NeoGAF Arcade Stick Thread

i've got a couple full sanwa hraps, before i got them i was using low-end hori sticks for years, and while the sanwa buttons in particular feel much nicer, my execution was essentially the same when i'd try switching back and forth between the arcade-quality sticks and the cheap ones (mainly tested with hd remix, which is picky about inputs too). that was my experience anyway, take it as you will

the really substantive criticism of low-end sticks seems to be that the parts break under heavy use -- tons of people reporting that, though i guess i got lucky with my sticks. otherwise some of the criticism of low-end stuff seems exaggerated to me

which is better? the TE or TE 'S'? Does S stand for slimmer and lighter?
I want a heavy one that doesn't move around the coffee table. If both S and nonS weight is the same, looks like S is better looking.

The "S" is for slim. The sides.

The weight is still virtually the same.

Get the one you like :)

So with the upcoming release of MvC3 I'm looking into getting a arcade stick and was wondering if someone would be able to point me in the right direction. I'm not super hard core into fighters, but I would like to purchase something decent enough to last that would also feel/work well without having to replace anything. Browsing through the thread suggests this would probably suit my needs. Any thoughts?

rap3 ships with hori buttons -- can't comment firsthand on their durability since i swapped them out immediately, but they're really mushy compared to sanwas. best deal right now is probably one of the madcatz TEs using the coupon codes markman posted a couple pages back, those are full sanwa out of the box

Go with this one instead

BlazBlue: Continuum Shift Fightstick Tournament Limited Edition $99.03

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B003O1T008/?tag=neogaf0e-20

All Sanwa parts plus it's only a few bucks extra over the hrap. (You would end up paying more just to replace the Hrap buttons)

Hey I don't mind playing on an ex2, then again i'll play on just about anything.
Agreed. I tried it, its slightly mushy i agree, but its nothing i can't get used to.

People just love to make quick judgements without getting used to stuff, best example is people who are just getting a stick and opt to get an octagonal gate. Why not at least try to learn how to use the stick first?

Alright, I want someone to tell me that I'm not crazy.

I've ordered two sets of Seimitsu buttons from LizardLick so far... a set of PS-14-G snap-ins, and a set of PS-14-GN screw-ins. To me, both sets feel similar to one another, but different than the Seimitsu buttons that came pre-installed in my HRAP EX-SE. They also make a different sound when pressed. The ones in the EX-SE make a much louder sound (hard to describe, but I want to say "hollow"). Visually, they differ a bit as well; when installed, the black ring visible around the plunger is flat on the EX-SE's buttons, and rounded on the ones I ordered.

First off, can anyone else back me up on this? Second, I really like both the sound and feel on the EX-SE's buttons...does anyone know the *exact* model number of those buttons, or where I can order more (if more exist)?
That's really weird. EX-SE should have PS-14-G (and PS-14-D for Start and Back).
Though, the colors of the EX-SE are slightly different from the dye on standard ones they manufacture. Perhaps there are other differences. Maybe MarkMan knows?

how does one go about dual modding a te? like what are the steps?

I went through this just this week to be able to use my SF4 TE 360 stick on PS3. It was much easier than I thought.

The steps I went through were:

1. Investigate the process through various forums and Youtube videos.
2. Calculate the monetary and time cost for getting the materials and tools necessary.
3. Purchase PS3 Madcatz Blazblue TE stick at amazon for $99.

Sorry to be of absolutely nohelp.

Start with a common ground 360 PCB (the one that comes in a 360 TE will work), add on a board with PS3 support (such as the TEasy, MC or regular Cthulhu + IMP, Chimp, etc.). Some boards require no soldering (like the TEasy), some do (Cthulhu/Chimp).

I have a few sticks I want to sell... you guys are the primary audience. Should I post them here, or post in Buy/Sell/Trade and link to them from here?

