NeoGAF Games of the Year 2016 Awards

With all the incredible games that released this year y'all picked UC4 as the best? Really? Uggh. I don't think I've ever disagreed with the top pick so much. Doom and Overwatch are just both leagues better imo. Not to mention the other fantastic games that came this year and yet the largest by far was UC4?!? I just do not understand.

I think Uncharted 4 is a remarkably average game with crippling pacing issues, but that's a fine list in my opinion otherwise.

Really glad Hitman made it into the top 10.

I kinda agree with it being an average game, maybe slightly above, but I felt compelled to recognize it for its technical achievements, writing, and overall narrative craftsmanship. The latter two being areas where too many games crash and burn. Not my GOTY but deserves a top 10 spot no question.

Agreed on all counts. A vote that will be seen better in hindsight as being flawed.

Cool dudes and dudettes detected!

And the games recommended for me (well, just top 5):
1. [PS4] The Last Guardian (Adventure) = 22 points
2. [XB1][PS4] Doom (FPS) = 15 points
3. [PS4] Uncharted 4: A Thief's End (Adventure) = 12 points
4. [XB1][PS4][PC] Titanfall 2 (FPS) = 6 points
5. [XB1][PS4] Overwatch (FPS) = 5 points

Doom I own but haven't played yet (bought over the holiday sale). Still need to play UC4. I did a free weekend of Overwatch, which was fun, but not totally for me. I'm going to avoid TLG because I think it'll tug too strongly on heartstrings. TF2 might be fun.

Thanks for running these awards, it's always a ton of fun.

Are you me? Came here to post basically the same thing. Hitman should still be higher though. More of GAF needs to play it.

As others have mentioned all of those games won a lot of awards outside gaf also

Maybe Sony just makes really good games?

2011 is a really good example of the Sony slant. Uncharted 3 is not looked back on very kindly, in fact a lot of people feel it's the worst in the franchise.

Yet somehow it finished a head of Gears of war 3, Bastion (360 exclusive at the time), Witcher 2 (PC/360 exclusive), Xenoblade, Dead Space 2, and Saints Row the 3rd.

There's multiple games people consider "classics" from that year, Uncharted 3 isn't one of them.

Considering 5 of the years took place last-gen, with Sony taking 3 of the 5 years I guess there weren't more 360 fans than Sony on here even though the 360 was selling better.

The 360 slowed right down about halfway through the gen, whereas PS3 got really great. Doesn't really prove or disprove anything. And Uncharted 2, Journey and TLoU were wildly considered those years GOTY, so not too surprising.

What is with the Rocket League being the #1 XB1 game? Shouldn't it havd been Forza Horizon 3 going by the points? Something is really off about the super low point tabulation for the remaining MS data too.

When's the last time Microsoft made a GOTY worthy game? Nintendo has won GOTY and they make great stuff. All the Sony GOTY winners were critical winners as well.
This really got me thinking. Most of my favorite Xbox games over the years have been third-party. I think Gears 1 is probably the last Microsoft-published game that would have made my Top 5 in any year. But...I've never been a Halo fan either.

They published Mark of the Ninja.
Oh, right. This is my answer.

I'm kind of surprised people thought anything else would win.

Last year we voted in Bloodborne (23 critic, 8 reader GOTYs) over The Witcher 3 (169 critic, 88 reader GOTYs).

The prediction formula has been "Biggest Sony Exclusive, unless they're all bad, at which point Biggest Nintendo Exclusive" for half a decade now.

This year should be Horizon, unless it gets a poor reception, at which point it will be Zelda. Edit: AniHawk reminded me that Persona 5 is PlayStation exclusive. It will actually be that.

Next year will be TLOU 2 unless it gets delayed, otherwise God of War.

LOL at people being upset that A lot of Sony games made the list. Can it just be the their games are very good, and better than others? lol people are super delusional sometimes

I agree that UC3 was disappointing (I would go further than that and say it's actually a bad game) and several of those games (Gears 3, Witcher 2, and DS2) were far better, but that's one example of bias from 5 years ago. UC4, Bloodborne, TLOU, etc all deserve their praise IMO

Edit: that said Bloodborne over The Witcher 3 I definitely don't agree with, but it's still an absolutely fantastic game

Uncharted 4 is the King's Speech of GOTY awards for me; an amazing, brilliantly crafted game which was let down in my eyes as I personally felt that other games did more to advance the medium (either by creating new worlds in Overwatch, my personal GOTY, or creating new experiences in The Last Guardian, my personal No.2) and create a lasting impression. It's why my list had it at number 5, that and I didn't have as much personal stake in Nate's last adventure as many others here.

The only one that I vehemently disagree with is INSIDE. I felt it relied too much on style which, despite being way too short for the price, made the game both boring and tedious to play. I put it as an honorable mention solely down to the technical aspects of one crucial scene (anyone whose played it will know what I'm talking about). I'm tempted to give it a replay and make an RTTP thread just so I can make my thoughts clear.

Now, despite all the relative negativity above, 2016 was an amazing year for games and everything else on that list outside of INSIDE I agree with being there. If I were to make any changes to my own personal list it would be to replace something (likely R&C) in order to put HITMAN at around the No.5 or 6 mark because damn that is one of the best stealth game's I've played in years.

