NeoGAF's "Let's Watch Anime" OT15: Now Watching - Shiki "Corpse Demon"

Episode 6

Pieces are finally starting to come together for everyone, so that's good. Time to see how they all respond. And maybe I'm giving her too much leeway, but Sunako actually doesn't seem too evil, maybe it's just her family? Or maybe I'm getting tricked.

Damn, I have to say it's pretty difficult to not want to watch ahead. These cliffhangers are pretty damn good at what they do.

Did I already mention how great the OP is? Because it's fucking great.
I love how completely out there it.

Yeap I absolutely loved watching it every time, does very well at setting the tone and telling the audience what kind of show it is.

I usually avoid openings to avoid spoilers in series like this. But the tune was just so good.

Lots of explanations about how all this works from Masaos viewpoint. Was more or less how I thought it would be. Toshio dropped the truth bomb on Seishin, I'm curious if their nightwatch will bear fruit. Natsuno and company are going to dig up Megumis grave. I have a feeling that it won't go as smoothly as they hope, considering Nekomimi-guy overheard their plans.

Ah, they are finally starting to piece it together slowly, but how are they gonna stop it. Megumi is one pissed off vampire right now, lol.

Cornbread78

Oh man, everyone is finally figuring it all out! Megumi's grave us gonna get dug up as well! I can't wait to see how they defend themselves going forward!

Episode 8

Goddamn creepy ventriloquist dolls. At least Natsuno's group has confirmed it now, but they really should start talking to the adults soon. Seishin himself seems a bit shocked that Sunako is probably a vampire though, hope he doesn't preemptively try anything that might screw everything up.

Episode 8

That went smoother than I thought, with them actually opening an empty coffin. The surprise attack of that one Undead was also handled rather easily and essentially confirmed their suspicions. But damn, Natsuno is hardcore.
And that girl at the end was not normal. That cliffhanger.

Natsu is about to get all fucked up by little creepy girl. It didn't take the monsters long to fight back either. Next episode is gonna be gud!

Couldn't watch for the last few days, so I need to catch up.
Anyway, I was right about everything and the reveal was executed very well, so was the scene with the little girl.
The entire episode was directed very well in general.
Looks like the girl is the cause for all of this or at the very least, she is related to it.

Episode 9

I didn't realize until the end of the episode that last episodes cliffhanger wasn't even touched upon, lol. Time just flew by. Toshio is a great character. I'm really curious where this will lead considering we're not even halfway and yet many characters are already in the know. Very intriguing.

Episode 9

So everything is out in the open now, now time to see how Toshio and Seishin react going forward. It's kind of weird that they didn't really bring any kind of weapons to defend themselves against the second visit, after they had already confirmed it though.

And what happened to Natsuno?

Episode 10

Damn Tatsumi is a sadist. Tooru, noooo. You know, I'm pretty sure DTL would like this show, haha. But now I'm really curious what's going to happen. I have no idea. Will Natsuno somehow avoid becoming a vampire? What's he going to do?
This show is so good.

Episode 10

Oh damn, that fucking cliffhanger. It's nice to see that there are at least some vampires that retain their humanity and regret after converting, which makes me think Tooru might be acting in a way to protect Natsuno. It does take multiple bites to kill someone, after all.

Tatsumi is an asshole though, goddamn.

That way quite the interesting development.
I really want to know what happens next, there are just so many possible outcomes.

So the bad guys definately know the the doctor knows, so they are after his ass. No way to hide in the clinic now, since the blue haired guy can basically do anything he wants...

Episode 11

Toshio is possessed by his work. Seishin sure has balls of steel confronting Sunako like that. Redhair grandma has the right idea, but her way of doing things backfired hard as expected. No Natsuno this episode, arghhhhh.

Episode 11

Natsuno cliffhanger went nowhere, how frustrating. On the other hand, Toshio is clearly scheming something, but can't openly announce anything without proof, or else he'd be grouped with the crazy old lady. I don't quite know how to feel about Seishin. I have a feeling he might end up siding with the vampires willingly, or at least not taking as hard of a stance as Toshio against.

I watched this anime years ago on hulu, the weirdness of it attracted me. I'm going to enjoy reading your reactions for the second half of the series, it gets real crazy real fast.

Well, the crazy woman wasn't too far of, but it seems that things are a bit more complicated.
Some of them either aren't vampires at all or thier weakness don't affect them for some reason.

New opening and ending! I think I like the first OP better, but maybe it will grow on me.
Damn you, Natsunos dad! Gaaaah, do you want to see your son dead so much?
Doesn't look good for him at the end of the episode. Will he die? Or will Tooru let him off?
And yes, DTL would very much like this.

Yeah it was that second half of the series that killed my enthusiasm, however it could go the other way for some here with how far off the deep end it falls.

The second OP feels like a huge downgrade to me :<

The second opening is why I hate anime sometimes. It's like they completely changed direction halfway through the series and the OP reflects that.

