Neon - the Minter XBOX visualisation now with Video

So this is shipped with every Xbox 360 as part of the dashboard right? You can activate it whenever you listen to music using X360, and it's not a game - just pretty images to watch while music plays. Unity had gameplay elements - this doesn't (as far as I know).

you can use the controllers to alter the images, each pad does something different or something

Although the MTV unveiling kind of deflated my interest in the system, this is something that would keep me interested even if it's only out of my interest in supporting Jeff Minter.

LAMA! :D

there are no words.

looks nice. I wish they'd cut the length on that video and made it more detailed/higer rezed.

It's a light synthesiser or Lightsynth. You can use it like any other by just letting it do it's thing to the music but to really make it come alive you need to control the input, along with up to 3 others using the wireless controllers. It's mostly of interest to stoners, tech geeks and art types of which I am at least 2. It's in the dashboard and is a pretty cool feature that Microsoft deserves a lot of credit for thinking of and including.

This is going to look amazing in HD. Time to get back to work on that 6 foot bong I've wanted to build since I was 15.

It's not like I'm saying that I would only buy the machine for the VLM. I'm waiting for E3 to prove to me that the system is viable. I'm just saying that the VLM is one of those things that might sell me on the console.

He quit Unity to make a fucking visualizer?

Fuck that.

The decision to quit Unity was made before the Neon work came along. Plus, check out Unity's page at the new Llamasoft website - maybe it wasn't a total bust after all...

Hum. I can't find Unity's page anymore... I'm sure I saw it yesterday. Very sure.

Jebus! The d/l speed is soooo slow for that big vid. Why doesn't Minter get with the times and encode that shit with Divx or Xvid? Can someone reencode this bitch on either of those formats? Arrrgh.

Is this visualization exclusive?

On consoles, yes....
How much money do I have to raise in order to release Minter from this contract?

Wasn't there a pretty similar thing for Atari Jaguar?

VLM aka Virtual Light Machine, and the best damn thing about the JagCD.

The is a VLM 2 in the Nuon dvd players.

But I'm still pissed that he didn't have "time" for Untiy and then this shows up. Guess the paycheck was hard to resist.

Wasn't it that Lionhead got fed up with funding the development and since no-one was going to publish Unity for the GameCube they called it a day, not necessarily that he didn't have "time" (what do you mean by "time", since you're obviously referring to something else with those inverted commas)? I'm sure if Nintendo had stepped up to the plate and made an offer Jeff Minter would be all over it like a pig in shit, but in the end it was Microsoft who came up with the goods so we're getting something similar yet different out-of-the-box in every single X360 console. I know I'm happy with the current scenario.

I not sure if anyone has really given an offical reason, but I doubt that Jeff "dumped" a project that he worked hard on for two years that gave him almost complete freedom for bigger cash. I think BuG's post is largely the truth--who was willing to publish a niche game as an exclusive at this time in the GC's life outside of Nintendo themselves?

My brother had a Nuon-enabled machine and the VLM was nice if not spectacular. I'd expect this to be run faster and smoother. Probably should have tried Tempest 3000 before he ditched it, but no one wanted to pony up for the controller.

SOLD!!!!

And that says a lot, given my enmity towards M$. I always hated myself for not getting a Nuon (and selling my Jag) ... and was REALLY hoping that Sony would contract Minter for something like this.

I was actually thinking about making a thread to discuss the awesomeness of Minter's Visual Light Machine about a month ago, and bring up my hopes that Sony would do this. But alas, I'm going to have suck it up and support M$ on this. Well, maybe they’ll be selling 360 at a loss in the beginning :D

Lionhead was supposed to publish UNITY, then due to "not being able to finish within a timely manner" it was dumped. and now this comes along.

Doest take much to add it all up.

That video was sweet. Loved the music he used too.
I'm not so sure about having the Llamasoft logo appear every now and then, though. Will that be in the 360 version too?

It's since been taken down, so I must rely on a Wayback Machined version of the page, but when Unity was still a go-er this is what the Lionhead website itself had to say on the subject:

http://web.archive.org/web/20030207094932/http://www.lionhead.com/unity/
Lionhead Studios will work closely with Minter on a new game, "Unity" which is being developed for the Nintendo Gamecube, a new development platform for Lionhead Studios. Day to day development of Unity will take place in Minters welsh studio, but he will have access to all Lionhead resources including audio, game testing, production and PR.
I tried searching on Google but was unable to find any mention of Lionhead themselves announcing a publishing deal for Unity on the GameCube.
