Neon - the Minter XBOX visualisation now with Video

Why Minter's X360 visualizations are better than Unity:

1. Runs in 720p
2. Lets you use your own soundtracks...obviously
3. Is accompanied by the hilarious whining of fanboys

(Prepares bong and 100-inch projection screen)

was the video playing behind the bands on the MTV 'special' this visualiser? Had a similar look to a WMP vis.

Someone please put Mr. Minter out of his misery. He is sub-par both as a visionary and a coder and has been living of his "easy for any teen with coding ambitions to master"-visualizer garbage for way too long now.

MS could be a little concerned.

Minter hasn't exactly linked up with stellar hardware folk in the past. ;)

*cough* Atari *cough*

*cough* Nuon *cough*

There is something very wrong in that photo. I mean, look at that expensive plasma TV and all the dirt all over the place, heck, they are even using a tuppin rock to keep the cables on their place WTF? Is that how a cyberhippie lives?

I still love him BTW :)

...that said, he is a nice bloke and all. I love his VIC20 and C64 work (actually I contributed with some lost files for his Llamasoft archives back in the early days of the web) and the various modern Tempest clones have their merit. But it's just too obvious that he has nothing left to give, yet somehow manages to have the big companies sponsor his filthy lifestyle in exchange for dated, butt-ugly visualizer garbage year after year.

"Filthy lifestyle"?

Don't encourage him.

I remember the old Unity stuff looked like it had Colourspace running as a background texture, which made me feel first like the future had finally arrived, and then really old.

Frankly, I'm stunned. I cannot believe it pissed off anybody. I guess I have to knock a few more pegs off my "internet faith" meter. It's at 1 now.

I'm cooled down more than I was at the inital announcement of it. He was the last of the old coder hippes and he took the paycheck.

It's just the end of an era, and it makes me sad.

Why the fuck shouldn't he get paid? He's been working on these things since the 8 bit days, it's about time he got some exposure.

I can't believe Unity got canceled so Minter could waste his talent on a fucking visualizer. It's like comissioning Da Vinchi to draw stick figures.

He can get paid, he made money from all his work, but he needed a plasma in his dirt hut.

We don't really know how Unity played though, do we? It looked like it was just a glorified visualizer in some ways. If there was a good game behind it, I'm sure we'll see it surface in some form or another.

So he got a new TV == OMG TEH SELLOUT? Right. Nice logic there. Would you honestly prefer he continued to support stillborn platforms? Perhaps a new version of Tempest for the Phantom would be more to your liking?

I'd rather he finish what he was working on, rather than can it and take the money.

Unity was his baby, and he aborted it.

It's not the case that Unity was cancelled for this anyway. Try reading the Yak forums sometime.

No, his publisher pulled the project. Not quite the same thing.

He'll never finish it on time.

What has he done since the 8-bit days.

MS wasted all that money on this.

That visualizer doesn't look next gen to me.

He's nothing without Nintendo. Sellout.

...Sorry, thought I was in a Rare thread.

For the second time, IT DIDN'T. Unity got cancelled because there was so much work left to be done that it wouldn't have been released while the Gamecube was still a viable platform (har har har).

But you already vented your frustration in the other thread, so now you're just trolling.

I never really bothered to read much about Jeff Minter, but those pictures made me curious, and I found a Q&A session with him on a website.

So, anyway guys - Jeff Minter likes fucking animals. T or F?

Nope.

Neither does the goodness of Minter on shrooms.

Fixed!

Neon...Nuon...Neon...

Anyways, I think this will be great with the Media Center abilities...because of course I won't have all my CDs ripped onto my 20 GB 360 HDD.

I have a question:

What makes a music visualizer "suck"?

Are there good examples out there of something that's leagues better than what the X360 is providing? I mean, even simple vector-based viz mods like WhiteCap are pretty neat.
