Newbie here on the arcade stick front. Will I notice the difference in the se sticks or should I be ordering Sanwa parts and replace them from the start?

I would use the stock parts to sort of get used to using the stick, then switch to Sanwa stuff once it wears out. Whatever you do do NOT start using a stick and then jump back to a pad for practice or because the stick is difficult to use at first. Every time you go back to pad while learning to use stick you drop a few levels in expertise.

Man I'm tempted, how easy is it to change the artwork/buttons/stick on these? It's been a while since I did any modding...

you're welcome guys

oh zlatko, here is their direct link to the octagonal gate: http://www.gamingnow.net/joysticks/sanwa-joysticks/jlf-gt-y

With these octagonal gates, how much do they improve performance in Pac man championship edition? (on the standard sticks he tends to get stuck or doesn't register a turn quick enough) also can they be inserted into a stock street fighter iv stick (standard and/or tournament edition.

So the A button on my HORI EX2 stick stopped working. I got it because it was cheap and I didn't feel like dropping +$100 for something I wasn't sure I would even use. But now I can't go back to a pad.

If I buy new button parts would it be almost as good as a TE stick?

My tip is if you got it for PS3, then right now there is a CRAZY good deal with a link above that is selling brand new SF4 TE sticks for 99.99. That's a 50 dollar savings.

If you want a 360 one though, wait a few days, because there is a tournament coming up for SF4 where Madcatz will most likely do another promo giving 20-30% off sticks taking the 150 sticks down to 105. I bought one and I could never go back after more and more time with it.

As for replacing parts and putting them in I looked at that myself before I was ever going to buy a TE. I was going to get a SE and then replace the stick and buttons to sanwa and it almost comes up to 100 bucks either way. My advice is just pay up the 100 bucks and never look back. These sticks are a thing of love and beauty. :D

Hmm, yeah I have it for 360. But okay, I guess I'll wait and see if they do that promo. I was just worried that since SS4 is around the corner, history would repeat itself and the price would skyrocket.

Thanks a lot!

EX2s are a huge pain to put new buttons into. Lots of de-soldering and then soldering on wires and QDs and cramming it all into the case.

Now you know you like the sticks! Get yourself a TE or HRAP!

octagonal gates make Pac Man play much worse.

rotate the stock square gate of a Sanwa JLF 45 degrees clockwise like shown in the first part of this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQLXRD-0GBg

that will eliminate diagonals altogether and leave you with only the 4 cardinal directions
just like arcade Pac Man!

it feels much better for that game, and others like Tetris that don't make use of diagonals.

I've been told that octo-gates are better for motion characters like Ryu. So I'm interested in getting one. If you don't mind can you guys give me your opinion of it and point me out to where I can buy it and a guide to take my stick apart and swap it out.

I have SSF4 TE stick and it's only my 2nd stick, but unlike the first time I plan on using it exclusively till I get the hang of it. I've also never done something like opening up a stick so I'm nervous about that. If anyone has a link to a guide, I'd appreciate it.

My personal opinion is that octo-gates are better for no one. The game is clearly designed for a square gate. Some practice and you'll have no problem doing any of Ryu's moves with it.

Oct-gate makes ultras like Guile's and Vega's next to impossible. (if you're in to low tier characters like me.)

Changing the gate isn't magically going to make you better at using the stick... keep the normal gate and just practice, practice, practice, is my advice.

Stick-GAF. I have a question. I spotted the Limited Edition Blazblue HRAP3 for under £50 new. I know the stock Hori buttons are soldered in on all the licensed sticks but the price is still very attractive for my first stick. Would you buy it? I could always de-solder them this summer when I have the time to learn how...I think eheh :D

Fuck yes. Get it... £50 is a pretty great price, no?

Are there any places online that still sell PS2 sticks? I've got two sticks for 360 but I would rather not mod them to play PS2.

Are the mayflash sticks on amazon easy to put new buttons and stick in?

Go for it! I just played on one of these last week - the Hori buttons are alright, but the price is more than fine considering the case, PCB, and JLF.

They require desoldering, widening the button holes (will fit 28mm buttons but need to be filed/dremeled for 30mm), and some parts of the JLF body need to be cut off to be mounted properly. So a pretty involved mod.

I know this design and template has been done to death, but I love it and decided to put a little spin on my mod

And people wonder why Europeans lag behind Japan and the US at arcade style fighters.

1. We have no arcades anywhere but in big cities, and even then the machines are raggy-ass old or removed in favour of gambling stuff.

