NES battery question

I picked up the original Dragon Warrior used a while back, and finally fired it up last night. I've heard NES cartridge batteries can die, so I played for a few minutes, saved, and then powered the system off for a few seconds and powered it back on. My save file was still there, so I figured the cart was probably fine. I played another hour or so and saved, but today the file is no longer there.

Did I just not power the system off long enough for the save file to disappear before? Or could it have been because I didn't hold Reset in when I powered off the system? If the battery is dead, is it much of a hassle to replace it?

Yeah, it's almost dead. It holds enough of a charge to keep the save alive a tiny while, but not too long. My Super Metroid cart does the same thing. I believe there is a battery replacement tutorial on gamefaqs, check the system section.
