NeoGAF should attach genre tags on users

Would NeoGAF be a better place of users had genre preferences attached to their tag?

  • Yes, this is a good idea and should be implemented ASAP

  • This is a good idea but too difficult o implement effectively

  • This is a bad idea because…

I think it would actually lead to fewer toxic conversations because it more effectively displays a users area of preference.

For example, I think Astro Bot sucks, but I’m not a fan of any 3D platformers post Mario 64. If someone is a fan of modern 3D playgoers they would more quickly understand my stance and only engage with me if they saw a value in it.

Humans are crazy good at distinguishing between different faces because reputation was vital in our survival. It lead to less toxic interactions over thousands of years.
You just want to have the "gass" tag so you get to have your opinions seem to have more weight that anyone else's. :lollipop_tongue:

What about I have no genre AT ALL and don't want to be categorized and stay free from everything, are we on Shitiera ?

That only works if people are devoted to genres instead of individual games. I like SOME JRPGs, but not all. Even in the same series, I have some games I really like and some that are just okay. Not everyone's gaming tastes fit into neat little boxes. =P

Even if they did though, what would be the benefit to the forum? Tags would only remove all nuance from discuasions and give pedants ammo for strawman arguments.

Does reputation, history, and shared preferences “remove all nuance from discussion” in real life, or does it add nuance? I think it’s clearly the latter.

We often hear that people should pay attention to reviewers whose taste aligns with our own. Nobody seems to disagree with that. Why then would it be unreasonable to assign a similar designation to users?

Games are too complex now to be understood by the masses. It’s not 1996 anymore. As the depth and complexity grows, opinions from “outsiders” naturally diminishes in value.

Except that the history and shared preferences you are proposing are entirely surface level, hence the lack of nuance. Again, whatever the intention, the only function would be to equip pedants with "basically the same" gotchas. It's the kind of shallow, tribal thinking that makes fanboys vote for games they haven't played in GotY discussions or would inspire a madman to shill for a corpo-centric, monetization-driven movement like GaaS.

What you are asking for is better served by community threads where people of similar tastes can get together to discuss whatever without having others try to gatekeep their opinion because "You're just a JRPG-loving weeb," etc. We get enough of that with profile pics.

Holy shit, signatures. I'd forgot all about them. What old Forum was it you could have them? Forum planet, GameFaqs?

I had a killer Desert Combat one :messenger_tears_of_joy:
many forums still have them (beast's lair for one) and they're as obnoxious and soulful as ever.

sometimes it's hard to tell the difference between the post and the signature on some sites. But I wouldn't have them any other way. Feels like something's missing without them here.

Ar¢tos Ar¢tos Exhibit A; notice the custom member description. Whores also have no shame and are quite proud of their utility in society.

TintoConCasera TintoConCasera also displays this whore behavior proudly in the same fashion.
I don't know what the fuck you guys are talking about, but I know one thing for sure.

None of you could ever afford this hee-hoe. :messenger_sunglasses:

We're talking about whores and your custom member description about sex dolls being used. Classic whore behavior 🫦 GENRE CREATED.

I think we should tag frogposters as well, better to keep those under control. 👀

I've never even heard of that forum, I'm a bit of an old fart and just post here these days. My multiple forum days are over

I'll have a look though, I need to see em for old times sake.

Mine was a pure obnoxious M1 Abrams with a few added silhouettes of soldiers added with an Apache overhead. Very war, pure rad and not at all hammered together in Paintshop Pro on a drunken friday night :messenger_sunglasses:

👀

I wouldnt mind them here, nothing major, just something to dust off my paint skills I used to pretend I had.

I don't really care about genres though. I have my preferences like anyone, but I just like good games regardless of genre.

How would quickly identifying a users preference / experience with a genre remove nuance from conversation? I’m failing to see how you come to that conclusion.

Many of us are fans of 6 or more genres. You're proposing to cram all those genre labels into the tiny box under our names? It would be a mess. I love GAF's clean, simple presentation. Let's keep it that way.

I don't think looking at a list of preferred genres is a good way to assess an opinion anyhow. Seems like you're looking for a reason to disqualify someone's opinion because they don't have the appropriate genre tag. I think it's better to evaluate the worth of an opinion by the reasons the person gives for holding it and the way they communicate.

“Madden 24 sucks”

That statement has wildly different meaning depending on if a sports gamers says it or if a JRPG fan says it.

NeoGAF is filled with similar comments about all types of games from all types of gamers. Wouldn’t it be more useful if we saw the genre preferences of people after reading their impressions of a given game?
I get offended by xbox /Playstation /Nintendo /pc haters equally, and now I started defending mobile. I play all genres, I admit that I'm biased towards fps, RPG, platformer, sim, Strategy, racing, survival horror, action adventure, puzzle etc..., I don't look at metacritics on these genres cause they're part of who I am and there's nothing wrong with that.

I would prefer, and recently posted in Gaf+ about, a system like Reddit Enhancement Suite has where you can tag users yourself. Useful for reminding yourself of lots of things.