I too am looking to get a new arcade stick for my fighters. I have been looking on eBay and I see a lot of Japanese Hori sticks
1) Will they work on an American x box?
2) Are they a good stick? like a 1-10 rating?
Thanks can’t wait for MvC3

I don't see why links wouldn't be allowed. It would be frowned on if you described the sticks you're sellling in the Stick Thread, for sure..

Last time I checked the Buy/Sell thread on NeoGAF I thought it was a mess!
That's one thing better on SRK. The Trading Post is much more organized and sellers are allowed to use title descriptions in their own separate posts. It isn't all jumbled up into one massive thread like it is on NeoGAF last time I checked some weeks back...

Without knowing what you're looking at, it's kind of hard to know what to recommend in what you saw.

Rule of thumb: Japanese joysticks DON'T have region coding/restrictions. You can use the same controller on US, Japanese, or European machines.

Rule of Thumb with respect to Hori: Not all 360 joysticks are created equal. Many of them have soldered in buttons, others don't. Joysticks may be 5-pin harness connect; many have 8-point connect points and don't have PCB's with the microswitches soldered into them. Again, it depends on the model.

Hori's are generally very reliable but most people would steer away from the smaller Fight Stick line. They're hard to modify to fit in quality parts and frankly the bases aren't as stable as larger joysticks. Those joysticks are awful on either PS3 or 360 and you're better off in the long run getting an HRAP model. I don't have a 360 myself but I've heard some bad things about some of the EX joysticks.
Best to check into the joysticks and see if they have REAL arcade parts out of the box -- that is are the joysticks Sanwa JLF or Seimitsu LS-32 (usually the 8-point connect version, not the PCB '-01' LS-32 with the 5-pin harness connect PCB), and, more importantly, does the stick base have Sanwa or Seimitsu buttons.
You generally save more in the long run getting a joystick with the quality parts (Sanwa or Seimitsu) to begin with. The crappy knock-off parts Hori and other vendors install in mass-produced low-end sticks just don't hold up well. You often have to drastically modify lower-end sticks with Dremels and files to fit in higher-quality arcade parts.

An example of a higher-quality Hori 360 joystick would be this one=> http://www.japanvideogames.com/Hori...ghting-Stick-For-360-p/xb360-873124002256.htm

I realized it was quite a bit louder than stock, but it wasn't until someone was playing on my stick beside me that made me realize just how loud the ls-32 is in a madcatz stick. It's actually kind of distracting.

Tell me about it. I have an LS-32 and PS-14-Gs installed in one of my TEs, and it's obnoxiously loud. That's one reason why I sometimes just prefer playing on my old custom, since the wood case dampens sound way better than these plastic/metal shells.

Wow...

I must be able to screen out the LS-32-01's clicking noise when I play games.
I've got LS-32-01's installed in TE and HRAP cases and I've never found it to be obnoxiously loud. People must be playing with very low sound coming off their TV sets.

I just don't understand that... If you play in competition, you ought to be too busy to really notice it unless the room you're playing in doesn't have tons of other people competing.

LS-32-01 clicking is nothing like a rock concert or jackhammer. Never quite understood the complaints about it!

If Seimitsu modded the stick to be as quiet as some people would want it, that would ruin the design. It would lose the qualities that make it a much better stick than the JLF in many instances.

First time posting on GAF, here goes.

Wow those sticks are amazing how much do you charge for something like that?
Also thanks for all the info, I just scored tekken 6 at gamestop for 16.99! I need an arcade stick bad!

Full customs start around $250 USD.

Prices get crazy depending on the species of wood, and whay systems it needs to be compatible with.

Realistically though the most expensive stick I built sold for $450.

Anyone have any opinions on the MK stick from the Kollector's Edition?
Getting a nostalgia itch, but do not want to let that itch lead me to a paper weight.

*Snip.

Got a website? I maybe in the market for a Dreamcast / Xbox 360 or a PS3 stick.

Awesome work btw.