2. There's no offers out in Europe on arcade sticks, nor are there big tourneys or promos, at least that I know about (and I read the gaming press pretty regularly).

Not raggin' on MM or anyone here, just having a moan about Europe laggin' behind AGAIN with everything gamer related.

Once again, Canada bites the dust...

I still haven't seen the Super Street Fighters IV sticks here :(

Will we get it MM?

I've gotten myself a SFIV TE stick a few months ago, played a little with it and left it alone ever since.

The main reason for doin so is the ball top stick of the TE. I can't seem to place my hand around it for it to be comfortable to play with.

Basicly, instead of the balltop stick I need this:

Where to buy them? European sites, any local sites in the Netherlands or American sites to buy those long sticks ( don't know the proper naming).

I really want to use my stick otherwise it's just a waste because of the balltop.

lizardlick.com ships internationally. I used to be into teardrops (bat tops), but I can't find any large enough. The stock lollipops (ball tops) on the TE sticks are 35mm in diameter, and all compatible teardrops I've seen for sale are 30mm. Instead, I went with jumbo 'pops that are 45mm in diameter, and was so impressed, I ordered 5 more for all the other sticks I own.

The name you are looking for is bat top. Gamingnow.net also ships internationally: http://www.gamingnow.net/joysticks-and-accessories/lb-30n-bat-tops

Alright, teardrops or bat tops are the proper naming for them, thanks.

So, what you guys are showing/telling me are just the tops of the stick, meaning I can unscrew the ball and screw on a bat top?

did you check online for stick tips? a lot of people have trouble switching to an arcade stick, it takes time to get comfortable. good starting place - http://www.eventhubs.com/guides/2009/jul/08/tips-switching-pad-joystick/
I will keep this in my favorites and try it out in the weekend, thanks.

Yep. You just have to open the casing to get underneath the stick before unscrewing the top. In the case of the TE, you'll need a 3mm hex key and a flathead screwdriver.

For Canadians Capcom US has them on their store for preorder for April 27th when SSFIV hits and they ship to Canada.
Other than their website I haven't seen it anywhere but maybe prior to it's release Amazon or something will stock it.
But that's one option.

I'm in Canada and I got my round 1 TE from the Capcom store last year. Fast shipping and I didn't get screwed on customs charges. No complaints at all on my part.

Oh man, that's superhandy. I guess it's easy to do. Right?

Also, the link RapidCancel gave me, are those the 30 mm you were talking about? If so, give me the link to those 45 mm you were talking about befor. If not, thanks anyway.

I will try out the thing from eventhubs, but my old arcade from long long ago who doesn't exist anymore used to have bat tops as far as I can remember.

Thanks again guys, appreciate the help. It's time for me to go to bed. Good night!

StickyFingers said:

Yep, that's all you have to do. You open up the stick and take a flat head to the bottom of the stick to keep it from spinning, then just unscrew the ball top and screw in the bat top. I actually have a white bat top I never use somewhere in my house...if you want I can sell that to you.

I don't believe it was me talking about that. Are you talking about the ball tops? Those come in different sizes, but I believe all the bat tops are all one size. Gamingnow.net doesn't sell the 45mm ball tops, but lizardlick does here: http://www.lizardlick.com/pages/joysticks.shtml

$150 I think. Whatever it was everywhere else. I paid like $35 for shipping though, but that's pretty reasonable for overnight international with no customs charge.

For anyone too lazy to check, shipping to Canada from the Capcom store for the new SSFIV TE sticks is $55.35 for UPS Express and $50.35 for UPS Economy.

Are the TE's that much better than the cheaper fightstick? I'm kinda curious since the price is much cheaper.

Not really, no. They're prettier, and offer a larger surface if you have big gorilla hands, but the buttons and stick are pretty much molded clones of the sanwa parts, and only differ in slight feel, not usability.

SquirrelNuckle said:

Actually, it's like a BMW 3 series and BMW 5 or 7 series. The TE uses all Sanwa parts (joystick and buttons). Has a cable storage compartment. Easier to swap out artwork. It uses 24mm buttons for start and select. It pays homage to the Viewlix cabinet design. It weighs a little more, so it doesn't move as much on a surface.

The SE uses faux-Sanwa buttons and stick, which are of lesser quality. When the SE first came out, there were many quality control issues associated with it.

The two things I like about the SE are the artwork (I prefer it more than the artwork on the original TE). And its very modder-friendly, you can switch out the stick and buttons for real Sanwa.
