stick, and reading this thread gives me the impression that there's a good variety of gates that can only be used with certain sticks.

Edit: Markman, your link is busted.

That's what appears in the address bar.

You ask GAF before you ask me in person?
:(

Gate swapping square for octo is super easy on a JLF.
http://screwattack.com/Random/ArcadeStickMod

The part is called Sanwa GY-Y. It's available on sites like lizardlick.com and modchipman.com.
Lizardlick is mad slow in the post-SFIV world, but I've done business with them before stick madness hit the masses and they're very reputable.
Also, check the buy/sell/trading thread here or ask GAFfers in this thread if they have any extra GT-Ys

FlightOfHeaven,

I've got an extra Sanwa GT-Y Octagonal gate if you want it. Just PM me an address and I'll drop it in the mail if you need it.

I know you lurk GAF hardcore, and I didn't want to disturb ya after work! I figured this'd be easier.

Anywho, it seems I've met with success! That tutorial makes it look extremely easy to swap out the square gate (boo) for an octagonal gate (Awesome!).

Any video like that on the SE stick? I've never actually seen a GOOD, CLEAN video of how to open that shit up without breaking it :3

Fuck this, after playing some offline matches(9hrs) of SSF2THD:R, Giant Gram 2000, Last Blade 2, BlazBlue, KOFXII, VF5 and SCIV. I realise, I need a stiffer stick. I thought about it in the past, but never went about it. Anyway, do I need to get a Happ Stick or Seimitsu?

I still cant figure out how to hold my TE stick properly... And it feels like my right hand is to small to hit all the buttons properly.
*sad*

I have 8 OBSF-30 buttons in my SF4 SE stick, four of them doesn't register that well in the outer edges. It's fine if I really push the button. But if I slide in from a button that's next to it, it will not register the press. Can this be fixed in any way? Oddly it's only four of the buttons that act this way. The thing is that just nudging the button can register but the edge slide just doesn't work.

I just sent my 2 VSHGs to akuma001 to get the PS3 boards swapped with cthulhus to eliminate any possibility of input issues as well as to get them dual modded for 360 support. I'll see you 360 players online soon.

So I'm starting to get into the fighting scene and really want a good entry level stick. Nothing over $100 and for the 360 though one that works with the PS3 would be nice. I would just like to get a bit better at BlazBlue, SFIV, and MvC2 and it seems like a stick would make it a bit easier to pull of some of the moves. Any suggestions?

Madcatz SE stick is $70 and decent. Can be upgraded later on with TE components if you really like using it.

At buy.com the TE stick is $125. Yeah it's $25 over your limit but it's the best stick money can buy and it's a million times better than that SE stick. Get it now and be amazed.

Hey stick builders, where is LizardLick located? Which State?

I placed an order today and want to gauge when to expect my shipment.

Also what service do they use for shipping? USPS/UPS/Fedex?

A coworker picked up a Comic-Con Xbox 360 fightpad for me when he was at the show. I finally opened it up today to break it in with a little Marvel vs Capcom 2, when I realized that something's not quite right about the d-pad. I can pull off QCFs to the right 100% of the time, but to the left it's about 5% of the time, rising significantly when I really, really push on the pad. Something just doesn't seem to connect.

Being that my coworker nabbed it for me, I don't have a receipt. Is Madcatz pretty good about taking in warranty repairs if I don't have the sales receipt? Am I stuck with this seemingly defunct pad? (It looks like a goddamn dream, though -- much as I love my Chun-Li, I really want this one to work.)

Finally popped open my HRAP3 to see why my joystick was feeling sticky. Turns out, it was catching the twist-tie that holds all the cabling innards together. A stray end of the twist tie was getting caught between the gate edge and the base of the stick.

After "fixing" it, I can't believe the difference. I'd gotten so used to that sticky feeling, that it's like a whole new experience. It's like having lead weights attached to your feet, taking them off, and then running. Feels like flying. :D

Give them a ring, they have to know it's in warranty because the SDCC version just came out!

i lost the URL to a small web store that would sell clear plexi panels pre-drilled for buttons and a stick. you'd just make a box around it and install the components. they had a regular and reinforced version available for sale.

anyone happen to have the URL? hope they're still doing business...

Okay, I have a question. I have a hori ex2 but I have big hands and I use charge character; is it worth it to buy a bat top and a octagonal gate?

So I'm no Photoshop wizard. I really want a relatively clean black and white Arakune design for my SE stick. I intend to use black butons and stick. This is where I am so far...

What's the process for changing the image on the stick? I don't mind the characters, but I really hate having the logos on the sticks. I would like to make my SE & TE sticks looks more like they belong in the living room and less like "toys".

Anyone know how easy it would be to mod the Hori Wii Digital Arcade Stick?

Also, is there anything out there that converts a Gamecube Controller to a PS2 pad, or heck, anything thats not USB? I know there are a ton of PS2 to GCN ones, but I can't find one to do it the other way around. And if not, you think me spicing a few PS2 and GCN extension cables to let me use the convert I have backwords would work :lol

What's this about? Whre can I find more info and pricing on this?

Yeah, I sent my second 360 TE to Jay to have it modded for cross platform play. I'm tired of having two sticks laying out in my living room. Plus, I like the cable management of the TE. Just hit him up, I'm sure he's always looking for business. His username is Akuma001.

I can vouch for akuma's work as well. He dual modded my VSHG and also I ended up secondhand with an EX2 that he made into a wireless sanwa stick. His work is top notch and his fees are ultra reasonable.

i think you were talking about gamingnow.net he just recently changed the layout and added more stuff
he seems to only sell whole cases. i'm just looking for pre-drilled plexi

I myself have a hori fighting stick 3, i just ordered 2 weeks ago and had for a week. Great stick, great price compared to the others. I mean 150 for the TE and 120 for the hrap? I could buy 2 and 3 of the quality one i bought. yeah, its tougher to mod (so i hear) but still works great. Playing street fighter 4 with it is much better than with a dualshock 3.

How much did you pay and got any pictures of your stick to see his work? Any way to do this without cutting into the casing?

I've got a VSHG and a TE that I'd like to get working on both platforms.

nah, not covers for other sticks. the small online shop i'm looking for sold pre-drilled plexi panels that were strong enough to mount buttons/stick directly to it. you'd just build the rest of the box frame around it and install the components.

i have http://www.crookedjester.com/sticks/ bookmarked but the page is gone... i'm worried this is the page i wanted.

i'm considering building a cocktail arcade cabinet and wanted to save time by getting something pre-drilled.

guys im about to get a green goblin dreamcast stick (new in box)

will this be ok to play? are the buttons/stick sanwa/seimetsu or anything?

is it square gate or octagonal?

i have a madcatz TE Stick as well so just want to make sure it will be ok to play my DC games..or will i have to open the thing up?
