I work with a guy who has written a few scripts for Asylum on the side. He sounds like he has a ton of fun writing them.

NO

That is TROMA, not Asylum. TROMA make fucking awful horror movies, and that's coming from someone who really enjoys shitty horror movies. Thankskilling is without any redeeming quality save for one single line.

Asylum movies are at least fun to watch in their badness, and you can tell the people making them had fun too. TROMA probably have fun making their movies but so far I haven't had any fun watching them.

Holy fucking shit

Asylum is actually really, really close to my house. I've been very tempted on numerous occasions to go over there and ask for a job.

it's quite fun to watch these...particularly how creatively absurd some of the scenes are.

Giant pirrhana leaping out of the water and impaling itself on a tower had me rolling around on the floor!

From the wiki page on their Barely Legal movie:
Cheryl sets out to "make it" with her long-term boyfriend Jake. But after she catches him cheating on her with another girl, she embarks on a string of unsuccessful hook ups, one of which include trying to seduce the local blind kid Frank whose seeing-eye dog has an encounter with her instead.
Lol wut?

I think I need to watch some of these, preferably while stoned.

2 Headed Shark Attack is so good. And by that I mean really bad but it was hilarious. Brooke Hogan and Carmen Electra with all their incredible acting ability.

y'all should be ashamed
A good way to solve this is to not watch terrible $200 million dollar disasters like Jack the Giant Killer, Transformers, Battleship, etc.

I paid actual money to stream Jack the Giant Killer. It was actually great! RedLetterMedia was right about that one.

One of the best Asylum movies that came out recently. The CGI was also pretty decent.

The trailer is here: http://www.theasylum.cc/product.php?id=224

Wow, count me in as being surprised how well CGI can look even at bargain prices.

Asylum to me is no different than the B movies you'd see from the 50s and 60s.

Okay, some of their movies are shameless copies, which you didn't see that, but Hollywood does that on their own, a lot of times 2-3 movies with the same subject will come out in the same year.

This is it's the White House being taken over by terrorists. Coincidence?

They are good to watch while with friends and drinking. More entertainment comes from them than the big budget movies that the Asylum is copying from.

So, basically, they are the Gameloft of movie makers? (for non gaming people, they make blatant copy-paste games out of the most popular games, like how Modern Combat is a rip-off of Call of Duty and Shadow Guardian copies Uncharted).

I mean, they'd probably be able to make some of these copy-paste movies even without Netflix telling them. Pacific Rim has had somewhat huge nerd-buzz for a long time now so they now there's at least some demand for it.

None of these movies are any fun because everyone involved knows they're stupid. Bad writing, acting, effects etc isn't much of a spectacle when that was the goal in the first place.

No, Troma did not do Thankskilling. And Troma movies are mostly great. I love The Toxic Avenger, and Part IV was a good sequel. But Terror Firmer is another classic from them. Not to mention Class of Nukem High, Sgt. Kabukiman, and Poultrygeist.

They used to make instant money off physical rental locations alone. Every blockbuster would carry multiple copies of any movie they put out as a new release, so that was instant sales of thousands of dvd copies for any movie they made. They are done so cheap that it's almost instant profit. You would walk into a blockbuster and they would have 5 copies of whatever shitty asylum new release on the shelf. Course now that most locations are boarded up I doubt they make as much off physical, but the streaming sites are taking care of that quick.

Course title is misleading as it's not just Netflix and article quickly says as much. Also SyFy often pays for half the budget on these films for Asylum for the exclusive rights and cut of the profits.

He should invest in unblock us, UK Netflix and the others have much better movies then the US.

How does that work exactly. Unblock.us is just a DNS change that lets you do things in the UK and the US n' stuff. But how does Netflix know what region you're coming from when it shows you the selection? It's not like a typical VPN where you're choosing a country's server to go through.

You left out the best Asylum movie ever made:
sherlock_large.jpg

Well god damn, Sherlock Holmes, Dinosaurs, Sea Monsters and Dragons. Along with the guy who was Ianto in Torchwood and the guy was Reed the tactical officer on Enterprise, I feel I need to see this film now.

Can't wait for Atlantic Rim.

Its mostly a bore (and normally I love these dumb asylum flicks), but the last 30 minutes are worth it.
The climax involves
a war-crazed general launching nukes, and one of the robots shoving the nuke into the kaiju and flying them both up into space, and being rebounded back to earth by the resulting explosion

Their Sherlock Holmes film not only has the best poster of all time, its also surprisingly really watchable. Recommended.

The funny thing is I'm more offended by the animated movie knock-offs (I've seen them for Brave and Kung Fu Panda among other) than any of these Asylum movies.

I love the way the cover of this reads visually. Like you slowly pan down and see the title of Sherlock Holmes.

Then the actors. "Yep. Pretty standard Sherlock it seems".

Then the text "The world's greatest detective has finally met his match".

"What could be his match?"

You say to yourself as you continue down the box and then BOOM! A fucking T-Rex, fire breathing dragon, and giant octopus are staring at you. Superb.

ghst

thanks for the laugh
"For a typical film, the Asylum floats a concept to its stable of writers. They blast back a slew of 100-word pitches. [Asylum chooses a writer's concept], he bangs out a draft in 10 days, then hands it off to a producer; revisions are made, then the Asylum shoots the film, fast."

that sounds like the greatest job in the world.

how do i get on their rollerdecks?

See, I did this exactly! Genius poster design, really. The first thing I noticed was the Sherlock Holmes and not the FUCKING T. rex. Hahahahahaha. +1 Asylum.

Also the CG in that Age of Dinosaurs trailer was actually not half bad. Would have been groundbreaking 10 years ago.

Wait what the hell, I thought Netflix was supposed to have their entire catalog.

I can't find their Sherlock Holmes film. I actually wanted to watch it.

That sounds like a dream job, zero pressure to write a good movie or be profitable or anything like that. You can just come into work and think of the most ridiculous premise for a movie and shit out a script in a couple days.

Battle of LA is a movie that everyone needs to experience. Truly something special

lmao, that looks exactly like the iPhone novelty app "Action Movie FX".

Love their movies. People who don't enjoy bad movies I find to be way to self serious.

Good way to find out if someone's worth hanging out with is to pop in a shit movie

It's suckered me in before. I searched for 2012 when that movie came out and I ended up with some kinda weirdo Christian flick. It took me like 40 minutes to realize that I wasn't watching the real thing. it was still a funny movie though, it was obviously intentionally bad.

Sharknado is actually a very fun "so bad it's good" movie. I watched it last night actually. Wish I had a gif of the guy chainsawing a shark in two as it hurls toward him about 50 MPH. Anime would get away with it :p

It clearly says on that poster "In Broad Daylight Films presents..."

There's your answer. It was neither.

Hahaha holy shit. I had such a bad experience with it last Thanksgiving, and everyone at the party was saying it was Troma, I didn't even notice on the poster that it wasn't. Hahaha wooooow thanks for correcting me guys.

The Troma movies I've seen have all been terrible (with the exception of Cannibal: The Musical). I've heard Father's Day is excellent though. And apparently they had something to do with the production/release of Slither, which I adore, so maybe they aren't as completely awful as I thought.