Natsuno's still the best tho.

Heh, abtly named.

I gotta catch up here.... Yuuuki-kun!!! Dude got straight up punked. He should have known to stay inside, but nope.... idiocy happened!

Episode 12

So the cliffhanger for Natsuno continues. I can't fault his dad for not believing in what seemingly is a superstition, but goddamn if the results of it probably will end up getting his son killed.

Cornbread78

Well, the old lady tried and now she will become one of them.... damn fool..

Still not sure what the doctors problem is though... He obviously hasn't been bitten, but he helping them now? Also, Yuuki-kun? What ended up happening with his bitten bad self?

Cornbread78

No, not Yuuki's mom as well!!!

Well, the kids keep trying, but nobody believes them. It's a shame that Yuuki and his mom are going to die soon... Kauri is next as well...

Damn, despair, despair, despair for everyone. Poor Yuuki is dead, the doctor's wife us dead, Yuuki's mom , Koari's mom.... almost everyone now. We still don't know what happened to the doctor either that put him in the current state.

I knew it. Fuck you, Natsunos dad. Everything he does makes everything worse. But now I'm curious what's going to happen after Natsuno inevitably revives. Is he going to fight against them?
And oh boy, Toshio caught the Mad Scientiest virus. He's going to experiment on his dead wife if she revives, isn't he

Well, isn't doing that great, is he?
This episode really highlights how much the events impacted him.
While it was shocking, it doesn't feel unnatural after all the shit he had to endure.

Welp, there it is. Toshio has now gone off the deep end. What next, I wonder?

Time to hunt some wabbits.

I just can't process how Toshio thinks. Yeah, let me show my bloody wife to my best friend, that will bring us closer together!

Episode 14

Holy shit. Toshio the absolute fucking madman. Like wow. I mean I expected him to try experimenting on his wife, but I did not expect him to be this thorough. Damn. That was brutal and yet I couldn't look away.
And there's no way Natsuno was cremated. I wonder when he's going to show up again.
And lol at the outfit of the Kirishiki lady. Very… eccentric.

Episode 15

Wow, that funeral was embarassing. Way to go Funeral Home. Tatsumi told them off for it though. And major truthbomb, he's a werewolf. …Which shouldn't actually be surprising when you consider his hair, but alas…
Toshios mum is such an entitled selfish bitch, wow.
Natsuno is baaaaaack. I'm very curious what's he going to do.

Episode 15

Natsuno is back, but not a shiki? He didn't have the eyes or anything. I'm worrying about the growing rift between Toshio and Seishin, there doesn't seem to be a way they can both reconcile from this.

The scene at the office completely staffed with shiki was pretty shocking. Sucks to be Toshio, especially since the few people he did try to tell outright didn't believe him.

Damn, the doctor has completely lost his mind. Tgat whole operating room scene was disturbing as hell. I mean, his wife tries to talk, so he duck tapes her mouth shut so he can continue the experiments.....

She was a shiki and all, but damn..

I see Cornbread didn't account for these episodes. They really add something to the last part of the show and should be watched during it.

As the name suggests these specials take place between two episodes. So 20.5 takes place after 20 and before 21, likewise 21.5 takes place after 21 and before 22.

Thought I would get that out of the way in advance for those still with us. Should have been part of regular broadcast, but maybe there were some production problems. Considering the fast pace in the second half of Shiki, it ain't that strange.

Anyway keep that in mind. The specials have the same length as the regular episodes.

Yes, yes it has. The doctor is definately mad in the head now...

Yuuki is alive!

Poor doc is all alone in his knowledge of the Shiki because the villagers are all too bone headed! Hopefully Yuuki and the doc join forces to kill all the Shiki out there!

Episode 16

Sunako backstory was nice, as well as showing a more personal side to the rest of the shikis. Still a bunch of monsters though. What's interesting is that Natsuno is a shiki, but is out in the day. I guess he's a higher tier one, like the Kirishiki dad?

Fucking cliffhanger on Akira though, goddamn.

Episode 16

Tatsumi is such a sadist. RIP Akira. And just when I questioned wether or not Natsuno actually became a Shiki, he confirms it himself. But somethings definitely special with him, seeing how he can operate during the day.
Sunako backstory was interesting.

Episode 17

Akiras sister breaking down, Seishin making his choice, Toshio finally got caught by them as well as Ritsuko, Natsuno still on the loose, but Tatsumi knows about him. This episode also finally had some slight creepiness again, which I felt has been somewhat lacking for a while now.
Yeah, I have no clue what is going to happen next.

Episode 17

Holy shit, everything is happening. Jeez, with almost everyone left being wrecked or joining this episode, I wonder where to go from here? At least Natsuno is still out and about.

I've been rewatching this along with everyone else. It's been what, 6yrs? and that scene from E14 is still seared into my brain. Powerful stuff.
