This is the final design for the Qanba Q4RAF

I'm really interested in getting it, but with plans to go to EVO this year I'm thinking to myself it's a really stupid idea to drop $167 on another stick when I already have 2 that work perfectly fine. I can't help it though, that thing looks sexy. Maybe not now or before EVO, but I definitely plan on getting this thing sometime this year.
I like the handle. reminds me of Gamecube. I'm not too fond of the stock art, though I'm sure it's replaceable.

Sorry for lack of replies to PMs/msgs in here :( I'll go through them this weekend (NOT TRAVELING, YES!)...

The FS VX I've had for a while, but went and bought the RAP VX-SA today. The button on both are the same, OBSF-30s, but the RAP's response feels so much better than the buttons I installed on the VX.

The game is just for scale.

Looks good.

But even better is the art on the regular edition of MVC3 in Japan. Man looks real good. Especially compared to what USA got.

I have a couple questions coming from a completely new person to arcade sticks on consoles/PCs.

First, I'd like to get into using one. I've always enjoyed fighting games in some limited way, mostly 2D ones like Capcom Vs SNK, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Super Street Fighter II, Street Fighter III 3rd Strike and even the recent Street Fighter IV. I've always been what I now know is referred to as a Shoto Scrub, heh. The characters always just made sense to me. I'm looking to grow, though. But if I do, I'd like to do it up right. Or at least right enough for my budget.

I've decided I want to pick up copies of Super Street Fighter IV and Marvel vs. Capcom 3 for the XBox 360 and I'll also want to pick up an accompanying arcade stick with it. I'd like to get the best one I can so I can feel the advantage I always read these sticks offer. My problem, though, is that I have a strict budget topping out at $100. It's my last semester of school, so I'll hopefully have money for more later, but for now, this is all I have to work with. Any ideas on where to shop and what to look for?

My second issue is that I've recently had an arcade stick come into my possession. It's a Street Fighter Anniversary Collection arcade stick that was made for the PS2 and XBox. It's in pristine condition, the box is like new and all the accompanying papers are in there too. So I can assume it's in good shape. I also tried it out and it'll work on my PS3 with a PS2->USB adapter I had lying around. Not on the 360, though.

Is this stick in any way a good one? It seems solid in construction, but I'm not so sure I like the stick mechanism itself and the plastic on it seems to be pretty poor, the seem between the top and bottom molding is disjointed. Can I use this stick for the PS3 in any serious way and are there still places I could find parts for it? I pretty much know nothing about this stuff. Oh yeah, and is there any way to (if this is a good base stick setup), swap out some type of controller board in the stick so it can function on the 360?

Thanks in advance for any help and I'm all ears.

Hey Everyone. I tried doing a search for this but failed and I thought this thread would be the have the people to ask. I'm trying to compile a list of non-Fighting Ps3 games that fight sticks work well for. I like fighting games but sometimes I just want to run around arcade style shooting shit. Currently I've been using my sticks to play:

Sega Genesis Collection
Turtles in Time ReShelled
Gundemonium Recollection
Tetris
Lumines
Söldner-X
R-Types
A bunch of ps/2 ShmUps

Thats basically what Ive been playing. I wish Sony required demos and at least videos for all their games. This would be a lot easier. Any advice on games or links to lists would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Most 2-D platformers should be fine for arcade sticks.

I've been using my arcade sticks (all-Japanese) with Earthworm Jim HD and it plays fine with them... (Too bad the HD edition is EASIER than the 16-bit original versions!)
People really shouldn't be saying the sticks don't work with platformers. (Arcade sticks are fine for 2D platformers; you really want to stay with analog pads for 3D platformers.) How do they think the original Super Mario Bros. game was played in the arcade???? For that matter, Donkey Kong and its sequels? People are just talking about things they haven't experienced and know nothing about again... as usual with most gamers under 30. Half these guys never played videogames outside of their home consoles.

I grew up with Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, and other games and I saw the graphics technology and control systems evolve. The PS1 DualShock 1 and N64 controllers weren't the first analog devices. The Odyssey 2 had analog joysticks, and both the arcade versions of Missile Command and Centipede used track balls (analogue) for directional controls. Sure the Odyssey 2 joysticks and track ball controllers have faded over time but they're a good examples of predecessor tech most people aren't aware of.

**********

The only semi-annoying thing I find about using arcade sticks with retro games is having to change the gate guards for 4-direction play action on certain games like Pac-Man. Again, even that works well with current sticks. There's a lot of naysaying and I wonder WHO these people are and IF they've even tried to play anything but fighting games with arcade sticks!