Also great job to everyone involved!

Xenoblade is higher if you count all the years it released, it released at a different year in every region

i think next year might be zelda in fierce competition with persona 5. judging by early reception and the history here, mario odyssey and zelda both might be fighting for a #1 spot - although i personally believe mario odyssey lacks the spectacle that made galaxy #1 here.

Yeah after Bloodborne beating Witcher last year nothing should be surprising about UC4 winning. And yeah I also am inclined to agree we will likely see a Sony exclusive winning the next 2 years as well. Zelda may throw a wrench into that or possibly Red Dead 2 but yeah Sony exclusives are the go to safe bet

Recommendations
1. [XB1][PS4][PC] Titanfall 2 (FPS) = 9 points, 1 honorable mention (Played it and Beated it at the begining of 2017, good game, overhyped a bit by GAF)

3. [XB1][PS4][PC] The Witness (Puzzle) = 6 points (*rages* Yes I have played it and beat it, but never again shall I speak about it)
4. [PS4] Ratchet & Clank (Platform) = 5 points, 2 honorable mentions (Played it and own it)

7. [XB1][PC] Gears of War 4 (Shooter) = 2 points (Don't have an Xbox/capable PC)

13. [PS4] Mirror's Edge Catalyst (Adventure) = 1 point (Yep I played it, what big dissapointment it was)

Oh right, Persona 5 is also technically exclusive. That will definitely win given the regular vote combined with the Sony vote.

I think you may be wrong about Horizon, the fact that both Persona 5 and Zelda beat it in the Most Anticipated awards and the many people (including myself) who thought it would, to even a small extent, fail either critically, commercially or both shows that it's not got the same "massive Sony exclusive" factor as something like UC4 did. I'd put decent money on Persona 5 and Zelda duking it out at the start of 2018.

TLOU2 though, that's a shoe-in for GOTY if I ever saw one.

EDIT:

Oh yeah; Persona 5 is much more likely then, especially considering how close it got to beating Zelda in most anticipated.

Infamous Second Son was 2014 and that was #13 of that year with a MC of 80. (Which I'm sure you would agree isn't shitting the bed.)

Lol I'm loving a mod being so bluntly honest about it
Why can't this just be yet another one of those salt posts? Just because a red name posted it? Everyone has biases and I'm sure Nirolak would've liked it more if Overwatch would've been more universally loved on this forum.

Some publishers are better than others to target this specific ever dwindling and not that important audience. That's the answer.

Yeah. Persona will win because it's a Sony exclusive. Because if it were multi platform people would go NOPE NOT MY GOTY.

What a joke. I hope people don't actually believe that.

Agreed on all counts. A vote that will be seen better in hindsight as being flawed.

The weird part is that I remember discussing how a number of games not named Uncharted were vying for the lead the last time I read the voting thread. Clearly there was a massive upswell in UC4 support late in the game.

Speaking as someone who considers themselves an Uncharted fan, I thought UC4 was overwhelmingly mediocre and felt like a huge disappointment Die to a bizzare tonal shift for the series along with severe pacing issues and what felt like a very jarring disjointed narrative. there were just so many other games I had so much more fun with I just can't imagine why so many would choose this over the others.

In the future we will look back at this list and say "That was the year Doom/Overwatch was robbed."

Doesn't change the fact that Neogaf is predominantly a Sony fan base, so the result was predictable. I never played UC4, but from what most people say, it plays far too safe. It's the fourth iteration of the series and apparently does absolutely nothing new from the previous games, and is considered slower and weaker story-wise from its predecessors. No game should win game of the year for that, regardless of how beautiful it is. Overwatch should have won for no other reason than it is a brand new IP that became an instant smash hit. You have subjectivity, and then you have hard fact.

Not hurt, just humored.

Fun fact #2 - I didn't play any other game from the TOP 10

This is nonsense. Bloodborne won because it was a brilliant and fresh take on the Souls formula, which the Gaf demo loves, not because it was a Sony exclusive. If Sony money hatted Witcher 3 it still would have gotten crushed.

No there wasn't.

We know that because that is tracked.

Ding ding ding. Exactly right.

My guess is the Top 5 will be some mixture of

- Persona 5
- Zelda: BOTW
- Horizon
- Mario Odyssey
- RDR2 if it comes out, otherwise... ???

I think people definitely believe there is a current Sony slant. I'm not sure how that is even debatable. Look at last year's results. Witcher 3 was one of the most overwhelming GOTY in the history of the industry and GAF voted Bloodborne over it.

I mean people shouldn't feel bad about it, Sony is riding high right now. And they make dope games. That still doesn't mean there isn't a bit of a built in bias around it, which again makes sense given install base differences.

Uncharted 4 is well deserved. Honestly I think every game on the Top 10 is pretty well deserved. 2016 had a lot of quality games and it showed.

It's a very good game, but a racing game isn't going to win GOTY any more than the yearly excellence MLB the Show.
Yeah, I totally get that because racing games are teetering on the brink of mainstream relevance, but "GOTY-worthy" was the point. I think you could make the case on that front.