LS-32 makes the prettiest sound in gaming. The louder the better, IMO.

Truth. =)

I'll post my stuff tomorrow most likely...thanks!

MatskaT, those sticks are awesome.

On one hand, I really want to preorder one of the MK sticks... on the other hand, I'm wondering if it's going to turn out like the Tekken6 collector's edition: way more supply than demand. You can find that bundle easily for $50-60 or less now, less than half of the original MSRP. Unless we hear that they'll be in very short supply, I'll probably do the "wait and see" thing.
I don't recall whether this was visible before, but now, you can see a low-res image of the stick's wiring:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004GD1Q2I/?tag=neogaf0e-20
Click the image for a closer look. I find it slightly humorous that there are no less than 18 screws securing the protective cover.

beautiful work, man. bravo.

So: as I've fallen totally in love with the small form factor and matte finish of the TvC stick, I'm now looking to get rid of a couple of its larger brethren. Pictures upon request.

Xbox 360 SFIV TE Round 2. 1-2 months old. It's been opened so the warranty is toast. Screws are in good (not perfect) shape. The Sanwa JLF has never been removed and has barely been used. The buttons had been replaced, but original Sanwa buttons have now been restored and it looks like new. It's been tested; all works fine. Cosmetically: excellent condition. It's in the original box and that's in great shape too. Asking $80 shipped.

PS3 Hori HRAP3. A few months old. It's been opened. Like the TE, the screws and nuts are in good (not perfect) shape. The barely-used Sanwa JLF was never removed. Currently, it's using 8 white MadCatz buttons that had come pre-installed in TvC sticks, which are IMHO better than the stock Hori buttons (I no longer have those). Also my opinion: they have the sensitivity of Sanwa buttons, but not the same feel. If you'd prefer, I'll remove these buttons and ship it to you buttonless. I don't have the original box, but will pack it well. Asking $60 shipped.

I can also sell you guys the by-products of my recent TvC stick modification projects: three SFIV SE FightSticks for Wii. Yes, you read that right. Two were originally for 360, one was originally for PS3...now they are for Wii (get the Mayflash adapter to also use them on PC or PS3). Two of them have TvC parts. To be honest, I don't expect any of you to want these, so I won't bore you with any more details here, but I'll provide more upon request, and sell them to you cheap if you want.

PM if interested. I'd like to think my asking prices are very reasonable but if you disagree let me know. I have lots of eBay feedback under the name yyr57695.

Heres Mines I just finished a couple weeks back.
Sanwa Buttons (Black/Blue)
Stock White and Joystick (couldn't get the plate off to get my Sanwa stick in)
Decals from Bandai Gundam Competition I was in @ Otakon 2010
Clear Blue Joystick Ball Top ^_^

Dude you made a stick of the Maxx... Props!!!

Also can anyone tell me the easiest way to go about dual modding a stick?
Is it better to start with a 360 stick or a ps3 one?

my wonderful gf is going to buy me some buttons.

Lizard Lick is out of the ones i want anyone know any other sites to buy them at a reasonable price ??

Lighting has a dramatic effect on color. Those are probably the MvC2 TEs
The picture looks like it's from the Capcom Fight Club/Playstation VGA viewing party. I went to it and can confirm they were using the MvC2 sticks.

I got my first arcade stick, this one:

http://www.hori.jp/items/detail.php?id=834

I know that it's not the best thing ever but I found it very cheap. The buttons have a really weird feel and I want to change them, are this buttons good for this arcade stick?:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SANWA-OBSF-30-ARCADE-BUTTON-WHITE-NEW-OBSF30-/370258671452?pt=UK_Video_Games_Coin_Operated_MJ&hash=item563522f75c

The stick feels ok, I'm not used to play with sticks so maybe I can't say if the stick is good or bad, but now that I'm going to change the buttons probably it's the time to change the stick if the one that comes with the arcade stick is bad. Should I change it?, for which one?.