For retrogames, you can always look them up by title online and see what the original arcade cabinet's controller set-up was like and adjust joystick settings and button useage to match. Most games before Street Fighter II, didn't use more than 2-3 buttons, tops. With SFII, arcade machines had to be altered so that six pushbuttons could be used. Before that, the max was often 4 buttons (which SNK stuck to) but a wire harness mod changed that and at least in the Capcom fighting game world 6-buttons became standard...

I really enjoyed playing Crescent Pale Mist with an arcade stick, right up until I realized I needed R3. Then I stopped playing and haven't go back since.

Whilst stick is better than pad for this game I didn't like getting used to 7 face buttons, Dash/Stationary/Strafe. . . you often have to hold one button and press another or more. With a pad Triggers and bumpers it's alright. . . on a stick, I just gave up and deleted the demo. Game was boring too.

That's an awesome way to play some Zero 3!

Related to the earlier post, the Scott Pilgrim game plays really well on an arcade stick. So much so that I can't bring myself to go back to playing it on a pad. In a similar vein, Castle Crashers would be great with a stick as well.

He's playing Zero 1.

Man I still have to get a Go. I already have a Genki Rockets themed axisdapter stick lying around somewhere.

Alright fighting game gaf, need some advice. Girlfriend got me a blue ball top for my stick since I mentioned being unsure which I'd like better. Worth noting, the yellow top hides the white circle better and it's got a mesh design (webcam sucked at showing it though) which I think is kinda neat. However I think the blue matches the stick better

Yellow ball top looks cool, but as the previous poster mentioned, the symmetry with the blue top and blue edge buttons is nice. Go with blue!

I personally think that stick buttons look best when they match the case colour, but from those two I'd probably use blue balltop I guess.

The RB button (h.k) has stopped working on my SE, so that means I can't play American either as it's l.k when playing like that. I've no money until next month so I can't replace the parts.

I'd found SF Anniversary Collection for £5 just last week too. FUUUU

Quickest thing you can do is switch the quick disconnect on RB with one of the buttons on the 4th column, then set it through button config.

So I noticed it's pretty damn hard to find an arcade stick to purchase in Canada. Anyone know the best/cheapest spot for a Canuck to get his hands on a worthwhile arcade stick?

Is there a summery post anywhere about average to good pads to buy? wit MK9 coming out i'm finally wanting to buy a stick but I have little idea on what is good and what is not.

I have two fight pads but as cool as they are, they are not sticks!

If you got the cash. Mad Catz Tournament Edition Fight Stick. If Not The Standard Edition instead you could mod it later with better parts.

i think the only off the shelf sticks that are any good are the madcatz and hori's real arcade pro series if you can live with hori buttons.

hm ok thanks for the info both of you, what's the difference between hori and mad catz buttons? I take it one of them is softer?

Mad Catz TE, HRAP-SE, HRAP-SA: Arcade grade buttons and joystick
HRAP: Arcade grade joystick, knock off buttons that are okayish
Mad Catz SE: knock off parts that are inaccurate/break quickly, replace as soon as you can

In general, the knock off buttons feel smushier (longer travel) than arcade-grade parts and are just less durable.

Average-good options, IMO, are...

Budget = Mad Catz SE for ~$30, replace the parts with arcade-grade stuff when you get the chance.
High end = Mad Catz TE for ~$100, HRAP for ~$80, HRAP-SE or SA for ~$100.

What system do you plan to use this stick with?

its a little hard to describe, i've got hori buttons here and sanwa buttons (madcatz uses hori in their TE sticks) and the hori buttons have more up and down travel, and feel a little stiffer. the sanwa feel more sensitive and depress more easily. the sanwa ones may last longer too but i haven't had any buttons fail on me

IMHO. I like Yellow bezel if you're going with that color scheme. Also you can either get a blue or yellow dust cover set or a clear one (I rock the clear to show off the artwork).

Here's a pic of mine:

BTW your shaft cover is on upside down.

Thinking of picking up a Blazblue stick from the Aksys store while they're doing the Japan Relief sale, and I have a few questions.

1. I don't really know anything about sticks though (as I mentioned in this thread recently): are these pretty good? The shape seems a little odd.
2. Is the artwork on it easily moddable (from the pics it just looks like you have to undo some screws and you can swap it out)?
3. If I get the 360 one, how easy is it to convert for use on a PC? Would it ever be usable on a PS3, either with an adapter or a mod or something like that? I seem to remember checking out stick parts a few years ago and seeing that when you're building from scratch, at least, there were different little chips or something that you had to buy for whatever console you wanted to use it on, so it seems like you'd be able to switch those out with some soldering and such (again, I'm a real amateur, and I'm just working off of what's probably a faulty memory from years ago).

I'll be honest, I prefer the white bezel just because of the white section where the guide buttons are. I find it works better. Not that yours looks worse or anything of course. Just personal preference.

I'll fix the shaft cover, thanks for the heads up.

1) yes, they're good. They're just differently colored TEs with different artwork.
2) yes, it can be changed pretty easily, and there are places where you can even get plexi cut for it.
3) 360 sticks work on windows pretty much out of the box: just plug it in and it'll load the driver and work. Modding it to be playable on a PS3 just requires a little time, scissors and a screwdriver or two to install a ChimpSMD into (no soldering required!). If you plan on modding one for use on both systems absolutely get a 360 stick since modding a PS3 to 360 takes more work.

the chimpsmd doesn't require soldering? i thought it did, at least for the usb cable if nothing else

Arcade stick newb here. I'm interested in getting a stick so I can start learning to play MVC3 proper. I heard the SE is a good, cheap alternative to the TE once the parts are replaced but I can't find one anywhere, much less for $30. My only option seems to be a TE for $160+. Where are you seeing either of these sticks for the prices you're stating?

MadCatz does not use Hori buttons in their TE sticks or elsewhere. The TE sticks contain only Sanwa parts (both lever and buttons), and the SE sticks use only MadCatz parts. You will only find Hori buttons pre-installed in Hori sticks.

Happy Phantom: I'm partial (biased, even) towards blue. I think a blue bezel would work well, too! =) If you look at MarkMan's stick, you'll notice that the bezel and balltop both match the last column of buttons. To use blue for the balltop and bezel would essentially give you the same thing, colors inverted...if that's the way you want to do it.

grap3fruitman: the SE sticks have been discontinued for a while, and most vendors have run out of stock... which is why you can't find them so cheap any more. The WWE All-Stars Brawl sticks, which are essentially improved versions of the SE sticks (better stock parts) are releasing soon, but they will be $80 for a while. The only budget (<$50) options right now are Hori's inexpensive Fighting Stick models, and it looks like even those may have been discontinued... yikes. The Hori budget sticks are not easily moddable, and are generally not recommended if you're going to use them frequently, but they may tide you over until better options are available.

One other choice: I never sold the 360 Round 2 TE (asking $80) or PS3 HRAP3 ($70) that I was looking to sell, so if you (or anyone) is interested you can PM me. Both are barely used. The TE is stock (but was opened); the HRAP3 has white MadCatz TvC buttons instead of Hori.

TE sticks often go on sale for those prices through Madcatz's online store. Look for promos during major tourneys.

Nope, there are posts on either side of the board to screw the cable ends into, one going to the 360 board and one to the rest of the USB cable. I actually gave a brief description of how to do the whole thing in this post.

What are my options right now? Is their store the only place that even carries the sticks? I don't see them anywhere else. I was hoping to get one soon so that I could play casuals at a Chicago tourney at the end of May. =(

Prepping way in advance here, but does anyone know what the best thing for me to do is if I want to come back from E3 2011 with a RAP EX? Anywhere in the LA area I can buy one? I want to get one when I'm there as they don't sell 'em here in the UK and the shipping is insane compared to the charge I'd have to pay to bring it back with me, which is minimal.

Some Gamestops will carry them. I also know that the Microcenter on Elston Ave just NW of downtown Chicago had a TE stick on shelves two weeks ago. I don't really see it flying off the shelves there.

Is anyone here selling one of their sticks? I'd like to get one, but I'm also feeling a little impatient waiting for a tournament that'll spawn a sale of these at the official store. Especially since I have no idea when the next tournament of this caliber takes place.

What's the difference between the TE and the TE S? I just got home from Fry's with the Chun Li stick and I'm not sure whether I should open it.
The TES has a revised PCB and the lock switch locks the guide/home button too.

_dementia: I thought it was... the regular TE's lock switch prevents turbo/guide from activating, but the TE-S can lock turbo/guide and sel/back/start, no?

grap3fruitman said:
Is one better than the other?
Supposedly the TE-S's revised PCB is more reliable and the updated lock switch is nice. Though some people don't like the TE-S's lack of bezel and the slightly slimmer size.

It's all up to personal preference. Both play essentially the same since they have identical Sanwa parts.
